"So," Jay said from on top of a cooling sheet metal awning, "when were you guys gonna introduce yourselves?"

The MPC agents consisted of one man and one woman, and they weren't prepared for Jay appearing above them even though they should've read his profile and the parts involving rooftops. They got easily startled.

That broke the flow of foot traffic moving to and fro through Junkside, which was livelier than Jay had expected. In good ways that came with the bad, of course.

The male agent bumped into a meaty man with a mean mug. Without giving the agent a chance to apologize, the junker grabbed him by the collar of his polo shirt and slammed him into a corrugated metal wall.

"Kleo," Jay called, "Power exploration starts now. Handle the big mean one."

"Yes, Master Jay," Kleo said, happy to serve.

Staying within his hoodie, Kleo directed her magic toward the junker accosting the male agent while the female agent started to draw a gun. Jay had full capacity 30 Intellect to guess foreigners firing a pistol at a Junker would set the local people off badly.

As Kleo used [Faerie's Voice] on the junker, Jay used his familiar's [Gravity Grasp] on the agent's gun.

The events that transpired didn't go as well as he'd hoped.

[Faerie's Voice (Faerie), Level 1]: Your Familiar charms a single target with telepathy if the target's magical defense, sentience, and/or sapience is permeable. Then the target falls under her influence for a limited duration and would follow simple orders. If the target resists fully, their Poise rises for a limited time. Variable mana costs from moderate to high depend on the target's magical defense. This Skill can only be performed by your Faerie. Leveling up increases Perception scaling and Skill effect duration.

That would've worked out perfectly on its own. Jay could feel Kleo's ultra-creepy telepathic Skill wrap around the junker's brain like tentacles around prey. All she needed was a moment to enthrall the junker fully.

But Jay used [Gravity Grasp] on the female agent dumbly.

[Gravity Grasp (Familiar), Level 1]: You and/or Kleo coat a target in magic aligned with your affinity. If the target can't resist, they'll fall in your direction and under your limited telekinetic influence. The power of the local gravity combined with your magical capacity and the target's dimensions are accountable factors. Variable mana costs range from small to high. The mana costs are higher for the Faerie Master. Leveling up improves your telekinetic prowess and increases Kleo's effectiveness and range.

Jay's initial idea was to yank the gun out of the agent's hand. It was a classic move from the comic books.

Spider-Man did it all the time, so why couldn't Jay?

Reality set in when the agent didn't release her weapon when a purple glow surrounded it. She got yanked toward Jay with her weapon, increasing the mana costs sharply. And she pulled the trigger, interrupting Jay's concentration on [Gravity Grasp] and some.

You've suffered -28 physical damage.

Jay winced from the loud crack of gunfire and the bullet hitting him on the right side of his chest. A sharp and hot flare of pain pulsated between the shoulder and his pectoral. But the supposedly horrid reality of getting shot stopped there, strangely.

The blood that should've pumped free came out in a polite trickle.

Nonetheless, the negligent fire removed Jay's concentration on [Gravity Grasp], which wasn't a simple Skill for him to use since it belonged to his familiar.

He still got rewarded for having used it several times so far.

Gravity Grasp leveled up to 2!

At the same time, Kleo lost focus on her part of this encounter. It would've been easy if she had a moment longer, but the sheer volume of noise from a pistol going off and her Master's sudden pain shocked her. All at once, Jay put the people on his side in an even more dangerous situation.

The junker went from angry to ballistic. No words. No mercy. He whirled around and slammed the male agent into the female. When the agents collapsed into a heap on the dirty ground, disorientated and surprised, the junker raised his boot to stomp them in their faces.

Kleo was faster on the draw, while Jay started to use his Conviction to get over the shock of being shot. The [Faerie] activated her Master's [Dance Floor Relativity], which was less effective for her. But one man without a system or magic was well within her range. His Poise-boost from the failed [Faerie's Voice] didn't offer much resistance.

She wriggled her hips as her mana cost mitigating dance, too, and had the man hurtled into the corrugated metal wall behind him. Instead of falling in the same direction, Kleo wrapped herself up in her Master's hair and held on while using a passive version of [Orbital Mastery].

She didn't have to if she used her Master's [Moonwalker] to slow her descent forward or a more active version of [Orbital Mastery].

