An old man slowly stepped out of the shadows after the door opened.
An ominous feeling accompanied his appearance – as if the very magic around him was creepy and scary. Even the humans like King Jaren and Jules and Bella could feel it – no wonder their little baby dragons, who were much more sensitive to magic than the humans, had been so terrified.
King Jaren tightened his arm around the two baby dragons against his chest, almost instinctively trying to hide them away from this terrible magic in the air.
Jules and Bella also stepped forward protectively, trying to cover King Jaren and the two little dragons.
"Good to see you awake and alive, Dora," the old man said with a smile. "I see that you are back in one piece again properly this time." He narrowed his eyes and scanned Queen Dora with his pale eyes from top to toe. "The curse seems to be cleared out as well," he muttered. "Good, good."
"Thank you, master," Queen Dora said politely.
"So, what brings you here? And I see that you have also brought along your family? Is that your Jaren? He really does seem to be as handsome as you kept boasting about," the old man said, glancing at King Jaren.
King Jaren inclined his head in greeting, but didn't move from his position. "Hello," he said. "I am afraid I am not aware your name – how should I address you?" he asked.
It was clear that King Jaren didn't want to call him 'master' like Queen Dora did.
The old man chuckled. "My name is not very conducive to the human tongue, I am afraid," he said with a smile. "However, you may call me Zed."
"Thank you for saving my wife, Zed, and for helping her to keep my children safe," King Jaren said politely. "If there is anything I can do for you to show my gratitude…"
The old man waved his arm casually. "There is no need," he said casually. "I got an excellent disciple in return, and I got to see some interesting things. Besides, we are not on different sides, King Jaren – in fact, it is quite the contrary, actually. Our goals are well aligned with each other in the long run."
King Jaren was stunned into silence. Not only King Jaren, in fact, even Queen Dora and Jules and Bella was shocked speechless.
Before any of them could make a remark on this statement of his, though, Zed, who seemed to be oblivious to the surprise he had just given to his visitors with this words, moved on.
The old man's pale eyes turned to Jules next. "Ah, little Jules – he has grown up quite well, hasn't it? The last time I saw you, you were just a bawling baby, and you would pee on me every time I picked you up…" he murmured, a hint of fond nostalgia in his voice.
Jules's ears turned red, but to his credit, he maintained a straight face and greeted the old man politely, and then added, "I am afraid that I have no recollection of the time, Zed. I am sorry if I caused you any inconvenience."
"Well, you certainly did soil all my robes," the old man said fondly. "You were a rather cute baby – except when you peed on me – which was actually several times a day, so..."
Jules flushed as red as a tomato and looked away. Why must this creepy old man insist on embarrassing him like this in front of his elegant fiancée? What enmity did he have with this nasty old man?!
Bella, on the other hand, couldn't help herself any more, and burst into merry peals of laughter. She could imagine and cute and chubby baby Jules peeing on the scary old man with his cute little face scrunched up in displeasure!
"Dad, you peed on this scary old man?" Alya asked curiously, raising her head from King Jaren's chest, and looking at Jules curiously, her eyes glowing.
Jules shrugged helplessly. "I don't remember, little one," he murmured.
"Dad is a good boy, so Dad should pee on the scary old man!" Alya declared. "Dad, do you want to pee on the scary old man now?"
Even King Jaren couldn't stop himself from laughing at that – and as for Jules, he just wanted to dig a hole in the ground under him and hide for a while!
Azar looked up as well and smiled at his Uncle Jules. "Azar will help Uncle Jules pee on the scary old man, if Uncle Jules wants help!" the little black dragon offered.
Jules wanted to dig a deeper hole in the ground and bury himself completely now.
The old man Zed chuckled wryly and turned to Queen Dora. "What is this, Dora? What is this peculiar fascination about peeing on me that the children in your family have developed?" he asked ruefully.
Queen Dora was too busy trying to keep herself from laughing, too. "They are just children, master. And even you have to admit that your aura is quite scary. Children are naturally more sensitive to magic, so isn't it natural that they would pee on you?" she asked lightly, but clearly defending her babies.
The old man laughed. "All right, all right, enough chit chat about toilet habits of the royal children of the Emerald Kingdom," he said. He turned to look at Bella. "And who is this fine young lady? Little Mana should not have grown this much, right?" he asked curiously.
"That is Crown Princess Isabel of the Sapphire Kingdom, and she is betrothed to Jules," Queen Dora said.
Bella, too, greeted the old man politely, just like Jules.
"Ah, so you are daughter of Carolina and Vir, are you?" Zed murmured. "I should have known it from your beautiful face. You are planning to marry Jules?"
Bella nodded.
"Soulmates, eh? Good, good," Zed muttered. "I suppose you all are here to ask about Vir?"
"Yes," Bella said. "The cursed living ghost corpse that escaped from the imperial palace of the Sapphire Kingdom and left Queen Dora there instead, wrapped in curses."
Zed sighed and shook his head. "That wasn't Vir's doing," he said. "I pulled him out of the imperial palace using a transportation array, and I put Dora in the room of her husband when I realised the power of the rainbow net that was holding Vir captive. Where did you guys get that net, by the way? Which ancient master made it?" he asked curiously. "Vir is still tied up in that net and I can't break it at all. It is very powerful magic."
"Mommy and Daddy and Azar made the rainbow net together," the little black dragon spoke up proudly.
Zed blinked at Queen Dora in surprise. "You made that rainbow net with Jaren and the little dragon?" he asked, confused. "How is that possible? You were lying in a coma here at the time when Vir was captured by the net, so…"
"Not Grandmama and Grandpapa," Azar said impatiently. "Mommy and Daddy!"
Queen Dora laughed. "Azar's Mommy and Daddy are little Mana and Prince Raven of the Obsidian Kingdom," she informed her master.
Zed frowned. "Is he the child with incomplete magic that the Pearl Kingdom wanted to kill off as soon as he was born?" he asked.
"Yes, but right now, they are all falling over themselves to get him to look at them in favourable light," King Jaren said immediately – clearly very protective of the boy.
"And your little Mana is engaged to this child?" Zed asked, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "But his magic is incomplete, isn't it? Mana's magic should be decently powerful by now, right?" And then without waiting for anyone to speak, he continued his monologue, "But no matter how powerful little Mana's magic is – how could it be so powerful as to make up for the incomplete magic of this child…"
"Raven's magic is not incomplete," Jules said firmly. "He is very smart and very talented and very powerful."
Zed was stunned. "The boy's magic completed itself? How?" he cried excitedly. "Does he have two elements like you, Dora? I see that your son also has two elements – could it be that Mana also has two different types of magic and she gave one to this boy to complete his magic?" he demanded.
King Jaren shook his head. "Raven would never allow that, even if Mana wanted to do it," he stated. "Raven's magic grew and fixed itself."
Zed narrowed his eye. "That would only be possible if they are fated soul mates," he said seriously, looking at Queen Dora. "Are they?" he asked.
Queen Dora nodded.
Zed sighed. "Why didn't you bring them here, Dora? I would like to meet Mana and this Raven of hers. I need to figure out a way to remove the rainbow net from Vir.. There are certain things only he can help me with, so it is necessary that I speak with this child."
