Chapter 187: Day 186

Day 186,

No mists today.  Probably tomorrow then.

Also, it seems I slept in past noon.  You’d think that with all my time in bed lately I wouldn’t feel so tired.

 

Without my regular archivist duties to attend to and most of the housekeeping handled by Lin and Maiko while I was indisposed I found myself wanting for tasks to occupy myself with.  Restless as I was from forced inactivity and in hopes of jumpstarting building my strength back up, I attempted to start exercising.

Maiko found the concept befuddling.  The fact that from an outside perspective I just spontaneously put down the book I was reading, stood up from the couch without a word and started stretching and doing push-ups only added to the confusion I’m sure.  When she did finally speak up to ask what I was doing (or rather, asked me why I was bobbing up and down like a lizard) it was slow to dawn on me that she outright wasn’t familiar with the concept.

I suppose in a world where you have just about the whole population doing a healthy amount of physical activity as part of their normal day to day, abstracted exercise for the sake of exercise would seem foreign.  Especially for someone who’s spent her own life in the woods away from people who might still do so for whatever reason.

She declined to join me in repeatedly contorting my body on the floor or running circles around the outside of the house (or more like briskly walking after the first half a lap and subsequent out-of-breath break), but she did keep an increasingly bemused eye on me.

I suspect the old me didn’t do this much either as, for all my explaining the concept to Maiko, I honestly had only a vague idea as to the specifics of what to do.  It’s likely that my form was horrible throughout and I will probably regret it in the morning, but it felt strangely energizing.  Paradoxically so even, considering how easily I wore out, cramped, and otherwise had to stop to rest.
