Chapter 3: Welcome to the apocalypse

The answer was in the director office !

Qin Ning followed the directions she memorized, picked up a surgical scissor on the way and walked to the lab inner part . When she saw the iron door , she stopped .

Only the director can enter . The door would only open after the director had scanned his fingerprints.

Qin Ning used the sharp scissor to open the panel box, and trifled with the wires inside .Her hands moved swiftly  It didn’t even  took ten second , when a 'ding' sound echoed and the door opened  .

Qin Ning didn’t bother to reclose the panel box, she quickly strode inside the private lab .

The room was large, rich with various advanced equipment. Unlike the chaos outside , this room was neat and tidy , reflecting the owner nature .

When she walked in she swept her gaze over the facility with interest , her attention was shortly caught by a white board filled with equations. The director was working on a important project, such a petty that he left in  a hurry without completing it . Qin Ning looked at the board for about ten minutes then shifted her gaze to the cubic room on the platform .

The director Office .

The office was at the back of the private lab , it has three  glass walls in front and anyone could see the  inside . Qin Ning entered and glanced at the red button on the back wall .

the lid was still lifted up ! 

Someone had used it recently to trigger the alarm.

Qin Ning inspected the office , it was simple decorated, not fancy but not plain .

She sat on the desk chair and cracked the locked computer ,outpassing the needed password .

Beside the project and research files there were nothing else, Qin Ning opened the mailbox.The director didn’t have time to disconnect, thus Qin Ning was able to access  his emails .

The last mail received was from the deputy of  science institution ,it was as follow :

“Dr.Lan

Leave the lab immediately !

Humanity is at sake !

 A squad was sent to escort you back . Gathering point , the forest's eastside “

The email was short , the sender must have typed it in a hurry .

Pinned to the email was two videos .

Qin Ning casually clicked on the play button .

On the screen , a crowded street , the people were all holding their phones and filming the sky .

When the screen showed what they were looking at , Qin Ning subconsciously straightened her back on the chair .

The sun , this brightest star in the solar system, was being overshadowed by an even larger orb .

The red orb light overwhelmed that of the sun and the sky gradually became faint red .

looking at the sun and the orb , it was like looking at the stars and moon at night . One neatly larger than the other and  brighter .

The crowd was shocked and in panic, soon a cry was heard , people collapsed on the ground one after the other , afterwards, their bodies convulsed . The remaining people screamed .

The camera zoomed on a little girl who was crying beside her mother on the ground, she kept calling her desperately. The mother suddenly stopped shaking, turned to her daughter and bite her on her arm .

Ahhh!

The pained scream echoed allover the office .The mother was no longer a human , her eyes turned white like those of corpses and her face was covered with black veins , she was chewing on her own daughter arm  !

Black veins appeared on the little girl arm and like a parasite they spread to her head until her eyes turned white too . only then did the mother let go  and turned to target another human bystander .

Same happened to the people who collapsed , they all turned into man-eating zombies.

The person recording was frightened shitless, he let out a shrieking scream and run for dear life, however, he was immediately surrendered by zombies and was eating up alive by dozen of them , although , the phone couldn’t record the scene as it had fallen on the ground, the sounds were enough to describe how atrocious it was .

The video ended with the screams of the poor man .

Qin Ning immediately clicked on the second video .

Unlike the first, the second was a CCTV footage ,not of only one location , but of different places , all pieced together . It showed how it started with the people collapsing , how they stood up again, and how they chased after their humans friends, some scene were gruesome , the aftermath was a ground covered with blood , limbs thrown everywhere, puddle of ‘meat’ in corners , and zombies which number increased with each bite .

After seeing both videos , Qin Ning smiled brightly , eyes still glued on the massacre.

“This is awesome!” She cried out overjoyed “An apocalypse, a stinking freaking apocalypse”

Qin Ning looked like a five years old child who just entered an amusement park .

She was excited and  quivered with anticipation.

“Shut up” Qin Ning suddenly shouted out in annoyance , her soft voice echoed in the empty office “I have to think , to plan , I don’t have time for your bullshit , so keep it quiet “

She talk but ... she was all alone in the office .

