Day 243,

Took a little bit longer than I’d hoped, but it’s finally done.  I’d hoped to spend the rest of the day talking to Iole and comparing theories about our interpretations of the book’s contents, but I forgot that today’s her day for visiting the Overlook.  Maybe she’ll be willing to talk when she gets back?

In the meantime, I’ll be helping the others with any final preparations to leave tomorrow.  As tempting as it is to stay and keep studying this island and its ruins, the truth is this expedition has gone on long enough that we’re all getting antsy to get home.  Well, maybe not so much Maiko, but she seems to have picked up on everyone else’s growing unease.

 

Just had a long talk all through the night with Iole.  Can barely keep my eyes open.  Lin turned in hours ago, and Cass and Maiko both wound up falling asleep mid-conversation.  Not going to recount it all here, but I took notes in my other notebook as we talked, so I’ll be able to revisit them when we get back.

It’s funny, it’d normally be an understatement to call the old woman laconic (half the time I wonder if she even notices we’re here) and she was actually fairly reluctant to talk about meaning and theories regarding the book she’s been obsessing over for decades, but once she finally got going… well, let’s say some spark of the Iole that Tristan described to me is still very much alive.

Okay, the night sky’s definitely a shade lighter than it ought to be.  I need to at least try to get some sleep before the sun’s up all the way.

Tomorrow’s not going to be fun.
