Day 231,

Mists are out today.  Looks like we made it just in time.  Good day for sitting indoors transcribing a long book I suppose.  That thing is thicker than I expected.

Well, this has been a frustratingly unproductive day.  Couldn’t really explore much with the mists out, and Iole’s not willing to break her mist day ritual of “reading” her book all day to let us examine it.  Or to let Lin give her the medical examination she was planning on.  The old woman did let us look over her shoulder while she traced the lines, but that got uncomfortable quickly.  Both physically and socially.

I finally managed to get around to asking Cass what she and Maiko talk about in the boat all day while paddling.  Apparently it’s mostly Cass answering Maiko’s questions about growing up on a farm.  Daily routine, how farming actually works, the feel of working in a field and then coming home to dinner at the end of the day.  That sort of thing.  And apparently a lot of talking about her family.

It occurred to me that I don’t actually know all that much about Cass’s home life or what her siblings are individually like.  I started to ask, but she deferred me to “another time when I haven’t just spent the last couple weeks talking about it”.  Fair enough.

Sun will be going down soon.  Better get inside.  I can’t actually see the hut from where I’m sitting, but the bracelets make that less of a concern than it might be otherwise.

At least the mist giants have been interesting to watch.  There seem to be more of them out here than on the main island.

We’re all crowded in the hut now, getting ready to sleep.  I’ve warned our hostess about my nightmares and apologized in advance if I wake anyone.  Iole recommended the island’s song.  Said it would replace any bad dreams.  That honestly isn’t comforting.

Admittedly, I’m more nervous about frightening people upon waking than the impending nightmare itself.  Hopefully it won’t be a repeat of the last time Cass found me.
