As a young adolescent named Asher Vazrael tossed and turned in his sleep, he dreamt of a simpler time when life was much easier… A time when he spent every waking hour studying spellbooks and researching mana theory that was far beyond the capabilities of any normal 10-year-old child.
Yet the peace and tranquility of his dreams ceased as he began to live that fateful day… The day of Asher’s revelation ceremony…
While not all noble bloodlines were born with magical potential, those that were had a responsibility to bring their child to the Temple and have their magical aspect affinity assessed through a divine revelation…
While children were born with innate mana, the magical aspects required to channel that mana into actual magic are only awakened after a child’s body grows and develops to a certain point. Most scholars believe this to be due to the way that “Mana Circuits” in the body mature over time.
While the exact times may vary, most children awaken their magical aspects by their 10th birthday. As such, it is traditional for noble or privileged children to undergo a revelation ceremony at this time and receive the enlightenment required to master their magic…
To Asher, this revelation ceremony was an event he had been looking forward to for years. Asher had trained his mana control, increased his magical power, and heightened his mana sensitivity to the highest level one could achieve for his age.
Even without a magical aspect, he was already a peerless prodigy who could use Mana Techniques to reinforce his body and physical abilities…
Of course, both Asher and his family knew that these talents would only truly blossom once he attained his own magical aspect…
As Asher entered the Temple on that fateful day, murmurs amongst the growing audience as speculation about the nature of his magic ensued…
“To think the Vazrael family will be blessed with another capable Light Mage… I truly envy their genes.” A wealthy merchant whispered.
“No, no… Don’t be so hasty Mr. Hammet. There’s also a good chance he might inherit his mother’s Dark Magic. The Moonlight Witch’s blood is likely as strong as her power was…” Another woman commented.
“Oh, please. A rare prodigy like him won’t just awaken a rare magic aspect; I’ll bet he has a powerful Deviant Magic Aspect like one of the Sovereigns!” Another well-dressed man interjected.
As the crowd argued, Asher and his family paid no mind to it and awaited the actions of the bishop…
The ceremony itself was relatively simple. All Asher had to do was channel his mana into the magic circle inscribed on an altar and await the color of the resulting glow…
Following the bishop’s instructions, Asher did exactly that… After a few brief moments, an orb of mixed colors appeared… Like Yin-and-Yang, two conflicting colors of White and Black swirled around one another, ceaselessly attempting to devour the other.
This cycle continued until the orb faded away and the light emanating from the altar vanished…
“Asher Vazrael… The Mana has blessed you… Henceforth, let it be known to the world through this revelation. In the wisdom of the all-father, I pronounce Asher’s Magic to be dual aspects of Light and Darkness… Fate has declared: May your journey be overwhelmed with both tragedy and fortune…”
With the haunting words echoing in his mind, Asher jolted awake and wiped away the cold sweat that had formed…
“I wonder how many times I’ll have to endure that nightmare…” Asher muttered to himself.
“Is something wrong, young master?” A voice interrupted.
“Whoa?!... Oh… It’s just you Walter…” Asher flinched in surprise at the unexpected interruption of his butler.
“You had instructed me to wake you up before dawn so you resume your early morning training. Would you like me to postpone your schedule for the day?” The tall butler offered graciously.
“No, it’s fine. I’m not tired, just a bit rattled after recalling some old memories.” Asher replied while rising from bed.
“Ah… I see…” Walter’s eyes glowed for a moment as his voice lowered upon understanding.
“In any case… Has there been any word from my father?” Asher changed the topic quickly with an inquiry.
“I delivered your message, but the Count has yet to grace me with a reply. Though I must imagine he isn’t too pleased with your request… ” Alfred warned with a distressed expression.
Asher could only sigh and reassure his loyal servant…
“I see… Well, it’s not like I expected anything less. Still, I guess silence is better than outright refusal. If it came to it, I considered just running away…” Asher replied in a half-joking tone.

