"It's dark. I'm cold. Where am I?"

Thirteen year old Cindy was in a state of confusion as she heard the faint sounds of ambulances in the distance. Fading in and out of consciousness, she heard a man saying:

"Everything will be okay, stay with us."

Her consciousness slowly but surely faded out, not knowing if she would ever wake up.

- Five days later

"So, you're finally awake I see"

The young half elf had awakened inside a hospital room, greeted by a young nurse in her mid twenties. Cindy's parents were nowhere to be seen. As she slowly came to, the first thing she noticed was that her right arm was no longer attached to her body.

"My arm." Cindy said quietly, gripping what she had left of her severed limb.

"W-what happened? Where are my mother and father?!"

The young nurse looked at Cindy grimly, not knowing what to say. The silence in the air lasted for all but five seconds, but it felt like an eternity for the confused girl; until finally, the words that left the nurses' mouth rendered Cindy unconscious once more.

"Ms. Matthews... I'm sorry but, your mother....she's passed away."

-Two days later

"Huh, what happened? Where am I?"

As Cindy regained consciousness, she remembered what the young nurse said.

"Oh, that's right. My mother is...she's gone."

Cindy, all alone in her quiet hospital room, could do nothing but gaze out of the window with a look of melancholy upon her face. Her mother was gone. The mother that sang her to sleep every night until the age of seven. The mother that would play video games with her every day. The mother that would chase her bullies away, that would pick on her for being a half elf. Cindy's life as she knew it, was over.

"How? How did this happen? I don't understand..."

Small tears started to swell up on the young girls face, but before she could even come to terms with her mother's passing, she looked down at what should've been her severed right arm; but instead of a severed arm, she was shocked to see a prosthetic arm of steel attached to her body.

An hour passed by until the nurse came in.

"So, your mother passed away in a car accident. We were not able to save her... I'm so sorry.", the nurse said in an empathetic tone.

Cindy suddenly remembered. They were on their way to pick up a new game from the store.

Cindy: And do you know... where my father is?

Nurse: No, I'm sorry. He's nowhere to be found

Cindy: I see. That's okay. Haven't heard from him in years anyway. W-what about my mothers parents?

Nurse: Well, your grandfather did pay for the services on your new right arm, but he left soon after. The last thing he said before he left was:

"Tell that damn half-ling she's on her own from now on. We will be burying her mother on our residence. Do not step foot on our property. We will be selling the house that we bought for your mother as well. Now that our dear Abigail is gone, there's no reason for us to support a disgrace to the Elven race such as yourself. Consider that right arm of yours the last favor you will get from us.", the nurse said uncomfortably.

Nurse: I'm so sorry. We will try our best to find you foster care while you recover.

Cindy just sat there, with a wry smile on her face. she knew this would be the outcome if something like this were to happen one day. She didn't know any of her father's family members. Her mother's family would always look at her in disdain for being a half-ling. She knew that they would only support her if her mother was around. The brown haired youth was all alone in this world now, with nowhere to call home.

"It's okay.", said Cindy to her nurse with a faint smile still on her face. "I'll be just fine on my own."

Not fully recovered yet, she lifted herself up slowly from the bed. She changed clothes, gathered what little belongings she had, and walked out of that cold room, in search of a home.
