"I don't want to be good," King Jaren said, fixing his eyes on Queen Dora. "I've had enough."
Azar froze, appalled. "Grandpapa doesn't want to be a good boy like Azar?" he asked tearfully. His big, round emerald eyes immediately filled with tears.
King Jaren didn't know what to say to the little black dragon grandson he adored so much.
While King Jaren was thinking about how to pacify the distressed little Azar, Alya spoke up.
"If Grandpapa doesn't want to be a good boy like Azar, Grandpapa can be a good girl like Alya," the little white dragon spoke up. "Does Grandpapa want to be a good girl like Alya?"
For a moment, no one spoke. Then, everyone, including King Jaren, burst out laughing.
Azar and Alya stared at the bunch of laughing humans, and the two little dragons looked rather affronted.
"Ah, my adorable little ones, you are very, very good," King Jaren said finally, rubbing both Azar and Alya's smooth scales affectionately. "Grandpapa will try to be as good as both Azar and Alya, all right?"
That mollified the two little dragons.
"Promise, Grandpapa?" Azar asked.
"I promise, little Azar," King Jaren said.
"Good," Azar said, satisfied. Then he nuzzled King Jaren's face with his small head again.
Alya did the same.
Everyone heaved a sigh of relief – especially Mana, Jules, Raven and Bella – who had never seen their Papa being like this before, and all four of them had been quite frightened by his demeanour and his words right now.
Queen Dora glanced at the children and then at her husband, and sighed, feeling guilty. Both of them had their own adequate and justifiable reasons for acting the way they did back then – but no matter what, the fact remained that King Jaren had been deeply hurt by what had happened, and for ten years he had struggled by himself.
"This is a happy occasion, indeed," Queen Carolina said. "It is good to see you alive and well, Queen Dora. Well met."
Queen Carolina was clearly trying to cheer everyone up.
And it was a good attempt, too.
"Our family is now complete," Jules said, taking one hand of King Jaren and one of Queen Dora, and bringing their hands together. "Isn't it, Papa and Ma?"
How could King Jaren and Queen Dora argue with that?
The Imperial Supreme Mage of the Sapphire Kingdom cleared his throat awkwardly.
Everyone turned to look at him, and the elderly man flushed.
"Actually," he said in a low voice. "About the cursed living ghost corpse – if – if Queen Dora could let us know of any clues she thinks that may be useful…"
Queen Dora sighed. "I'm afraid I don't know much about a cursed living ghost corpse," she muttered. "But I will get in touch with my master, and perhaps he would be able to help."
"Where is your master, if I may ask, Queen Dora?" the Captain of the imperial shadow guards of the Sapphire Kingdom asked politely.
"He lives on the border of the Emerald Kingdom and the Amber Kingdom – pretty close to the point where we share a border with the Sapphire Kingdom on the western side," she said. She frowned. "At least, that is where I met him last before I fell into a coma last year."
King Jaren and Queen Carolina exchanged a glance.
"Shall we head to your master's place and pay him a visit, Dora?" King Jaren asked.
Queen Dora shrugged. "If you want," she said. "Is it very critical to get hold of this cursed living ghost corpse right away?"
"It is," King Jaren and Queen Carolina said at the same time.
"All right, then, we can head out whenever you are ready. It shouldn't take us more than a day to reach," Queen Dora murmured. "Although – if we want to get there faster, we could use an array, but I don't think anyone other than Jaren, Jules and Mana will be able to use the array because it is tagged with me and my blood."
Mana frowned. "Ma, if it is tagged with your blood, then how will it allow Papa to go with you? Papa doesn't share any blood with you," she pointed out, curious to know how this array worked.
Queen Dora smiled. "Ah, but Jaren is my soulmate," she said. "We have a shared space, even. So he can go wherever I go, and any array that recognises me will recognise him. For you and Jules, Mana – since you both are my flesh and blood, you, too will be recognised."
