Chapter 12: The Debut

On the third day of the festival, in the evening schedule of the 6:30 pm batch, Sunny got an opening for their film.

The lead actors, Keanu and Tea were already here but Keanu was busy promoting his second film, 'My Private Idhao' a gay-themed movie which has won unanimous approval from all media critics and movie fans.

The gay theme is handled delicately and it is more of a romance movie than anything. It appeals to emotions and the bright coloured shots along with the rich colour tone of the movie just highlight more of its charms.

This is the power of colour tones used in movies that many are unconsciously affected with and resonate with while watching the movie.

There is no red carpet or any inaugural that is planned but Sunny has used a lot of his time to create a buzz around the movie. From some props placed in random locations to generate a spooky effect to placing posters directly in washrooms, many underhand and not-so-glamorous tricks were used.

Thankfully, no one has raised any objection to these tricks.

"Are you excited?" Sofia asked Sunny who came dressed in proper gentleman attire. With a Blackberry suit that is customized to match his body perfectly, Sunny looks more appealing to Sofia tonight.

"Of course. This is my first movie. My first step toward my goals. How can I be not excited?!" Sunny replied and offered his hand to Sofia who took it with a smile and they both entered the cinema hall on time.

Tea came with her agent and even her parents joined her. Keanu came with his co-actor and friend River Phoenix and that bought a lot of attention to their small movie.

Many small distributors and the ones from eight big houses in Hollywood were already aware of the debut of Sofia as a director and their agents were already sitting in their place. Everyone was waiting for the movie and waiting to see if Sofia Coppola is a worse actor or a worse director.

"There are a lot of people here." Sunny whispered in Sofia's ears.

"Keanu and River's fans. They won a lot of fans this time. Besides, the people in the front row are distributors and I can recognise a few of them." Sofia whispered back.

"Hopefully, everything will be fine." Sunny prayed and the hall went dark. With the lights fading, everyone stopped talking and focused on the big screen in front.

The opening was simple with a simple logo of Vision studios and there was a voiceover in the beginning to explain the movie setting. The scene then changed to pretty boy Keanu who has a slightly serious look on his face and the scenes kept changing.

The movie progressed in a fast rhythm and the sense of mystery and the disaster shots kept the audience hooked to their seats.

"Not bad," One of the executives from a distribution company called Dimension Films. It is a subsidiary under Miramax that is mainly responsible for distributing horror films and other films deemed "disreputable" for release under the Miramax title.

The movie was already near half-time and only a few people left the theatre. This shows that the fast-paced story, the horror and suspense atmosphere and a few large shots of those monsters managed to attract a large number of audiences.

Similar thoughts popped up in many other executives and one of them was from Fangoria Films. This was a small-scale production company that was just established in 1990 and till now, they have produced three movies.

Fangoria was financially struggling and it was near impossible to keep the studio profitable. The owners were looking for making a profit and the idea to jump into distribution also came from this.

They had done their film distribution independently and thus had a good experience and confidence in the distribution of films in the US and Canadian markets.

"AAAHHH!" A girl suddenly screamed in the last row when the tentacle monster suddenly appeared on the screen and maybe her boyfriend or friend sitting near startled her.

Sunny felt confidence exploding inside him with this scream. No amount of publicity can match this single scream and this live reaction from a movie audience will definitely attract more distributors for the movie.

There is no intermission in Hollywood cinemas anymore unless it is too long and because their movie was 90 minutes long only, the whole screening ended from beginning to end. The movie at the end had a fiery kissing scene between Keanu and Tea and people felt this was almost the 'cliche' ending of Hollywood where the actors must survive everything and fall in love.

However, before the credit could roll up, they saw as the lead actors were escorted back via the military jeeps, they were attacked by the large-scale monster and the movie ended up abruptly.

"Shit" "What happened" "Did they die in end?" Many small whispers could be heard in the theatre.

However, they soon head another voiceover at the end that was added by Sunny in the final cut.

"Good story, passable visuals and a good ending. Plus, the scope of shooting a sequel." One of the executives of a distribution company felt this was a must-grab for him. Not only this film was good, but if they can win the copyright, they can also produce a better sequel themselves.

The movie ended, the lights lit up slowly and the audience clapped with good enthusiasm. Sunny and Sofia looked at each other and felt, that the response was much better than their expectation.

Tea, the actress in the movie was already crying. Her parents were proud of their daughter's work and the loud clapping was like a medal for her hard work. The director, Sofia along with Crew had 15 minutes of time to interact with the audience and answer some media questions.

However, Sunny refused to go with her on stage and looked carefully at the global distributors who were sitting in the front rows.
