In the courtyard of a large mansion, a young adolescent boy could be seen drenched in sweat that sparkled in the fading light of the setting sun. From afar, a group of servants looked upon the boy with expressions of pity and sadness…
As he worked tirelessly and continued to launch beautiful spells toward unmoving straw targets, they could only shake their heads in disappointment and whisper amongst themselves…
“Is he still going at it?... I thought the young lord would have faced reality by now… It’s been five years hasn’t it?” One of the maids spoke first with a sad tone.
“His stubbornness is admirable… But I do fear what Master Arthur might think. Asher hasn’t attended any of his imperial studies and wastes his time training from dawn to dusk… No matter how much the boy wishes, his… condition is not something that can be resolved with effort alone. He will always be half-a-mage, but there is still hope for him to become a true and proper lord…” A butler commented with mixed feelings.
“Do you think his efforts might have something to do with young master Kevin? Perhaps he fears that his father will supplant him as heir?” The maid inquired with a fearful yet curious tone.
“Don’t speak of such things, Maria… Regardless of Asher’s capabilities as a mage, he is still a noble, and the Lord’s firstborn son. Regardless of his disadvantages, Asher still has a pure bloodline and strong mana that is unprecedented even for the Vazrael family. As for his efforts… I think his motivations are far more deeply rooted than a petty sibling rivalry…” The butler trailed off upon realizing the danger in his words and returned to his duties.
His words left Maria with much to think about… It had only been two years since she had begun serving the Vazrael family at this mansion, yet she had already begun to understand the relationship dynamics and personalities of the lord’s family…
The only one she couldn’t quite grasp was their eldest son whom she was still gazing at through the clear glass window… Asher Vazrael…
Maria herself had come from a Barony and had heard the various rumors about the handsome white-haired youth… A fallen prodigy born with everything, yet his potential was robbed from him due to a curse disguised as a blessing during his revelation ceremony…
While the Vazrael family was known for producing generations of Mages who specialized in Light Magic, Asher was born with a unique disposition that granted him affinity towards both Light and Darkness… While Dual-Aspects of magic were typically seen only a handful of times every century, Asher’s rare combination of magic was quite possibly the worst blessing he could have ever been granted…
Any Mage born with Dual-Aspects must always face a glaring challenge… The synergy between their magic aspects… While possessing both Fire and Wind Magic could form a deadly combination, dual aspects of Fire and Water Magic would only work against one another…
In Asher’s case, poor compatibility of magic aspects was brought to its extremes. Light and Dark magic weren’t just incompatible, they were completely opposing forces that countered and canceled one another. This meant that no matter how hard Asher tried, he would only be able to use half of his magic at any given time…
No matter how versatile he was, this crippling lack of half his power was not something that a Mage could simply surpass… Asher would forever remain “half-a-mage” as the butler had mentioned…
Even a novice like Maria who could only use simple Water Magic spells understood this… That’s exactly why she couldn’t understand the boy nor what madness compelled him to such extremes. While magic was valued, Asher was a trueborn noble… All he needed was his mana and bloodline to live a comfortable life.
With his talent and work ethic, he would likely become a noble lord whose brilliance surpassed even his father…
Maria wanted to know why… She wanted to understand the reasoning of the sweat-drenched boy she was watching from afar. How did the mind of a fallen genius operate? Was there something he could see that she couldn’t? How long did he plan to continue such futile efforts?
The endless questions plagued her mind. But of course, Maria knew better than to let her curiosity get the better of her… She had a job to do. Everyone had their own role in the world, and Maria understood hers.

As he walked away in contemplation, she could only hope and earnestly wish that the determined young boy finds his own role sooner rather than later… After all, learning to give up on your dreams is part of what it means to mature…
As the onlookers returned to their duties, Asher was once again left alone in the courtyard. The only sound that could be heard was the youth’s heavy breathing and the rhythmic words he continued to chant at regular intervals…
“[Spear of Dawn]... [Radiant Blade]... [Light Arrow]... [Illuminating Slash]...”
With every brief incantation that Asher spoke aloud, brilliant and beautiful spells conjured from particles of light appeared from his left hand and struck the staw target. If most mages were to see this scene, they would stand in awe at Asher’s ability to cast advanced magic spells without a single chant.
In truth, Asher only recited the names of his spells verbally to keep track of what spells he was using. Being able to cast magic without even reciting the name of a spell was just one of the many talents that caused Asher to be once labeled as a prodigy…
Yet as Asher witnessed the results of his efforts, he was only dissatisfied…
“Shit… This is not enough!” He screamed out in anger as he slammed his fist into the ground, creating a small indentation in the bricks from the impact.
After pelting the training targets with his Light Magic all day, he still had yet to manage to break through their protective enchantments and destroy them… His magic was stronger than ever, but it still wasn’t enough…
Asher knew his brother Kevin’s Light Magic could easily destroy those target dummies within a few hours. While Asher never liked to compare himself to others, he knew better than anyone that his abilities were inadequate… He needed to become stronger.
The fact that he could only train his Light Magic using his left hand was proof of that. The second he tried to channel mana to use the Dark Magic in his right hand, both magics would negate each other and cancel out…
Asher was cursed to never be able to use the full potential of either of his magical aspects… At least, that is what everyone believed.
Asher was not so easily swayed… Ever since that day, mastering magic had been all that he ever wanted. While others saw Asher’s incompatible dual-aspects as a curse, he saw them as a blessing with hidden potential.
A unique power that belonged to him, and him alone… If he couldn’t effectively master the power granted to him by fate, the blame only lies in his lack of effort or imagination. This is what Asher had always believed…
So until his efforts betrayed him, Asher refused to betray his efforts… Working past sunset, Asher continued training until his body collapsed from mana exhaustion.
When he awoke, he found himself in the comfort of his room once more… With unexplainable energy, Asher leaped from his bed and was ready to start a new of training… The road ahead remained unclear, but Asher was determined to see it through to the end.
First time trying this sort of thing... Appreciative of any constructive criticism.
