The Dream Carrier

Review: 9/10 from 7 ratings

Zavier is an unremarkable suburbanite living just outside of Seattle. He is finishing up his final semester of high school and preparing to go to college despite a nagging lack of excitement for his future. This all changes when he meets Yafu, a young man from the Biterrain, a pair of two alien worlds connected by the magical soul energy that resides in its inhabitants. Yafu has accidentally been thrown to Earth chasing Shen, the leader of an Earth obsessed cult from the Biterrain known as the Poison Fang and Yafu’s mortal enemy. As Yafu coerces a reluctant Zavier into his vengeance fueled mission, the two meet Arigo, a mysterious and powerful defender of Earth from Biterrain interlopers such as the Fang, and Anenna, his faithful assistant and ward who has her own murky past in the Biterrain. After the discovery that Zavier was used as an unwitting and seemingly rule breaking anchor by Shen to pull himself to Earth, Arigo sends Zavier, along with Yafu and Annena, to the Biterrain to meet a woman named Radia who may be able to diagnose his anomalous condition. On their journey there they face the perils and dangers of this magic world including the resurgent Fang and the terrifying Cirko, the first of Arigo’s assistants and the killer of Anenna’s sister. In addition to the physical dangers they face, each of the three protagonists must deal with rapid and sudden upheaval in their own lives. Zavier weighs his own feelings of inadequacy against the backdrop of his sudden and mysterious importance and relevance while Yafu struggles with the limits to his thirst for vengeance and his future without it. Finally, Anenna must begin to confront a new identity as the last parts of her old one abandon her. Hanging over all of this is the mystery around the Immortal King, the central figure to the Biterrain’s dominant religion who allegedly disappeared to Earth many millennia ago. Despite being central to the dogma around their messianic figure, Earth has been relegated to myth and conjecture by the general populace of the Biterrain due to the inability to validate its existence. How will Zavier navigate in a world where he holds its holy grail within his own identity and who can he really trust in a world of such contrived obliviousness?
