As the imperial city, St. Andis had quite an unusual terrain.

The path of the gods, on which the Wujinxuan Palace was located, was located in the Great Rift Valley. The entire city of St. Andis began at the Wujinxuan Palace and extended down to the west side of the Rift Valley, with the terrain evenly sloping down. Looking at the shape from the map, it resembled a semi-circle with uneven edges.

The whole imperial city’s construction style was mainly in line with the Wujinxuan Palace, with its calming tone. When one stood and looked down from the highest level of the Wujinxuan Palace, the numerous roofs made of black ink and gold inlaid with uneven height gave a sense of grandeur that always made people’s blood boil.

Except for today…..

Oswald, who had received the urgent news from the patrolling city guards, worldlessly mounted on horseback and galloped out of the Palace with a small squad of black-armoured troops.

The rain poured outside without stopping. The accumulated water flowed along the terrain into pools on the ground, splashing around everywhere under the horses’ hooves.

There were six small and large medical institutions in the imperial city. Oswald went through all of them incessantly. The crisp sound of horses’ hooves sounded back and forth through the streets of the imperial city, seemingly didn’t stop for a rest. The atmosphere was so tense that even the city inhabitants, who were used to the sound of horses’ hooves, could not help but peer out of their windows. They looked out for a few moments before hastily retreating and tightly closing their doors and windows.

But they couldn’t really do it because those flying insects were too much to be stopped.

“Your Majesty, you’ve seen it yourself. All the medical institutions are fully crowded.” The commander of the patrolling guard, Peter, pushed back his copper wire mask and said to Oswald. “It was even more chaotic before. It was heavily raining today, and the road was slippery, making it easy to trip and fall. One couldn’t move anymore once they knocked themselves down. There were people everywhere blocking the streets. I mobilised all the patrolling guards in the city before we could finally disperse and moved everyone to the nearest medical institution. But …..”

The streets were cleared, and the people were settled for the moment, but the fear had spread inexorably.

If this was only one or two people, the news could still be sealed temporarily so as not to cause more panic. But many people showed up with this situation across the city, and it couldn’t be locked anymore. Although the imperial city, St. Andis, was large, numerous rumours had broken out at every corner of the streets and spread widely across the whole city in a span of lunchtime.

Peter said, “Most of them were elderly and children, who were prone to knocks and bumps. This time, they all fell with a gust of the wind. We were afraid to make it more severe, so we were cautious when moving them. We lost track of time by going forth and back to move them one by one. When we came out of the medical institution, the street had already become like this.”

Oswald tugged on the reins and scanned the area. His solemn face was hidden behind a copper wire mask, making his expression unreadable.

The Jinshi Empire had been suppressed for nearly 700 years. But even after suffering a loss, a wealthy person was still better off than ordinary people. At least, the imperial city could still be counted as a lively city. But now, the insect’s plague and weird “petrification” disease had made St. Andis into a lifeless, empty city in just half a day.

Most houses had their doors tightly shut, fearing that it would leak even the most minor crack.

There was no sign of pedestrians in the crisscrossed streets. Apart from the neverending cries from the overcrowded medical institutions, there was not even the sound of human voices in other places.

The city, which usually had a calm tone, suddenly gave out an empty, gloomy, and lifeless feeling.

The imperial city had become like this. There was no need to imagine what happened to the rest of the other cities.

The old priest from the Priest Institution dragged his inconvenient body and rushed to the Imperial Palace on a horse in the evening. Two of his young assistant followed behind him; their expression was anxious as if they were sitting on fire.

They almost rolled down from the horseback when they saw Oswald. The old priest couldn’t do it because half of his body had also turned into sandstone.

“Your Majesty! Your Majesty, there are urgent reports from the Red Iron Army in the west and the Bronze Army in the west garrison!” The old priest shouted from the horseback.

His two assistants hurriedly lifted him down and gently put him down on a chair.

Oswald could feel the space between his brows twitch upon hearing these two words of “urgent report.” “Is this situation also appearing in the barracks?”

“I think so!” The old priest repeatedly nodded before finished taking his breath. “Because they sent a signal asking for help from the imperial palace to station additional physicians in the garrison.”

The history of long-time war had made the Jinshi Empire create a complete set of emergency signals. Like the sand messenger, they would appear in the observation pool in the Priest Institution. Different colours and states indicated different meanings. No matter how systematic, such messages were limited in the meaning they could convey. So, it would only be depended on as a means to transmit military reports during an extreme emergency.

Usually, a more detailed urgent message would be traditionally sent to the base camp while sending that signal. The one in Kevin’s hand was the one they had just received.