Qin Ning held her chin and mumbled quickly “I have to go out and see , no ,what if I transform into a zombie once I took a step out?, but maybe not , I want to go out , I don’ t want to stay here forever, but can I survive out there ?.... this body is weak , and the assholes in me would take any opportunity take control of me , I can’t be careless …” her gaze drifted to the white board and her lips curved up .

“Yes, I will definitely leave .and this doctor Lan had left me the best gift ever...... “

Qin Ning run out the office and returned minutes later, arms loaded .

She put her harvest on a table .

“So what we have here...... ten canned of soup , eight packs of jerky meat, one bag of cookies and a chocolate bar, with more than enough water to drink in the storage room ” She looked at the light lamps “Also , one hundred and sixty hours worth of electricity , even  if I turn off , all the light in the rest of the lab and unplug the devices, I will get only that much from the generator “

“and thanks to this guys" Qin Ning tapped her head slightly " I won’t be able to sleep a wink “

“Lastly , this incomplete and flawed formula “

 “A week without sleep , just rationed food...."Qin Ning clapped her hand then smiled " I can do it , I have to work and finish it the earlier possible , I’m looking forward to the final result”

A week later ;

Qin Ning lay on the long chair , tied to the arm chair . Tubes were injected into both her arms and neck.

Grayish liquid was slowly being injected into her organism .

The girl had become skinny , and even paler , her face was colorless , it highlighted the heavy purplish bags under her eyes .

After one minutes, her body trembled . Qin Ning weakly gritted her teeth to endure the pain , her eyes may be closed but she wasn’t asleep .

In this critical  situation , if she fainted , her body would be taken over by the consciousnesses in her head .

Her body shook violently , and faint cracking sounds were heard .

Some blood came out of her ears and nose .

The bones fractured in every corner, the muscle were corroded by the fluid , the  tendon melted away , skin turned red and a thick layer of dead skin was formed . The changes were also happening to her internal organs .Like a raging fire burning inside and out .

Her body was no longer that of a human . One can’t imagine the pain , she went through to end up like this . However, throughout the process of the cleansing, Qin Ning didn’t make any sound .

After the cleansing, it was time to rebuild .

Bones regrew as hard as iron , muscle cells took shape as sturdy and firm as those of Olympic athlete , new tendon formed even more durable and flexible and a flawless hard skin covered her body .

The fat melted away , the imperfections got reshaped, the impurities were expelled through sweat , giving of a fool smell .

The all process of cleansing and rebuilding took eight hour  straight of torture .

When her heart beat slowed down and the fire burning her faded away . Qin Ning opened her eyes and took a deep breath .

She smiled , a sincere smile . Qin Ning could feel that the experiment  was a great success .

Her body was  new and she felt even more clear headed than before.

The headache disappeared and the voices seemed further .

With a flung of her hand  Qin Ning ripped the rope tying her and stood up .

She removed the layer of yellowish dead skin , like a snake removing its shedding skin .

She admired her fair milky skin , it was soft and tender .

Qin Ning turned to the computer, and inspected her reflection .

After getting rid of the dead skin, a beautiful face bloomed out . If in the past the original Qin Ning was considered a rare beauty , the current one was an earth shaking goddess . A mystical beauty that could bring cities to ruin .The color of her black hair became lighter gleaming under the light and her dark eyes had a print of gray in them , captivating the onlookers .

Satisfied , Qin Ning felt the strength flowing in her body . She also discovered that her mind had somehow developed, her sense were not only enhanced surpassing that of the king of predators, but her perception too . Now she is able to feel the space around her and noticed that on the  floor above , three zombies were rooming around .

Qin Ning used water and some soap  to wash her body off the fool smell then changed into man's clothes she found in the changing room . there were no available female clothes in the lab, leaving her no choice but to pick the smallest pant and  shirt .

Thankfully , she was now taller by ten centimeters, increasing her height to 1.77 , thus the clothes were able to fit .

She than retrieved , few medicine, two water bottles, a small analyzing device she personally made and wrapped them in a bed sheet she flung on her back .

It was finally time to leave the facility !
