Day 145,

Came across an entry for an outsider’s arrival while doing my extrapolated census.  A woman named Devi.  I’ll admit, I got more than a bit sidetracked looking for entries about her.

Unlike me she was found by a couple of kids playing on the beach.  They wound up taking her to Pat for what I’ve assumed for some time to be the standard welcome tour for outsiders.  She was given a choice of modest lodgings within the Village and settled on a loft in a tower near the docks.  Several weeks later she enlisted with the guards, a choice that seemed to surprise the archivist at the time.  It seems by comparison I really lucked out with the recent vacancy provided by the old archivist.

I find myself wondering what motivated her choice.  My own position I accepted in a daze when it was offered to me and I never really took the time to explore other options.  At the same time, I can’t think of any other role I would rather be fulfilling here.  Was Devi made an offer that she refused?  Something that “suited” her more?  Something that matched with skills and interests from her past life that she turned away from in favor of a truly fresh start?

Or was she some sort of soldier or law enforcement in her old life and just needed time to settle in before going back to the closest approximation to her calling that she could find?

Alas, no way to know beyond idle conjecture.

Wait.  No.  Pat was there.  I could just ask him.
