It has been ten years since River had discovered that she had no powers. She was barely managing to make it from day to day. Everyone in the village laughed when they saw her because she was powerless. When they saw her walking around the village whispers were all around. Ever since she learned that she had no powers she was watched by a mischievous pixie named Jomen. He hated watching her but did it because he owed Lilith a favor for something years ago.

River was walking through town to go visit her friend Lucielle Autumn. Lucielle was the apprentice of the potions maker in town. Jomen was not far behind River as she made her way to the potion house. When she got there she knocked on the door and looked around waiting for her friend to answer the door. “Why do you always visit such boring friends?” Jomen said as he rolled his eyes tapping his foot.

“Be quiet Jomen. It’s not like you have anything better to do.” River said as she looked at him and rolled her eyes.

“Don’t tell me what to do, River. I’ll tell Lilith.” He said, shooting a look at River. Over the years River and Jomen had pretty much become siblings. There were times when they were playful and others when they were having fights over the stupidest things.

“And? What is she going to do about it?” River said, daring to challenge Jomen. The door opened and Lucielle looked at the two. “Are you two fighting again over nothing?” She said putting a hand on her hip. “No,” Jomen said as he looked away. Lucielle laughed. “Come in you two.” She said opening the door more gesturing for them to come in. They all walked down the hallway to Lucielle’s room.

“Same thing still happening?” Lucielle asked as she looked at River.

“Yup. There is even a new rumor going around.” River said as she looked to the side and saw the potion book that Lucielle had open.

“What is it about this time? You flirting with Jomen?” Lucielle asked, laughing quietly.

“No. They say that I have powers but I’m just hiding them. Or that I’m in a secret affair with a human.” River said, looking to the side. “Seriously!?” Lucielle said laughing.

“Yeah. They even claim to have seen me leaving the village to go see this human.” River said as she laughed quietly. She loved being able to do this. Joking around with her best friend. The one who seemed to understand her better than anyone else.

“What else has been happening? Anything between you and Ernu?” Lucielle said as she leaned closer to River.

“No! We’re just friends.” River said as she looked to the side a small blush appeared on her cheeks.

“Something happened! Spill.” Lucielle said as she looked at River. River looked to the side with a small smile on her face. “Nothing. He just asked me if I wanted to go to the Moon festival with him.” River said.

“The Moon Festival! That’s so big River! If you get asked to go to the Moon Festival by a dark elf it means that he likes you!” Lucielle said excitedly.

“It’s no big deal really..” River said, looking to the side.

“Come on River, You’ve liked this guy for years. Tell me that you said yes when he asked you.” Lucielle said.

“Of course, she said yes,” Jomen said, rolling his eyes.

“I wasn’t talking to you,” Lucielle said glaring at Jomen.

“You asked,” Jomen said, looking to the side. River would sigh as she looked out the window. Of course, she knew that Ernu liked her and she liked him. They both knew that it wouldn’t be possible for them to be together though. Ernu was a dark elf and she was an ordinary human. She couldn’t do anything that would help him.

As River was deep in thought Lucielle was trying to get River’s attention. Lucielle sighed as she started shaking Rivers' shoulders trying to get her attention but got nothing. Lucielle gave up as she looked out the window trying to see if she could find what River was looking at. When she saw nothing she started to call River’s name again.

A few moments later River was shaken out of her thoughts and looked at Lucielle.  “What?” She asked as she looked at her best friend.

“I was calling your name for five minutes. What were you thinking about?” Lucielle asked, looking at River.

“It was nothing. I was just remembering the day I didn’t receive my powers.” River lied. Lucielle looked at her suspicion on her face but decided to shake it off.

“I should go.” River said as she looked at Jomen who looked beyond annoyed at this point. She would turn to leave Lucielles room and as she started to walk down the hallway Lucielle ran up behind her hugging her slipping a note into Rivers pocket. “You better come back to see me soon,” Lucielle said as she let go of River and smiled as she watched her friend walk to the door. Lucielle gave a small discreet nod as River left and River nodded back before she opened the door and left.

As River made her way back home she already knew that Jomen would tell her parents about what had happened. As the two walked in silence River started thinking about what she would do when she got home. She already expected chores plus whatever punishment she would receive for talking back to Jomen. As she walked down the street she had her head down trying to keep her identity a secret even though that was near impossible. She was the daughter of Thayer and Lilith. She looked just like both of them so there was no hiding who her parents were.

River arrived at home and opened the door and walked inside. Jomen followed her inside and went off to find Lilith. River took her shoes off and walked to her room quickly hoping that she could make it there before either of her parents realized that she was home. As soon as she got to her room River let out a sigh of relief and started taking her hair out of the braid that it had been put in that morning. She carefully removed the white rose that was in her hair and put it to the side.

