Chapter 22: Clash with Miramax

Sundance film continued and Sunny went from one theatre to another and met many famous stars and future Hollywood celebrities.

However, he didn't recognise many producers or directors that might be successful in future and could only blame himself for following movie stars and not the real people behind the scenes.

"Sir, there is a very tough competition in the movie, Reservoir Dogs. It's audience favourite and there are currently more than five companies competing for it."

On the fourth day of the Festival, Sunny received the latest report from the executives.

"Don't worry about it for now. I will personally handle this matter. Any other movie which we have selected so far?" Sunny asked.

"Sir, we already got three movies –

1)    Proof by Jocelyn Moorhouse, a female director, debut movie. Price is 2 million for global rights and it's a one-time buyout.

2)    In the Soup by  Alexandre Rockwell. This is his fourth film, and we only have the USA and Canadian rights for distribution. The buyout price is only 1 million Dollars because it has a strong taste in art cinema.

3)    Gas Food Lodging by Allison Anders, second movie. We have global rights for this and the price was 2 Million dollars."

After Sunny nodded and checked the movie's details, he was sure these movies won't lose money or at least overall he will make a profit. Movies are good and Home and cable rights will bring him a good profit until the festival season lasts.

"Good Work. Any big problem till now?" Sunny asked curiously while he picked his after-dinner Cigar.

"Nothing much sir just some competition but Miramax guys hyped the price for Johnny Suede and bought it privately. We never even got a chance to make an offer for that," One of the older guys said.

"Miramax…." Muttering to himself, Sunny took a deep puff.

He knows better than anyone here how big Miramax will grow in future. Oscars will become their back garden; actresses will tattoo the name of Harvey Weinstein on their bodies and people will thank him more than God during Oscar.

The name will be a strong power symbol and even will force Disney to protect its legacy against all odds before the #Metoo movement began.

"We can't avoid Miramax or Roadshow Entertainment or Cineville. We are all small fishes trying to each other and become bigger. Remember everyone, we are not afraid of anyone, and we will do our work honestly.

However, we are in Hollywood, and you have my support to do things you should. Just take permission from me before you act."

Sunny gave the final advice and left the meeting.

Tomorrow he is going to meet Quentin for breakfast, and he is sure this is Quentin trying to check if he can fulfil his big promises.

In the morning, Sunny walked to the local Restro and Bar for the meeting with Quentin and found someone else sitting with him. Someone he just talked about last night and he had no plans to clash so early in his life.

"Hey Sunny, here," Quentin called him in his usual loud style and Sunny shook his head and joined their table.

"I think you must know each other. I am sorry Mr Weinstein as I said, I came for a meeting with my friend here." Quentin politely spoke to Harvey who just nodded.

Even now one saw can see the proud and arrogant expressions on Harvey's face.

"Hello, Sunny Rover, right? Owner of new Rover pictures. Spent almost 30 million in establishing your studio but haven't produced or distributed any movie yet." Harvey just summarised the information about Rover's picture in two sentences and showed his dominance over the conversation.

"The key word being 'YET' Mr Harvey. Besides, I am young and stupid. I have already asked my people to buy any movie they want but the old guys are very picky, you know. Always act like snobby old experts and are so slow.

Thankfully we did get a few movies at this festival. So, don't worry. My Rover pictures is just gearing up for the long run."

Sunny simply pushed back with a smile and didn't show any pressure in presence of Harvey. The future giant Miramax is still in the infancy phase, and he can very well put up a fight.

"True… Sometimes, A man must be bold when making decisions. I take my leave, Quentin. Think about my offer." Harvey said before leaving. He completely ignored Sunny from the beginning. He only came for this director and liked the violence in his movie.

Sex and Violence are two things Americans hate to see on screen but also love to see on screen and the kind of violence Quentin had must have a market in the audience.

"You know, that guy's Miramax is going to join Disney by next year." Quentin threw a bomb in the conversation turning Sunny's mood sour.

Yes, he forgot that Miramax rose from a no-name distribution company to a mini-major studio because of the backing of the Disney brand and channels. He can fight with Miramax right now but with Disney?

It won't take much from Disney to wipe out his company in less than a few months without even breaking a sweat. Disney is one of the giants of Hollywood.

"Didn't know that. But it still doesn't scare me much. Your style and your movies are completely unrestrained and your movies won't enjoy support from the Disney label. Maybe Miramax will get to use Disney distribution channels and other resources but in that way, you will always have a low profit, will always be a small-time director."

Sunny analysed the situation for Quentin and the more he spoke, the more confident he became in winning Quentin Tarantino.

"Sure enough. I thought the same man!" Quentin laughed.

Both guys didn't talk about their contract or any other purpose and begin discussing movies that were showcased here and finished their breakfast.

Sunny wanted to chat with Quentin more but then Quentin's agent who has been sitting at a different table and observing the situation from far joined them.

"Hello, sorry to interrupt you guys, but Quentin you have a meeting with Cineville in half hour." The agent said politely but it brought the guys back to their main purpose.

"Quentin, tell me the best offer you want. What deal do you want for this movie? What will it take to sign a six-movie or five-movie contract with you?" Sunny finally said in a serious tone and his agent was surprised inside.

'Six-film contract? When did this Quentin become so famous that he can get such kind of contract?' His agent kept thinking and before Quentin could speak, he jumped in.

"Mr Sunny, It's quite clear that my client, Quentin Tarantino made the best movie here in Sundance. Its popularity is the highest with the audience and there were long lines to watch his movie. I hope we can keep this point in focus while discussing the contract."

"Quentin, discuss with your agent. Tell me your terms and I think until there is a big issue, we can close a deal and form a long-term partnership." Sunny knew the agent was going to disrupt his rhythm and will make Quentin think more deeply about contract terms.

But this is life. Everyone wants the best for themselves. Sunny is doing the same. He can't fault Quentin for doing the same.