Mana tapped her chin thoughtfully. "So – Big Brother and I are recognised because we are your children, and Papa is recognised because he is your soulmate?" she asked curiously.
Queen Dora nodded. "Yes, Mana, my clever girl. That is exactly how it works," she said. "Our little girl is really clever, isn't she?" she praised.
Mana narrowed her eyes. "So, shouldn't Big Brother's soulmate and my soulmate also be recognised by that logic?" she asked.
Queen Dora's eyes widened in shock. "Mana – you – you and Raven are soulmates? And – and Jules and Bella, too?" she asked, astonished and with a hint of disbelief in her voice.
After all, soulmates were very, very rare.
Mana nodded. "Yes, Big Brother Jules and Big Sister Bella are soulmates and have a shared space. Raven and I supposed to be fated soulmates and we, too, share a space. Isn't that why Azar and Alya chose to be our children?" she pointed out in casual manner.
Queen Dora jumped up and grabbed Mana's shoulders. "Fated soulmates?!" she demanded. "You and Raven are fated soulmates?!"
Mana nodded and Raven immediately moved closer to Mana protectively.
Queen Dora burst out laughing and her eyes sparkled in delight. "Oh, heavens, what a blessing, what a blessing!" she said happily. "Oh, my children, how wonderful, how wonderful!"
Mana, Raven, Jules and Bella stared at Queen Dora quizzically. Well, being soulmates was a nifty little thing especially with the shared space, and Mana was quite grateful for the extra bond that she and Raven had under the label of 'fated soulmates' – but was there something more to it than that? Why was Queen Dora so happy to hear this news all of a sudden?
"Do you know something about this, Dora?" King Jaren asked, frowning. The stuff he had heard about fated soulmates from King Corvus as well as Head Sage Yue hadn't been very encouraging, and it had made him worry even more about Mana and Raven instead of anything else.
Queen Dora grabbed King Jaren's hands excitedly. "Oh, Jaren, Jaren, my love! This is fantastic, absolutely fantastic! We really don't have anything to worry about with our children any more!" she said happily. "You must tell me all about how Mana found Raven and Jules found Bella – and then I will be able to connect that with what I know and we will figure out exactly what is to be done, especially with Mana and Raven!"
King Jaren's frown deepened. "I heard there are some strange prophecies in the Pearl Kingdom and the Obsidian Kingdom about fated soulmates," he murmured. "Those were not very encouraging. If anything, I worry more about Mana and Raven now. Is this not a burden for our children?"
Queen Dora shook her head. "No, no, not at all!" she said enthusiastically, grinning from ear to ear and looking rather like Jules at the moment – clearly Jules had inherited his smile from his mother.
King Jaren raised an eyebrow, not convinced at all.
"It really is a very good thing, trust me," Queen Dora said. "Especially for Mana!" She took King Jaren's hand again. "You have to tell me everything I have missed in this past year – don't leave anything out, all right?" she told him.
King Jaren sighed. "Of course I will tell you everything you want to know, my dear," he murmured. "When have I ever turned you down in my entire life?"
Queen Dora grinned and kissed her husband on the cheek.
King Jaren's cheeks turned red, and so did the tips of his ear lobes. "Dora, the children are here," he murmured.
Queen Dora giggled and pinched King Jaren's cheeks playfully. "So what? Aren't they our own flesh and blood? And aren't we legally and magically wedded man and wife?" she demanded.
Bella watched Queen Dora, her eyes shining with admiration. While Jules thought that her starry eyed appearance was rather enchanting, he also had a bad premonition in his heart that Bella was taking mental notes on how Queen Dora was teasing King Jaren, and that Jules himself would be subjected to similar teasing in the future!
Raven, on the other hand, was already familiar with this particular brand of teasing, for he had been subjected to this by Mana often enough.. No wonder they were mother and daughter, Raven thought to himself, and resigned himself to the fact that he would spend his entire life being teased like this by Mana…well, not that Raven minded terribly.