He released the almost dying white eagle, fastened his mask, and mounted a hippogriff. The journey into the gate and courtyard was uneventful. He almost galloped up to Oswald’s front before giving a sharp tug on the reins. “There was a massive scale of this situation appearing in the Bronze garrison, and most of them were caused by being knocked during practice. Furthermore, Mio said he had watched for the whole day. He found out those flying insects mainly flew from the northeast. He has now ordered additional fire pits to be built along the borderline and used the smoke to block for a while. He has also asked the physicians to bring some medicinal herbs over to burn.”

Before the hippogriff had fully braked, Kevin already flipped down with his long legs and handed the military report to Oswald.

“The northeast direction?” Oswald pinched the spot between his brows and swiftly glanced at the rough content in the report. “There’s Mayne Town in his northeast, isn’t it?”

Kevin nodded and thoughtfully added, “But if you draw a line from Mayne Town, it reaches the Carat River.”

“You’re saying that –” Oswald just wanted to speak when another galloping horse rushed over.

“……”

Today’s military reports dropped in as if they didn’t need a charge. He had first received one from the Priest Institution and then Kevin’s. Kevin hadn’t left, but the Commander of the Red Iron Army’s base camp, Camus, had also arrived.

The military report brought by Camus happened to be the same sentence that Oswald didn’t get to finish – those flying insects nested along the Carat River.

“Rad led several people to turn over almost all the soil along the coast, and the underground was full of insect eggs. They used to be there too, but not so excessive. Rad said it looked like ‘someone had spread something like a growth fertiliser’ along the river shore. They decided to burn the turnover ground and get rid of some of them. But the rain is too heavy, and it won’t be very effective.”

“Fertiliser?” Kevin frowned. He couldn’t help but recall those piles of sand on that night. Those things basically couldn’t be touched using hands. Except for the ones falling into the river, they had buried the remaining under the ground to avoid accidentally injuring other people.

Could those piles of sand cause it?

Once the matter was related to the Sand Ghost, anything became possible.

“Furthermore, Rad set up a small team to mingle into the Beifeicu Empire. Your Majesty, what is your guess?” Camus said to Oswald. “The amount of flying insects in the Beifeicu Empire is almost twice as much as here. It’s said that Sapir’s illness had worsened, and he couldn’t even get out of bed anymore. His eldest son Markoff is dead. Bott, the youngest that only liked to play, was urgently called back to the imperial city. It’s not known what their next plan is.”

Bott was the little bastard betting on Mac and Shaw at that time. Oswald recalled his face that was full of improper intention and suddenly snorted. “Whenever a Country is nearing its end, God will always send several idiots who will do everything to use up all of its remaining struggle against fate.”

However, the direr the situation at the Beifeicu Empire made Kevin more sure that those flying insects were related to the sand piles. To be exact, it must’ve been related to the things inside the bottle given by the Sand Ghost to the Beifeicu Empire. The main culprits of this “strange disease” must be the mother insect he shot through and those small flying insects.

Oswald clearly thought of the same thing as Kevin. He said with a cold expression, “I knew it. The Sand Ghost wouldn’t be so kind and gave Sapir an aid for nothing while they retreated to their old lair.”

The plage and the “strange disease” were enough to keep the other clans preoccupied, taking care of the head and ignoring the tail[1]. And when the rainy season passed, they would make a comeback. The other clans would have suffered significant damages and would have been quickly taken down by them.

The furious thing was that although you knew of the entire process, development, and purpose, you couldn’t help but continue walking forward because they couldn’t delay the time to stop the plague.

Everyone had been bitten by one of those flying insects. It used to be an itch for a few days, but now it was a sword hanging over their heads, which could fall at any time, like constant pressure.

Everyone suffered for the whole night, regardless of the one inside or outside the imperial palace.

Oswald didn’t sleep for the whole night and kept looking at the garrison’s military reports. The Priest Institution was also brightly lit, and several priests lay beside the observation pond, not daring to close their eyes. The inside of the Medical Institution was even busier, and their feet almost didn’t touch the floor. The sooner they could produce an effective medicine, the sooner they could feel relieved.

Except for the patrolling city guards, more city guards were divided into numerous small teams and hurried into every city and town in the Jinshi Empire.

In the wee hours, Ian, the old housekeeper, who always put on a stiff face, couldn’t move because he had bumped his neck during sleep, making the top of his spine to the back of his neck hardened.

Ben, the little lion, found out his right ring and index fingers had also become sandstone when he woke up because they were pressed during sleep.

Angel’s left eye had turned ash-grey and lifeless as if someone had carved out a piece from a sculpture and shoved it into his eye socket.

And in just one day, the greyish-yellow line on Cynthia’s elbow had spread another centimetre upwards.

……

Kevin propped both hands at Oswald’s desk, slightly lowered his gaze, and said with a calm and unrefutable tone. “It’s not difficult to get into the Tomb of the God Phae. I can go alone.”

Oswald couldn’t help but scold him. “Alone? Are you crazy?! What a joke!”
