Chapter 4: The outside World

Qin Ning walked toward the narrow corridor. It was lit with a dim light , but Qin Ning was able to see perfectly . After merely four minutes of walk , she reached the corridor end . It was a stalemate.

'There must be a hidden exit' she thought.

Qin Ning inspected the walls  and found the left one  a little different , and precisely as she run her hand over the cold surface , she found a hidden trigger .However ,instead of feeling delighted , Qin Ning was skeptical .

She took a step back and inspected the ground , then lifted her head toward the ceiling and raised her arm . The next second , her eyes gleamed .

She felt it .She  managed to catch  the flow of a  small breeze coming from above her head .

Qin Ning immediately put her foot on a certain location then right away , with a tick sound the hatch opened up , afterward a ladder slowly went down .

The trigger on the wall was a trap , if an intruder successfully escaped to this point and choose the trigger , he would probably have a miserable ending .

Qin Nin climbed up , all the way to another hatch , she adjusted the wires of its panel and successfully opened it .

When she got out ,a cold breeze brushed against her skin , the sky was red blue, she saw the legendary red sun overshadowing the other stars.

It shone brightly , looking arrogantly at earth .

Qin Ning smiled , she didn’t turn into a zombie .

Whether it was because she belonged to the category of the lucky humans or because of the fluid she created , it was a question she threw at the back of her head , to study in free time .

Qin Ning happily strolled down the forest . The path was safe, and no zombie was around which made her journey to the city  smooth and easy .

At the front of a clothes shop , Qin Ning spotted six zombies . Seeing them ,She couldn’t help but shook her head in disappointment .

‘They didn’t even notice me? I hope their fighting abilities won’t be as dull as their senses’

Qin Ning picked up a metallic bar from a trashcan , and walked toward the shop .

The sound of approaching footsteps attracted the zombies , they unsteadily made they way towards Qin Ning, their running speed was deplorable .

Qin Ning was faster, she swung the tube at the closest zombie's head and the latter fell on the ground , skull smacked .

Qin Ning sighed, one hit was enough to deal with it . What if she had used her full strength , would the head be send flying ? 

The girl bend her body and run to the next one, this time she hit the abdomen, there were a cracking sound and the zombie fell backward. He struggled for some time before managing to stood up with his twisted body .

“If I don’t hit the head , it won’t kill it , huh ?“

Qin Ning  finished it off with a hit on the head , this time not only was the skull smacked but the strength of the blow  made the neck snap as well .

She finished the remaining four in less than a minute .

She looked at the ugly corpses laying on the ground , then at her dark tainted clothes .

“These things don’t feel pain, their only weapons are their teeth and sharp nails , their reaction is dull, strength not remarkable , speed let not mention it , and their weakness is the brain”

“If all the zombies are like this , this apocalypse would be a big joke”

Qin Ning entered the shop , she dealt with the zombies inside and started shopping .

She first changed into clean female clothes, a black pant, a red simple shirt ,a black hooded jacket and combat boots .

She tied her hair into a ponytail with a red rubber band and took a backpack in which  she stuffed  the items she brought from the lab in addition to some spare clothes .

Lastly , Qin Ning picked up a cap and ended her shopping spree.

Qin Ning headed to the closest supermarket, she wiped the zombies in there and picked up snacks to eat .

The shelves were only half filled , some survivors must have looted the place before her .

But she managed to find some bread , canned fish, candies and juice .

Everything else rotted away .Qin Ning throw what was edible in her bag and departed .

The streets were filled with zombie , Qin Ning didn’t engage in meaningless fights and choose to take the less crowded route.

She walked for two hours, stopping by various stores looking for supplies, but she was too late as everything was already taken  . It had been three weeks now since the apocalypse begins , street stores were  targeted first by the survivors , as there weren't many zombies in them .

Qin Ning knew that only in crowded places like large shopping malls where a lot of zombies roams , would she be able to find food .

However , the sky had already started to darken . Qin Ning could only wait for the next day to resume her exploration .

Qin Ning choose a five star hotel to stay for the night ,not only there were less zombie than cheaper hotels but the accomadations were comfortable . She first went to the kitchens and took a knife . Then floor after another , she wiped up the zombies , with her perception, no zombie even those hidden in the rooms , could escape the massacre .

Thanks to her new body , her endurance was high , even after all the killing , Tiredness didn’t oppress her body .

Qin Ning went up to the last floor , the royal suite . The elevator was out of service, the only way up was the staircase . When she arrived at her destination, Qin Ning didn’t open the door directly , she first used her ability and inspected the suite.

'It seems empty' as she was about to head in , she suddenly perceived a faint aura.

Qin Ning went in, and admired the luxurious design and fourniture, she headed to the bedroom and opened the door  .

Her gaze fell on the skinny boy , laying on the ground .The child had only skin on him even his bones outlines were visible  .

Qin Ning approached , squatted down beside him and put two fingers on his wrist .

“Mh ....still alive , you must have a very strong will to live , I like it “ Qin Ning pleasant voice echoed in the empty suite.

