Chapter 13: Carloco Pictures

There were many executives from famous studios present inside the theatre and one of the belonged to TriStar pictures. In the 1990s, this was a famous name in Hollywood. Popular movies like Total Recall, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Basic Instinct made by Carloco pictures were distributed by Tri-Star in US and Canada markets.

However, this year their partnership is coming to a close as Carloco is financially strapped and unable to produce their films. They have a lot of openings and to match last year's revenue, they need many films to match the gap.

TriStar is already hoping to close deals that are in process with many different production houses but so far they are in 'talks'. Hence finding unknown films with good content and marketable content was the key for them.

He, Bruce Spinksky, decided to call the seniors to have a talk about this movie. After all, there are many in competition and the film will definitely not lack in finding good distributors.

Meanwhile, Sofia and Keanu along with Tea were sharing their experience, their insights and answering many questions from the media and fans. Sunny met executives from Miramax but he politely declined any cooperation.

He simply said that they wanted to distribute this film independently and were not focused on any profit. He just wanted to attract attention and hope for funding in future filming.

The excuse was such straightforward and so logically sound that the executive had no chance to refute or play any games. Similar things happened to most of the US-Canada distributors and hence the word spread that they were looking for global distributors.

When the 15-minutes of fame were up, the cast left the theatre and Sofia found Sunny talking to some German guy and she waited until the conversation was over. When the man left Sunny alone, she moved closer to him.

"Ahem! Are you done with your work?" She asked with a bright smile.

Sunny knew the woman was dancing on the clouds at this moment. The failure and shame of winning the Razzies were gone and the joy reflected her success in her debut directional movie.

"Almost. Rest will take time. Maybe a week or two. Let's go grab something to eat." Sunny offered his hand and Sofia joined him.

The pair of young people who finally became 'successful' were in good spirits and they went on a tasting spree across many local food stalls that were put here. Tasting local delicacies and meeting new people, they finally went back to the hotel room and spent a passionate night together.

The next day, it was almost noon when Sunny woke up. He drank too much and slept almost around 4 in the morning. The tension and pressure of success were finally gone and he thus slept peacefully today.

When he woke up, he noticed Sofia was already gone and there was a note on the table.

"Call from Constantin Films", the note had only four words on it but it made Sunny smile more. Constantin Films were a major group in Germany and he had a favourable talk with their executive.

Sunny freshen up and called for breakfast from the hotel before calling the German distribution agent. In the meantime, Sofia was also approached by a few agents who were keen on getting the US-Canada distribution rights but she clearly told them that she was only a director and Sunny, the owner of the production house wanted to do things in his own way.

Sunny was first ecstatic about finding these region-specific distributors but things went downhill very soon. Almost, all major Hollywood studios had global subsidiaries or were major shareholders and thus, you can never avoid them.

In the end, the dreams of independently distributing the movie became a joke and Sunny had to list all potential partners on a large whiteboard.

After discussion repeatedly and finally touching the bottom line of these major distributors, he finally chose one - RKO.

This is a dying major studio which will soon dissolve in the river of time but it still has enough weight in the film distribution circle. They offered the most generous rights with a 70:30 ratio meaning they wanted to own 30% of global and US-Canada profits and 60:40 in VHS tape sales.

This was already the most favourable and legally flexible deal Sunny could secure after losing patience with independent distributors.

The contract was finally signed in the next week and Sunny finally found global distribution for his first film. However, this deal left a poor taste in his mouth and he decided to build his studio staff urgently and develop their own distribution channel in the next 8 years.

"Only 8 years to fight and climb to a position where I can survive!" Sighing he picked up his drink and finished it in one go.

RKO executive called their head group in and decided to watch the movie to discuss the marketing plan for this movie. They were very happy in winning even this small movie as they somehow defeated their rivals - PolyGram.

Sadly, they had no idea that PolyGram had no interested in this low-budget sci-fi movie and never even had a chat with Sunny.

"Hey Sunny, I found a major news!" Sofia who entered the room was in good mood these days and often spent time with the new circle of film directors and producers.

"What is the major news now?" Sunny asked curiously.

" You know Carloco pictures, right? Word is they are almost ready to declare bankruptcy and looking for new investors. However, before they could even find new investors, many producers and executives from Carloco had already put in their papers and looking for a new place.

TriStar wanted to renew their deal in distribution but Carloco pictures have no money to focus on completing their movie and with so many people walking out of their group, it is simply chaos inside." Sofia giggled in sharing the story.

For her, this was just juicy gossip but Sunny's eyes lit up. Carloco...Carloco.....
