Chapter 26: Fast and Furious

Sunny came back to his studio and called for a meeting with screenwriters and producers to think about this Car racing movie. When everyone came and joined Sunny in the small meeting room, Sunny felt proud to see a team of more than 20 people in his studio for this kind of work.

"Everyone, we have started distributing and producing our own movies this year. There are a few movies from Sundance that we are still showcasing at different film festivals and an animation studio working on a new story in Japan.

Now, it's for time to start our live-action movie. I feel, that within a limited budget, we should focus on a car racing theme.

I have a very rough idea in my head. Underground, Street racing teams compete with each other to win a big order for smuggling goods across the border. Police jump in to stop them but they ignore the law enforcement agencies and fight to win the car race at all costs.

The cars are heavily modified to give the drivers an edge over others and there are car chases, car crashes and women to highlight their style of life.

Now, screenwriters must think collectively to come up with this script. Make the script like a young man who is living like a family with his adopted brothers and sisters, creating his own team to win this race to win big money and find a way out of poverty for them.

An underground cop joins his team to find the truth about the race and its motive and somehow wins the trust of this car racer and joins his team and family. Make a love angle with the adopted sister.

Finally, the truth is that the goods they have to smuggle are drugs, across the Mexico-US border and at the last minute, both the guys fight their way out, steal the money from Drug traffickers and expose the ring for Cops effectively shutting them off.

However, the cop can't let this racer guy take the stolen money and his bosses told him to arrest this guy but he lets him go as a personal choice and thus establishes the final scene of brotherhood and family bonding."

Sunny thought of the Need for Speed game and the Fast and Furious franchise and somehow came up with a story that can be shot in this time period.

The concept of family and brotherhood is universal and it will be accepted by everyone. The idea of taking money to help his family live a better life will put the main lead in a good position with the audience. Hence he felt this story was much better and more compact than the original Fast and Furious movie.

The script team left with the storyline and only the production executives were left inside the meeting room.

"We need to set up a team for this. Producers, Directors and the whole set. Gary, you are the most senior person here. I give you and the whole team 1 month to come up with solid budgeting and shooting plans.

Choose the possible crew and the director and producer. People who got experience in shooting car movies or music videos. Cast a big net to find the best possible guys."

Don't think that shooting a car race movie in 1992 is a stupid move. The greatest car chase scene was actually filmed in 1974, in a movie called Gone in 60 seconds. The entire movie was produced and directed by the main lead -  H. B. Halicki.

Gone in 60 Seconds proved to be extremely successful at the box office, grossing $40,000,000 on a budget of $150,000. The best part - Halicki even did his own stunts and nearly died multiple times before completing this movie. This movie is known for having wrecked and destroyed 93 cars in a 40-minute car chase scene, one of the longest in film history.

Sadly, the great Halicki passed away shooting the sequel in 1989 and leaving his legacy behind.

The script writers begin working on many drafts and kept discussing with Sunny to decide on the lead actors' behaviour and style and the size of the crew he wanted. Besides, they needed to decide on extras, other scene ideas and importantly ethnicity of the actors involved in this movie.

The production executives went on a movie-watching spree and started contacting various agencies like CAA and WMA for the selection of a director and producer for this movie. Sunny was not interested in becoming part of the Hollywood crew anymore.

His goal was always to be the boss of everyone and not work for anyone. That was his life goal in this life.

K. Gary, the most senior production executive came to Sunny after a month with the possible list of directors, cinematographers, lead cameraman and other professionals.

"Gary, I see another Gary here. F. Gary Gary in director's possible choice. You are not favouring him because of his name right?" Sunny joked after going through the possible names.

"Sir, this is a young guy who is starting out in direction but he has filmed many music videos with Rap artists and all of them have good car sequences. He is cheap, methodological and is black.

Meaning we will have more control over him and he will give his 200% to succeed with this movie." Gary said after checking his notes.

Sunny nodded and agreed with the evaluation.

"Who else you would personally recommend?" Sunny asked.

"Rob Cohen, this guy got experience as a director and producer and he has worked on some good films. He has a keen sense of selecting actors and the production company he worked for - Keith Barish Productions, just closed its operations and is shut down for good."

Sunny circled this guy's name and then asked Gary to bring the works of these guys along with a few others to check their directional style.

Meanwhile, after a month, the script writing team also came up with a complete script that matched Sunny's vision and satisfied him.

Sunny took the VHS tapes of the possible directors and checked their work and he also could only select these two guys, F. Gary Gary and Rob Cohen.

(In real life, Rob Cohen shot the first Fast and Furious movie while F. Gary Gary shot the 8th Installment of the series.)