She gently lifted the feeble boy to put him on the king sized bed then took a bottle of water from her backpack and dropped some droplets in the boy mouth .

Then went back to the kitchen and crashed some walnut with cooked rice , added some milk, dried herbs  , then mixed the whole with boiled water . She brought the soup in a boil to the bedroom and patiently fed up the unconscious boy .

Afterward , Qin Ning ate some bread and went to sleep on the sofa .

Qin Ning woke up early the next day, it was the first time she slept so peacefully since she came to this world , it was wonderful !

The voices in her head weren't as loud as before but they are still there, cursing , crying and shouting constantly. Qin Ning wished to have a mute button to shut them up at once, but too bad , as she absorbed those consciousnesses she could only bit her lip and endure their indignation and anger toward her.

But she felt better now .

In a good mood, Qin Ning  drank some milk and ate  chocolate , she went to the kitchen and inspected the huge fridge . She picked up the less rotten vegetables, and some chicken ,and prepared a soup with it , she make sure to crash the vegetable and chicken pieces before going back to the suite .

The boy was still unconscious but his complexion had some improvements . She fed him the soup , spoon after spoon until the last one . Then examined his body.

“If  your body is nourished properly , you will wake up tomorrow”

Qin Ning looked at his small face, this boy must have starved for three days before collapsing from dehydration .

The floors below were filled with zombies , a little boy couldn’t possibly be able to pass through them and get out of the suite to look for food.

Qin Ning went down the staircases while deep in thought . She went to the main hall , more accurate to the reception the computer couldn’t be operated without electricity .Qin Ning searched the counter and found a register .

Luxurious hotels keep numeric and writing records of all the clients that stayed in their care .

Qin Ning flipped the paged and looked at the last client who booked the royal suite .

The name was Gu Yang from Z-city

Probably a young master from a wealthy family in Z-city .

Qin Ning dumped the register on the counter and left the hotel .

In another part of  B-City, three military vehicules drove through the streets , crashing zombies on their path , they went all the way to the hospital .

They stopped at the eastern building , and turned off the engines .

The doors opened simultaneously. Well equipped soldiers got down one after another , they got rid off the zombies wondering at the entrance then gave the signal .

Two men came down , one young th other in his forties . The soldier immediately encircled them .

“The entry of the facility is in the basement “ Said the middle aged man .

“Understood” The squad captain gave the signal to proceed inside the building.

They advanced smoothly , killed the slightless zombie they met on their way .

The basement has twelve zombies clad in black , the once security guards of the facility .

They attacked when they heard their footsteps , but against guns, their fate was death .

After securing the basement, the young man scanned his hand imprint and input a series of numbers in the panel . With a tic , the iron door opened .

The soldier were the first to enter , the two scientists stayed in the middle of the formation .

The lab was sunk in darkness , thanks to their flashlight , the group didn’t have much trouble to advance. Their target was the inner part of the lab , they sped up the pace and reached it  quickly .

Seeing the iron door , it was the middle aged man who took the lead .As Dr.Lan assistant, Min Yinghas the right to enter the private lab .

But when he saw the panel which unlocks the door , he was dumbfounded .

The panel box was opened and the wires had been taken out .

“Someone has been here before ?! “ The surprised tone , attracted the captain vigilance .

He looked at the messy  wires and added “Someone who wasn’t supposed to be here “

“ Captain , can I ?”A young voice came from the group .

The captain turned  to the young soldier “Little Ping, Can you open the door ?”

“Yes , captain” Little Ping nodded .

“then “The captain made way , Little Ping inspected the wires  then  disconnected some and reattached others .

“It's done”

Min Ying input the code and the door automatically  opened .

The captain gave  little Ping a nod , then lifted his gun up  . Once the door fully opened , the soldiers went in and inspected the lab and the office but no one was there .

Min Ying went in the office and brought back a pile of documents , the young man took the computers drives then turned to the board .

“Mmh  .... Pr.Min”

“What is it ?”

Min Yang walked to his disciple , and looked at the board , then froze ;

On the whiteboard, two distinct hand writings , one was  Dr.Lan's , but the other must be the stranger's .

“Impossible ..”Pr.Min had come to this lab many times and had assisted the Dr.Lan in his research , he knew were the problem lays and were the Doctor bottleneck was, the formula .

He didn’t manage to find the correct combination to complete the formula, but somehow the stranger found it .

“Quick , Wuying, go to the injection room immediately , and Captain, help me collect all the paper containing this handwriting , we mustn’t let a single letter slip our hands “

The soldiers quickly busied themselves and searched the whole lab . After some minutes the young man, Wei Wuying, returned .

“Pr.Min, the injection room had been used not long ago ,  I managed to extract a sample of the serum from the tubes “He lifted a small tube containing a grayish liquid .

Pr.Min , looked at it like if he were looking at a priceless treasure .

“Such a pity , there is only this little “he sighed dejectedly “Let hurry back , Dr.Lan must be waiting”

The group brought the documents and samples then left the lab . Their way back was already cleared, they took the cars and headed to Z city.