[Orbital Mastery (Familiar), Level 10]: You and Kleo can passively or actively orbit each other or allies, places, and things you gravitate toward personally. Variable mana costs range from tiny to high. While Kleo is orbiting you, all gravity Skills have a small mana reduction base. When Kleo is orbiting an ally, their Magic Skills have a similar mana cost reduction base. Whenever Kleo uses her Master's Gravity Skills while orbiting her Master, the mana cost reduction is boosted considerably for her alone. While you're using this Skill, all mana cost reductions are removed, and the mana costs increase slightly. Leveling this Skill improves your orbital control and adds tiny mana reduction bonuses with Kleo.

The passive version was akin to Kleo being the moon to Jay's earth. The more active version had her using her gravity-thruster wings and [Orbital Mastery] to scoot around at her discretion. But using that actively costs Jay some mana, and part of this trip was learning to be creative and mindful of mana costs.

To his surprise and appreciation, Kleo stayed ready for more action. His little [Faerie] had the edge of a knife, thrilled to be used.

"Sling me, Master," Kleo requested, getting hyped.

"Nope," Jay said now that he found his composure again. He dropped down and punched the guy's lights out.

You've ended an encounter while exploring your powers!

"Could've ended this sooner, but the variety is good for experience," Jay said, rolling his right shoulder to feel out the injury. It wasn't that bad. It didn't compare to having his side sliced when he'd fought Murderous Mary.

"Master, I wanted to play," Kleo whined. "I feel so unused."

"Sorry, sorry," Jay said, reaching into his hood to pet and comfort Kleo. Clearly, the [Faerie] wanted all the smoke. But Jay was also mindful of his fuckup, the public awareness, and that other lives were on the line.

His 30 Intellect was nagging the hell out of him, too. But it wasn't completely faultless. Just because he had better Intellect didn't take away from his personality and current knowledge base. His logic was his Intellect's logic, too. At the very least, 30 Intellect vowed to remember this mistake.

And his Chance Status was hella low for some mysterious reason.

Statuses:

Health [372/400 HP]

Stamina [594/600 SP]

Mana [1064/1100 MP]

Chance [x1/x9]

It had dropped when he started walking into Junkside to reach the junkyard. He hadn't used [Eye of Venerated Madness's] more OP perks since he'd gotten here, either. The Chance drop hadn't come with a warning of danger and seemed to have happened naturally.

"Master," Kleo called, looking at his Statuses with him. "This place feels set against you. The story is not nice here."

Damn, he'd have to be more mindful of his actions, then. Having 1x Chance meant he was more prone toward bad plot outcomes because of System shenanigans.

His Discovery Attribute didn't necessarily mitigate unlucky outcomes, either. It enhanced the search and success of getting lucky or finding great opportunities to exploit. Conviction's duty was to help him run through bad stuff whenever it cropped up.

But having a low Chance was upsetting for Jay when considering the overall scheme of the System. They might've backed off and returned home if it was anyone else. YoAnna had a perfectly usable and safe facility for the Champions to train at her outer mansion.

But Jay felt like he was being challenged and wanted to see things through.

"Mister Luckrun, I'm so sorry," said the female agent.

She and her partner had just finished dusting themselves off and orienting themselves. She approached Jay while her partner stood guard. There were a lot of eyes on the trio now, and Jay could hear talk spreading as fast as gossip at school, which was ridiculously fast.

Jay poked at the black and slightly bloody hole in his sweater. "I've never been shot before."

The woman paled, horrified. She seemed like she was on the brink of tossing her gun away.

Jay gave the agent a smile, his heterochromia eyes shining mirthfully.

"Does it help me fit in with the Junkers? You can tell me the truth." When she didn't respond, Jay sighed. "I see. This is baby stuff. I gotta get shot more to really get a feel for the area."

He turned to the local onlookers crowding around a narrow alley.

"Do y'all think more bullet holes would make my sweater more Junkside appropriate?" he asked.

The junkers departed into the shadows and twisty routes.

"Huh, tough crowd," Jay said.

Kleo filled one of his ears with her snickers. Her bloodlust changed out for humor, which was the thing Jay was going for.

He could feel it in the metaphorical gravity way. This place was against his lighthearted nature. It wanted to bring him down. Jay refused to let himself get the edgy treatment.
