Chapter 239: Day 238

Day 238,

We’ve finally settled into a good rhythm of pacing ourselves with these transcriptions.  It’s a little bit slower than how we’d started off but it should save time in the long run by avoiding errors from exhaustion.

I finally got around to asking Iole about the box she found the book in.  She said she’d put whatever personal belongings and keepsakes she’d had when she washed up in there and buried it near her hut.  When I asked her why she’d do something like that she said that they made her sad, reminding her of the Village and making her question her choice of staying here.

I’m not sure if I find that perfectly reasonable or incredibly creepy.

She added that I was free to dig it up and take a look if I wanted to, just so long as I put it all back when I was done and did it while she wasn’t around to have to look at it.  Maybe Cass and I will do that the next break day we take from transcription.  Or maybe the next time Iole goes to the Overlook if we’re still here by then.

Meanwhile, speaking of the Overlook, we finally thought to ask Iole if there were any ruins or similar interesting sites around here other than the “library” and she told us about some structures in a similar state to the one she’s built her hut up against just a little ways down the coast from the Overlook.  Lin and Maiko went to go check them out.  As I’ve said before, it’s a big island, so they’ll be spending the night out over there tonight.  Since it was her and Maiko going off on their own again, I loaned the ring back to Lin.  Wouldn’t do to have matching one another’s pace be an issue.

Not sure what else to write at the moment.  I think I’ll take another walk over to the spring before turning in for the night.  Maybe invite Cass to join me.  Take some time to talk and see how she’s holding up being away from home for so long.
