The next few months of my life flew by as I found myself accomplishing the tasks of infanthood at a relatively fast speed. I was able to walk when I was about 8 months old.

This was when I finally got a bit of freedom, my mother no longer was obsessing over wherever I was walking to as my parents had smartly child-proofed most of the house.

However, this did not prevent me from my one true goal. I still needed to find out where I was.

It was at this point where I was lucky enough to get to leave the property, I had been trapped in for the last 11 months and 23 days.

That was when my mother took me with her to do some shopping for the first time. Unfortunately, instead of her allowing me to walk she used one of the strollers that was similar to the ones from my last life.

My mother had taken me to a local supermarket, but it still wasn’t clear if I had just been reborn on the same Earth I had been on originally or I was someplace else.

My mother and I reached the frozen aisle for food.  She had just finished putting a box of a dozen eggs into the cart which she was carrying on her right arm when it happened.

A loud siren began blasting through the market as red lights started to flash from lights on the ceiling.

My mother’s face turned pale as she began to panic. Her concern immediately went to me as she picked me up from the stroller and began running towards some place.

As we drew closer to my mother’s goal, I could see a stampede of other shoppers rushing to the same place as my mother, it appeared to be a bunker of some sorts.

I didn’t like what this situation implied,

‘If there’s a need for a bunker, how regularly does this occur?’

As my mom and I drew closer to the bunker I heard something off in the distance.

The sound, drawing my attention, led me to look at something that would ruin anybody’s appetite.

I saw what appeared to be an enlarged wombat, but, unlike a wombat, it was covered with a turtle-like shell with spikes on the center of the patterns.

My mother turned towards the beast as well, seemingly recognizing what it was.

My mother, now in a panic, began to run away from the mass of people trying to cram their way into the bunker.

However, I still had my gaze locked onto the giant wombat, watching its every move.

As the wombat looked in the direction of the bunker its eyes lit up, seemingly in glee. That was when the wombat turned itself into a massive, spiky ball and began rolling.

The wombat’s speed was immense, crossing across the near football stadium sized supermarket in no less than 4 seconds.

With this immense speed it crashed into the mass of people breaking through the entry of the bunker, now able to get into the bunker as well as. The collision had caught nearly a dozen people who had yet to get inside, causing an explosion of blood to burst across the nearby walls and floor.

My mother and a few others were running away from the bunker as the wombat continued its journey into the bunker.

As I heard its descent it seemed to run into something impassable, this irritating the wombat, made it shriek its rage.

My mother ran, further and further from the wombat, nearly reaching the exit when something descended from above us.

It’s appearance was both ugly and fear inducing as it seemed to release a menacing, black aura which was almost visible to the eye.

The beast seemed to be some kind of mix between a pterodactyl and sabretooth, meaning it was a quadrupedal, flying monstrosity.

However, my mother did not seem as scared of this beast as she was the wombat for some reason.

Suddenly, my mother’s speed increased drastically, to the point of nearly giving me whiplash, as she dashed to a nearby clothing store.

Instead of trying to escape this beast, my mother set me down within one of the clothing displays, surrounding me in a circle of shirts and pants.

“Caden, it’s going to be alright. Mommy just has to take care of one small thing.”

I was dumbfounded. How was my mother going to be alright when there was a fucking sabretooth pterodactyl?

I used my two hands to open a slight hole in the display to see what was going on outside of the store when I saw my mother enter a fighting stance as the sabretooth sped towards her.

What happened next would’ve been something that felt like a scene of an action movie.

My mother seemingly pulled a spear from nowhere, its tip held a blue glow to it as she engaged the beast.

Her spear ripped through the air, dancing towards the beast leaving afterimages with its immense speed.

The sabertooth leaped to the right dodging the fastest strike, but also being nicked on the back right thigh by its follow up.

The sabertooth had now reached within less than a meter of my mother when she leapt into the air turning her body, so it faced towards the ground, as she neared the roof of the store she prepared to leap off of that surface as well.

Her auburn hair drifted in front of her face, making her look like some kind of demon as the glimpses of her blue eyes I saw shined with determination.

She propelled herself off of the roof with insane levels of speed which the beast was unable to dodge.

It seemed as though my mother herself had turned into the spear as the speed seemingly distorted her body.

The spear my mother held pierced through the beast like a bullet, causing the beast to die immediately.

My mother seemed exhausted from the short encounter, but still seemed excited despite it.

She rushed over to me as I was dealing with the emotions flowing through me. I felt scared, happy, worried, and excited from watching the battle.

But, if there was one thing I could understand from this ungodly situation, it was one thing… this is not the Earth I was from, this is the world from “Defending from the Darkest Night.”
