On the last day of the festival, Quentin Tarantino signed the contract with Rover Pictures and sold his first movie for 3 Million in total; which was already a profit for Quentin as he shot the movie on a low 1.3 Million budget.
So, Quentin earned 1.7 Million by selling his first movie and Rover Pictures won the copyright. However, Quentin didn't want to sign a long-term movie deal at this stage. He wanted to first check conditions with different companies and take a break from filming before preparing for his next project.
Sunny could only wait for Quentin's response but at least he now had a good relationship with him. In this industry, sometimes initial relationships go a long way.
"John, you are the most senior person in the distribution department. Tell me, how do you think we should sell this Reservoir Dogs?"
Sunny asked his senior executive in the distribution department for advice.
"Sir, If I am being honest here, this movie will be an R-rated movie and will only attract a tiny branch of the audience. It's hard to make a profit. If we try to release it in a large number of cinemas, theatres won't agree with it.
So, we can only do a limited release, spread the word of mouth, focus on the awards and then attract the audience to the theatres.
Otherwise, we might lose money on this."
John spoke after finishing his cigarette.
"Okay. Let's do that. But just add one more point in the promotion. This movie is for Men and not for boys.
Remember that. Not for boys but for real Men."
Sunny gave John an idea about this movie promotion but was unsure if it would work. However, human psychology is like this. All boys want to be 'Real Men' and all adults must prove that they are 'Real Men'.
No one has any clear idea about 'Real Men' and it all changes with time. But the concept of 'Men vs Boys' will remain forever.
"Good idea Sir. We can try." John agreed with the concept. He is an old Hollywood guy who understood the idea's meaning easily.
Similarly, other contracts with other directors were also signed and Rover pictures selected four movies for their US and Global release.
Reservoir Dogs, Proof, In the Soup and Gas Food Lodging. Only these four movies were finally approved by Sunny and the executives after a long debate over all the other movies.
They also promoted their studio extensively and spent good money on these movies and self-promotion.
"I am going back to Japan to check with our animation team. You guys take our movies to other festivals and do your thing. I want these movies to release after the Summer. We can't fight the big guns but we should make sure that we have enough weight when we start the promotions."
Sunny told John and John that they are planning to take these movies to other film festivals and try to win some awards. So, Sunny handed over the rest of the work to these guys and left back for Japan.
In the 1990s, many hand-drawn animations were imported from Japan as they had cheap and good-quality animation videos. All you need to dub and cut out any culturally inappropriate scenes and you get good animation movies.
When Sunny came out of the airport, he saw Mr Wagner. Wagner is a 40-something German who was poached from Celebrity Home Entertainment. This guy is responsible for selecting the best possible work from Japan every year and helping it distribute in US and Canada.
"Sir, Welcome to Japan." Wagner enthusiastically welcomed his new boss. He has been here for the last 1 month and he was already done with his work. Or so he thought.
"Let's go, Mr Wagner. I need some nice food with beer before I can focus on work." Sunny joked and together they both went directly to the famous Imperial Hotel in Tokyo.
In the evening, Sunny sat with Wagner and together checked all the animation work samples Wagner has collected. However, he was truly not impressed with these works.

There is Doraemon movie, Dragon ball movie and other movies based on manga books but seriously, these are not something that can bring a large profit or something that could be exploited for a long time.
Sunny thought carefully and felt instead of bringing these things, it might be better to buy an animation studio here to make movies and TV series for the American audience. That can actually be a profitable business.
"Mr Wagner, these are good. No doubt. But you have to understand, that people in Japan understand and relate to these animation movies because of the large popularity of their manga here.
Can you really think American boys and girls will feel the same enthusiasm for these movies? Besides, even if we win these after bidding a high price, our profit margin would be too low to make any money.
Let's do one thing. Can you find small or medium animation studios that are looking for investors or are in financial trouble? We might simply buy one and make them create something that can actually suit our audience." Sunny said while drinking the famous Sake.
"But Sir, it will take a long time for them to make anything and then we would not be able to release any animation work this year." Mr Wagner felt it would be truly a waste to let these movies go out of their hands.
"We need to think of a long-term plan Mr Wagner. This importing work from Japan every year to fill our own library won't work for long. One day, these studios will try to release their own English dubbed version of their work and cut us out.
Besides, compared to the US, the cost of hiring a Japanese animation studio is rather cheap. Please trust me on this." Sunny clarified his thoughts and sent the German guy away.
In the night, Mr Wagner took Sunny to a local Hot Spring hotel and Sunny truly felt the satisfaction of taking a dip in the hot spring. The perfectly hot water for relaxing muscles, the open air environment and there are even massaging ladies to provide Nuru Massage to the clients.
Sunny truly enjoyed a blissful night and truly appreciated the local beauty in Japan.
The next morning, Sunny and Wagner had a meeting with four different mini studio owners and anime directors.
"Again, why are these studios so hell-bent on making historical movies?" Sunny threw another studio's proposed plans in the dustbin after just reading the main synopsis.
All four studios were somehow sure that they can make and sell anime based on history and make a huge profit. No wonder, they are going bankrupt.
"Is there no one else, someone making different kinds of animation movies?" Sunny asked Wagner in frustration.
"Sir, there might be one but I am not sure about that. Studio Ghibli - a collaboration between Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki. These three are somewhat giants in the anime department but they are not happy with their current global distributors." Wagner said very slowly stressing the keyword - current very much.
"Who is their current global distributor?" Sunny excitedly asked after hearing this legendary name that he somehow forgot.
"Disney!" Wagner said with a silly smile.
"Fuck me!" Sunny blurted out.
"Fuck Fuck Fuck.... What the Fuck....Disney....What kind of this...Fuck..." Sunny after shouting for few minutes calmed down and then went back straight to Wagner.
"Call them. Fix a meeting with Studio Ghibli. Let them know they can choose to work with us and we will be their best partners in this industry.
Disney... Fuck it!"
Sunny said with great resolve. This is Studio Ghibli before its explosion. Even with just their global distribution rights, he can make millions of dollars from profit alone.
