Chapter 8: Unlucky

I headed south in order to look for the bees' base, and it didn't take long for me to find another group of five bees that was once again quickly disposed of by the fired swords.

However, someone troublesome was still following Kai and healing his arm from a distance.

"You stole the experience…" Kai said.

"How is your arm? Is it getting better?" The woman asked. "If it is getting better this fast, then this will be a huge discovery for medicine… for all fields of science!"

"Woman, the city is going to hell, and you are thinking about scientific discoveries?" Kai asked. "I am not the one to talk to, but you must have a short fuse… I am heading to the nest of the beast, and I am not going to protect you in case something happens. You have been warned."

"Sure, no problem," the woman said. "By the way, my name is Angelica."

"I am Steven Seagal," Kai said.

"Like the famous actor? Your parents must be quite the fans, huh," Angelica said.

"Great, someone that can't understand sarcasm," Kai said.

Kai didn't like the presence of someone else nearby, and he couldn't get as pumped as before. Still, the fact that the enemies were falling with a single attack must also be the cause of it.

Regardless, Kai reached the park that he had seen earlier and where the kids came from. He could see some mummified corpses across the field, but he didn't see any metal bats. He decided not to look for one since he had to check the knife in action.

In the end, it didn't take long for Kai to find the enemy base. On the place where a large pile of rubble could be seen below and once had been a residential complex, Kai found a massive boulder where half of it had turned red. He assumed that it was one of the meteors… but he also wondered why it didn't sink to the ground after destroying the building.

After not so long, Kai saw some big bees flying toward it and then piercing their stings on it. After not so long, they returned to the smaller size and then flew in other directions in search of more prey.

"My guess was right… they are feeding something, but not a queen bee," Kai said. "There must be something inside the meteor that needs blood to be freed or perhaps to revive."

Kai was expecting to see how the monsters were appearing, but he found something else. Still, he should get his answer eventually, as long as he keeps hunting the monsters.

"The wound is almost closed. How do you feel?" Angelica asked.

"... Not so bad," Kai replied after closing his left hand and only feeling a small amount of pain. "It seems that your magic can really close most wounds with enough time. Now you know that you can run around the city and look for people that need to be rescued. I wish you good luck."

"I think that I can be of more use if I help you," Angelica said. "It seems that you want to strike the core of the problem, so that might save a lot more people."

"No way, I am just going to use them to grind levels," Kai said. "This isn't a videogame, but this is practically a spawning point for monsters, so there is no better place to get experience."

"Just by killing the red bees, you still will save a lot of lives," Angelica said. "Even if you are doing that for your own benefit, you will end up helping a lot of people. I can't let someone like you die. You also have a weird power to make others gain power."

Kai sighed. It would be better to explain things in more detail to avoid stupid misunderstandings. After explaining about the runes, Kai realized that he should walk around the area to look for more giant bees and for survivors that would need Angelica's help. That way, she will get busy and get off his back.

"I am a medicine student, so you can't imagine how happy I am for being able to magically heal people," Angelica said when they began to walk in search of enemies. "You don't seem older than me. What do you do? Steven?"

"The name is Kai… seriously. You are quite the unlucky girl. Of all people that you could have found, you had to find me," Kai said and then sighed. "I am in a quest for power and to confirm if karma is a thing. I could have helped some people in the past hour, but I ignored them. You are the only exception because I wanted someone to give the Healer class. I am not crazy enough not to understand that there is something wrong with my head or if this is just an excuse for me to vent all my frustrations. Either way, you won't see pretty things if you stick around."

"You don't talk like someone insane, though…" Angelica said hesitantly.

"Then, I am just venting my frustration on everything and everyone," Kai said and then shrugged. "I am not going to give a speech about my dark vision of the world, so don't bother asking what happened."

While Angelica was wondering what to do, Kai found a group of red bees approaching the meteor from the west side, and two of them were bigger than the others. He couldn't let that chance escape, so he told her to stay away while he dashed toward the creatures.

Kai didn't have a hard time sniping the smaller ones. Thanks to that, he had the chance to attack the big ones before they could do it first… but he didn't it… Kai just readied his knife and waited for them to approach, and he did it while smirking…
