Chapter 9: Promotion

The two beasts tried to impale Kai's head at the same time, but he lowered his stance before moving to the side and ended up passing by both creatures without being even scratched.

The monsters turned around and then charge at the same time and came from the same direction. However, Kai jumped to the side at the last moment and saw the beasts passing by him. He could have attacked them at least once, but Kai decided to do one thing at a time.

"My speed is higher, so as long as I am aware of where I am going to and don't hesitate, they won't hit me," Kai thought. "Now, let's see what I can do when counter-attacking…'

The bees began to fly while zigzagging and approaching, so it seemed that they could tell what Kai was planning. Still, that changed nothing. When they aimed for the sides of Kai's head, he stepped forward and then swung his knife to the side. The bees hit the air, and his knife pierced one of their wings.

Of the monsters had a hard time keeping flying, and the other ignored the fact that it had lost its only advantage. When the creature charged again, Kai just waited until the last moment before he blocked the sting with his knife… he tried to hold back the beast, but its Brute Strength still was higher.

Kai moved to the side and let his knife slide until it pierced the chest of the red bee. While he was finishing off that one, the other attacked him from behind. Kai turned around and used Sword Materialization, but before he could fire it, Angelica smashed the creature's head with a broom. It didn't cause much damage, but it stopped the beast until Kai finished it off.

"I see… so it is retroactive… this is good," Kai smirked. "This is, in fact, delicious."

Kai smirked and turned into an expression of ecstasy. He felt like complaining to Angelica for stealing his experience, but that didn't matter anymore. It was small stuff… in any case, I wanted to check how exactly increasing my perception would change or help me, so I used some points on it and then added the remaining free ones on speed. There was no need to be durable if I could be fast enough to dodge most attacks…

"Kai… some people are coming," Angelica said.

It didn't seem like perception improved Kai's senses that much since Angelica was the one who had to inform him of that. Coming north, Kai could see the group of survivors that he had seen earlier. One of them gained a bow, and one could see that they had gained a lot of fighting experience in the last hour. It didn't seem like they had watched him fighting, so they heard some noises.

"We mean no arm… can we approach?" A tall, black-haired man carrying the bow and wearing a basketball uniform asked. "We are just a group of people that are looking for more survivors… I remember seeing you earlier."

"What do you want?" Kai asked. "As you can see, this isn't time for chitchat."

"Right… people are dying left and right, so we are bringing the survivors to an underground parking lot," the man with the bow asked. "We don't have enough hands to defend the place and to look for other people, and it does seem like you two can fight more than a bit well. So, we would like your assistance."

"I am not interested, but this is your chance to heal people," Kai said. "You should go with them."

"Oh, you can heal wounds? We really needed someone like you," the archer said. "My name is Alex, and what is yours?"

"... Angelica, if you have wounded people with you, I can offer some assistance, but…" Angelica hesitated. "I still want to help Kai, and I owe him more than a little bit."

"The debt was paid, don't overthink things," Kai said and then sighed.

"Are you sure you don't want to join us?" Alex asked. "There are strengths in numbers. Besides, I talked with a friend a while ago, and it does seem like some weird individuals are coming from a hole in the southern part of the city, and they are targeting people that can fight."

"I will keep that in mind," Kai said, and then he headed in the opposite direction.

Kai was interested in what he heard, but first, it would be better to focus on what he had started: to eliminate that base of the bees. Besides, strength is for numbers the same way an empty wallet is for bills, and both of them causes endless amounts of headache.

"Gathering Intel will be easier with others, but that will bring more problems than solutions," Kai thought while he was looking for the other red bees. "I will do whatever I want, and now that this city is being overrun by monsters, I have even fewer reasons to help others. I will focus on getting stronger and nothing more."

There was the thing about the class runes that he had to give to others, but that wasn't a significant concern. Sooner or later, he might be able to find truly useful people to grant him even more experience…