River looked at her reflection in the mirror and sighed brushing her hair back. “They won’t know will they?” She asked herself quietly. Rivers' reflection said nothing in return. She sighed as she looked at herself before turning away.

There was a sharp knock on her door and River jumped up. She turned towards the door and smiled, acting like she was brushing her hair. “Come in.” She called as she turned back towards her mirror. The door opened and she heard Lilith's brisk footsteps as she walked inside. “Acting like a child again River?” Lilith said as she looked her daughter up and down.

“No mother. I was simply proving a point that I should be allowed to visit my friends.” River said, turning to look at her mother.

“You talked back to the protector that I have so graciously given you. Without him, you would have died ten years ago.” Lilith said as she walked up to River.

“Well, it wasn’t my fault. Jomen was complaining because I wanted to hang out with Lucielle. She’s protected me just as much if not more than Jomen ever has.” River said.

“Don’t talk back to me,” Lilith said as she stood towering over her daughter. She glared at RIver her violet eyes almost piercing. It was times like these that River knew her mother was using her power which was ineffective on herself.

“I was just saying. You always think that you know what is right for me but let me do something that I want for once.” River snapped. “You always shelter me from everyone but all I want to do is be normal.”

“You can be normal as soon as you have your powers. Then I will stop sheltering you.” Lilith said as she grabbed her daughter's wrist and made her look at her. Thayer had heard the ruckus from the living room and walked down the hall into the room. “What is going on here?!” He snapped getting defensive of his wife. As soon as Thayer had entered the room River bowed her head afraid to speak against her father; especially knowing what he was capable of.

“Nothing father..” River mumbled quietly.

“Do not mumble,” Thayer said as he glared at River. He was still wondering to this day why he had agreed to let his daughter live even though she was completely worthless to him. She could never become the leader of the Crescent Circle when he and Lilith died. Before then there would need to be another heir. Someone else who could take over since River couldn’t.

“I said, nothing father!” River said, her head shooting up. Thayer would glare as he wrapped an arm protectively around Lilith.

“Have some respect. Your mother and I are doing everything in our power to defend you. To protect you from those who have heard about your…disability.” Thayer said disgust hidden underneath his tone.

“Did I ask you to protect me? Did I ask to have this disability!?” River said, looking at her father.

“Of course not. When I had the choice I chose to save you instead of having you burnt because you were powerless. I could have thrown you into the woods where other creatures would feast on you. I could have sent you to live with humans. I didn’t. I chose to keep you here where you are safe. ” Thayer said.

River looked down ashamed. She had heard about what could have happened to her multiple times because she didn’t have powers but every time it made her grateful for her parents. They had protected her even when she was powerless. They cared about her even though they didn’t show it as other families did.

“Dinner will be done in ten minutes,” Lilith said as she walked out of the room with Thayer behind her. Thayer shot one last glance at River before leaving the room. As soon as they both were gone River went and sat on the bed closing her eyes pulling her knees to her chest. She started rocking herself back and forth to keep herself from completely coming apart. She didn’t want to have a breakdown when she knew she would have to see her parents again shortly.

A few minutes later River got up from her bed and walked out towards the dining room where both of her parents were already eating. She dished up a plate for herself and sat down eating quickly.  The awkward silence between her and her parents made her even more uncomfortable than she already was. She was never going to be good enough for them both. She was powerless and her parents are the most powerful witches in the coven.

As soon as she finished eating, River got up and went back to her room. She closed her door and changed into her nightgown. She would go and open the curtains stepping out onto the small balcony she had attached to her room and closed her eyes. The breeze blew her hair to the side and she smiled as she opened her eyes looking up at the full moon. She smiled slightly to herself as she brushed her hair back.

River heard a small thump behind her and turned around immediately to see the one person she wanted to see. Ernu stood behind her and held his arms out for her. River ran into his arms, closing her eyes, hugging him tightly. “I thought you weren’t going to show up.” RIver mumbled quietly.

“I wouldn’t miss today for the world,” Ernu said as he leaned in gently, putting his head on hers. River sighed contently as she looked up at him smiling. “What sort of trouble have you got in now?” He asked, looking at River.

“The usual.” River said with a shrug.

“Nothing special. Nothing bigger than usual?” Ernu said a small challenge in his voice.

“I got to see you.” River said.

“But you get to see me every night. You know that.” Ernu said as he pulled away from River.

“I know. But it is still something special because it’s you. My childhood best friend.” River said as she smiled up at him.

“Yes, I know that,” Ernu said playfully.

“So you remembered that today is a very special day?” River asked eagerly.

“Of course I do River.”

“Then what day is it? Why is it so special?” River said practically shaking with excitement looking up at Ernu.

“It’s your birthday.” He whispered as he leaned close to River's ear.

“Mhm.” River smiled.

“Happy birthday princess,” he whispered before gently kissing River.
