I sat cradled in three branches at the top of an old oak behind my house. I could see over the rooftop, could see for miles. All the sources of my problems, laid out in front of me. As I sat there, I let my mind wander. Brooding, people call it.

“Why must you always spend so much time brooding” my Aunt Spence used to say.

That was back before the move, The thing that ruined my life.

My parents were looking for new opportunities. A way to get ahead. Anything really, as long as it was different. When my Dad got a job offer to work as research and development for a small company in a rural town, He jumped at the offer. I still remember the excitement in his Voice.

“This is it!” He exclaimed “This is our chance! It’s the thing we have all been waiting for. A chance to get out of the city, to make something with our lives. We’d be fools not to take it.”

So we did. We packed up our life, said goodbye to our friends, rented a Uhaul, and drove out to the middle of nowhere. As we unpacked our boxes into our new home, I remember thinking about dad's words, and being excited for our new life.

That was two years ago. Since then, I have floated around. I was always a shy kid, and this resulted in me not making any friends. Now nearing the end of eighth grade, I was a loner, with no friends, and no social life.

As I contemplated my life, my Mom stuck her head out of the window. “BRAY” she yelled “DINNER.”

Climbing down from the oak tree, I made my way inside, and helped my Mom set the table. Did I have to? No. But it’s not like I had anything better to do, and my Mom could use the help. My dad made enough to keep us afloat, so my mom was a stay at home Mom. There were four people in our family, Mom, Dad, Me, and Finn. Finn is my little brother. He never listens to anyone, and does anything and everything in his power to get in trouble. Not a day has gone by where we haven’t gotten a call from the school saying that Finn got in trouble again. He is always picking fights, messing around in class, and just generally being a disrespectful thorn in the side of everyone he meets.

As I put the last of the food on the table, I call everyone for dinner, and we sit down to eat. Mom hadn’t had a chance to go to the store yet, so it was just leftover taco meat from last night, but like anything Mom cooks, it tasted good.

We all made small talk over dinner, and then I headed up to my room. My Dad was probably going to put on the news, and Mom would most likely watch it with him. Finn usually goes up to his room to watch youtube, and I go back to brooding every night.

When I entered my room, I was, once again, reminded of the move. Despite it being over two years since we moved into this house, I still hadn’t unpacked everything. I had my bed set up in a corner, with my desk sitting at the foot of it. On my desk, there was an older laptop, and a few pencils. Other than that, I had a dresser in another corner, and clothes in the closet. The rest of my stuff was still packed away in boxes that had been shoved in a corner. I was never going to use any of that stuff, why bother to unpack.

Realizing that I was drained from yet another boring, monotonous day, I lay down in bed, and went to sleep. It was early, not even eight o’clock, but same as before, I had nothing better to do.
