Someone Let It in on Purpose (1)

The incoming attack was so sudden that Ding Yi could only helplessly gape with her eyes! But before she could react, the ghostly hand suddenly stopped inches before her chest.

The female ghost froze, rigidly turning her neck: “You…”

Behind her was an impassive Mu Yueshi; his face was shrouded in shadow, and a faint, dark rune appeared between his brows.

He coldly pulled out his tiny hand, which was covered in demonic energy, from the ghost’s “back” while spitting out two condescending words: “A puppet.”

Soon after, the “ghost” let out a piercing wail, her pale face turned rigid, and then her entire body shrunk into a section of wood with a human face carved on it. It fell onto the ground and cracked open.

Mu Yueshi tossed aside the piece of bark in his hand, and when he lifted his face, his dark expression instantly turned bright and innocent. He ran, tap, tap, tap, over to Ding Yi and hugged her: “Look Ding Yi! It’s only a wooden puppet.”

Ding Yi, still reeling from the shock, subconsciously patted her heart. I almost got sucker punched by that thing!

It was a good thing she was prepared. If she hadn’t helped the boss sneak around by talking to it, she would’ve been a goner!!

“I see.” Ding Yi weakly nodded. Then she asked in worry: “How are you? Did you get hurt?  Can you let me check?”

“Nah.” Said Mu Yueshi, shaking his head. He obediently walked over for Ding Yi to see.

Ding Yi examined the boy from head to toe. The rapid palpitations of her heart only eased when she was sure he was healthy. Afterwards, she looked around and saw that there were no more cold winds nor shadows near the door. Everything was back to normal.

It was likely that the haunted house wasn’t just haunted by a ghost.

Ding Yi walked over to the piece of rotting wood and crouched down, her brows knitting into a knot. She searched her memories but could not find any recollection of a wooden puppet appearing in the story.

She reluctantly turned around and asked Mu Yueshi: “You mentioned that it was a puppet, have you seen such a thing before?”

Mu Yueshi lowered his eyes onto the piece of wood on the ground and nodded. He picked up a fragment and said: “It’s just an ordinary puppet. Look, there’s a spell carved onto the bark, someone must have let it in intentionally.”

Ding Yi took the piece of wood and examined it, confirming with her own eyes the strange spell carved onto the bark. There was something sticky oozing out from the wood, causing her to feel queasy: “What’s this?”

“Cremated remains,” answered Mu Yueshi stoically. He then added: “The rest of it is in this house, so that’s why the puppet wanted to come inside.”

Ding Yi’s expression froze, goosebumps sprouting over her arms.

Is this supposed to be a funeral home?!!

Ding Yi cried to the system: Is it too late to give up the mission?

System: Request denied. The current plot progression is normal, please focus on completing the mission.

Ding Yi quietly looked at her paltry experience and health points and was overwhelmed with sorrow. What else could she do about it? The only option is to face it head on!

Although her face was filled with pain, she nonetheless wrapped the pile of wood up and shakily copied down the spell on the bark.

However, after she finished drawing the entire spell, Ding Yi’s brows knit together even tighter… This seems a bit familiar.

It was then that Mu Yueshi suddenly popped out from behind her and said crisply: “Ding Yi, the spell you drew is pretty similar to the ones on the talisman.”

Ah, of course!

“Yeah! That’s it!” said Ding Yi happily. It was very similar to the talismans stuck on the door!

She hurriedly ran back inside, and lo and behold, the spell on the bark had a 90% similarity to the talismans that she ripped from the straw hut!

But it wasn’t an exact match. The spell on the bark was a little more complicated and looked sharper and more sinister.

What did that mean?

It meant that the person who suppressed the bone withering bamboo* and the person who controlled the puppet was from the same school!

It was also very probable that the mastermind behind the “haunted house” had a direct connection to the master cultivator that the bone withering bamboo was cursing before her death!

*(previously translated as withered bone skull)

Ding Yi felt deeply moved by her own brilliant and flawless reasoning! I’m such a genius, to have found such a profound clue!!

The system promptly reminded her: The mission difficulty has increased. A new skill is available for this mission, will you activate the new skill?

Ding Yi was cautious, saying loudly: It’s not that true sight or whatever again is it?  That trial card that you gave me was really no good! It couldn’t even distinguish between a puppet and a real ghost! No I don’t want it! Terrible!

System: There are choices you can choose from.

To suddenly have a choice was something that surprised Ding Yi, but she still had her reservations. The system, however, was honest and sent her a selection window.

[Skill 1: True sight, you can see ghosts; Skill 2: Enhanced endurance, no offensive power; Skill 3: Enhanced dexterity, no offensive power]

One look was enough to send the corners of Ding Yi’s mouth twitching.

Ding Yi fiercely protested: Boss, you’re really terrible! Do the last two even count as skills? Did you just tack on two useless skills so I would be forced to choose the first one?

That’s way too mean! It was obvious that it was a trap.

The system really murdered her excitement there.