“Young Master!” Walter cried out anxiously at his charge’s reckless comment.
“Relax… Even I’m not reckless enough to do that without a plan…” Asher sighed.
Still, his reassurances weren’t enough to alleviate the concerns of the worried butler. Walter was closer to Asher than anyone, and likely knew more about his thoughts than even his own family. He had served Asher’s mother since before his birth and loyally protected him ever since her death.
If anyone knew what Asher was thinking about and what motivated him, it was Walter…
“Have you begun to lose faith in your father?” Walter inquired.
Clearly shocked by the unexpectedly accurate accusation, Asher faltered for a moment before answering truthfully.
“I don’t know… Ever since mother died, it’s felt like he’s been constantly trying to dissuade me from learning magic. His attitude has only worsened since my revelation and his blatant favoritism towards Kevin makes me wonder if he truly considers me his son anymore…”
“Asher… Lord Vazrael is-” As Walter began to defend Asher’s father, Asher interrupted.
“I know… I know how much mother’s death affected him. I know how much responsibility he has as a Count responsible for the lives of thousands. I know how much care he holds towards me as his son. I know it all. Yet knowing that doesn’t make it any easier to accept… Even if he’s my father, I refuse to allow him to meddle with my fate and prevent me from carrying out mother’s legacy…” Asher spoke out with a shaky voice.
An awkward silence ensued between the master and servant before Asher cleared his throat and changed the subject.
“Ahem… Enough about that. Without wasting any more time, we should resume my training regiment.”
Seeing his master’s intent, Walter agreed with a simple nod and the two left the large bedroom behind. As the two approached the courtyard, a clashing sound could be heard as the swords of two familiar figures collided.
One of them was a blonde-haired boy with shining blue eyes like Asher’s that resembled diamonds. The boy wielded a sword cloaked in bright shining light that seemed to generate a whizzing sound as it cut through the air. While young, his handsome figure resembled that of a Hero from a fairy tale. He was Asher’s younger brother, Kevin Vazrael…
As Asher and Walter approached, the larger of the two sparring figures looked toward them with a smile.
“It’s good to see you working hard again this early, Asher.” The large grizzled man spoke with a deep voice.
“You flatter me, Sir Royce. We merely came to spectate my dear brother’s training.” Asher lied naturally to the knight standing before him.
As if reading through his thoughts, Royce simply smirked. Of course, Asher already knew that the proud Knight was not someone who could be easily fooled… Sir Royce Geralt had served the Vazrael family for decades and was one of their strongest and most reliable Knights. A victor of a hundred battles...
And for the time being, he was also the instructor of Asher’s younger brother, Kevin…
“That’s a shame. I was hoping to request your assistance in a friendly sparring match to help with Kevin’s training. I believe fighting against someone closer to his age group will be an enlightening experience.” Royce requested with a demeanor that seemed to refuse any refusal…
“Sir Royce… I don’t believe that-” As Walter began to speak, Asher interrupted him once more.
“It’s fine Walter… My training has been far too lax lately anyways.” the young white-haired boy proudly replied while conjuring his own sword of light without speaking a word.
“Your chant annulment is still as impressive as ever, Ash… Though don’t you think you’re acting a bit cocky?” Kevin answered my challenge with a provoking smirk.
The relationship between the two Vazrael siblings was far from any normal brotherly love… The two were both rivals and enemies. Since they had lived both their lives being compared to each other in one way or another, there was always a hint of hostility in each of their actions.
Yet occasionally, their passive aggressiveness wouldn’t be enough to vent their frustrations, and altercations like this would occur…
“I suppose I’ll be the judge of this duel…” Walter offered.
“That’s fine with me,” Kevin replied and Sir Royce nodded in agreement as well.
With the courtyard cleared, the two siblings stood in opposition and prepared themselves. A conflict between the fallen prodigy and the future hero was about to begin…
