Jay sat with ten other Champions in a staff room Hailey had gotten for them. It was a large room usually reserved for faculty, but Hailey’s school political connections afforded them the best.
They had a big projector with an interactive screen. Living plants in the corner. Alabaster white walls with the school’s black and gold checkered across the carpet. The desk was a heavy oak painted white with the lion mascot at its center.
Pretty grand and over the top.
The Champions were chatting idly until the door opened and revealed a freshly showered Dennis after football practice. He looked apologetically toward everyone as he darted to the nearest chair.
Jay’s [Eye of Venerated Madness] glimmered for an update on his fellow member of Team FAAHI. The Call and Gather at lunch earlier wasn’t an appropriate time to use it.
Name: Dennis Miller, Rank 2 Class: [Starter Fighter, Level 12] Health: 620/620 Stamina: 820/820 Mana: 240/240 Chance: x3/x4 Noteworthy Info: This human shares an allegiance with you under the same Godling and Pantheon. No Affinity. Highest Attribute is 62 Strength. Most Signature Item is Ogre Hunter Colossal Curved Sword, Good. Most Pivotal Skill is [Aura of the Strong]. Most Particular Talent is [Ox Boon]. Most Unique Title is [Hero of Burden]. |
Nothing new there. Dennis was the strongest Champion, a badass [Fighter] with one of the coolest names for a pivotal Skill, and his Ox Boon did one simple thing well. Make the Strength Attribute even stronger. That was about it. The purity of that Talent would lead toDennis being the hardest physical hitter without using extra powers. His new Title was interesting. What did [Hero of Burden] afford Dennis?
“Ugh, so is that the creepy feeling everyone gets from Jay’s left eye?” Dennis asked with a shiver.
“Almost done now. I need to update one and add another,” Jay admitted, glancing at Lilith.
“Go ahead,” his friend agreed.
Name: Lilith Hernandez, Rank 2 Class: [Apprentice Crafter, Level 15] Health: 400/400 Stamina: 460/460 Mana: 810/800 Chance: 6x/6x Noteworthy Info: This human shares an allegiance with you under the same Godling and Pantheon. Her Affinity is Alchemy. Highest Attribute is 61 Intellect. Most Signature Item is Great Raticide Toxin. Most Pivotal Skill is [Apocalyptic Chemistry]. Most Particular Talent is [Snake Boon]. Most Unique Title is [Princess of Extermination]. |
No big changes here except for a level-up and additional Attributes. She was still a scary magical teenager with an OP Affinity that could mass murder monsters and men. At least he got her updated.
Jay leered at Hailey next.
The second hottest sister of the Divine Four, holder of the Event Planner school position, and owner of the nickname Third Nerd stuck out a hip and gave Jay an amused look. Jay would’ve called her bewitching if she wasn’t practicing to be an actual witch.
She was cascading dark brown hair that fell in tresses to the top of her hip. She was more pear-shaped compared to the other Divines, with a lower body that stuck out dynamically. And she dressed like a mature vixen with dark autumn colors of mottling greens, browns, oranges, or maroon depending on her mood and dress choice of the day. Today was a burgundy gown that added to the maturity of her overall appearance. She had mysterious, dark, and adventurous written all over her. The last thing she was missing to complete her look was a glass filled with dark wine to plaster her dark red lipstick along the edges.
Name: Hailey Manning, Rank 2 Class: [Initiate Mage, Level 12] Health: 380/380 Stamina: 240/240 Mana: 1000/1000 Chance: x4/x4 Noteworthy Info: This human shares an allegiance with you under the same Godling and Pantheon. No Affinity. Highest Attributes are 50 Perception and 50 Intellect. Most Signature Item is Broom of Aspiring Nightriders, Good. Most Pivotal Skill is [Illusive Mistress]. Most Particular Talent is [Crow Boon]. Most Unique Title is [Lady of Trickery]. |
It was almost worrying how low Hailey’s Health and Stamina Statuses were. But then Jay regarded her Mana Status standing at 1000, calculated her estimated AP, and came to a conclusion she was heavily invested in her magic. And that made sense. She seemed to be a [Mage] that pumped out Spells in more volume and for longer durations than Mike.
Having an even split between Perception and Intellect was an interesting build choice. Jay wondered if she could perceive magic more naturally. That could give her more room to play with when enchanting even though Mike had the Skills to actually shape and push mana.
She was also more specialized even though she didn’t have an Affinity yet. Misleading illusions. Detrimental curses. A Title called [Lady of Trickery] that would certainly make her harder to pin down for her foes.
And then there was [Crow Boon], an enhancer of malicious magic, a booster of Intellect and Perception, and a gradual Conviction raiser when surrounded by death. She was a fitting partner for Emily while the Death [Medium] existed in Hailey’s shadow.
With that, Jay finally achieved a complete set of the most recent mini-profiles.
Chance x7 rose to Chance x8 for some reason. Maybe his increased understanding of his fellow Champions was good for the school arc narrative.
“What else can that eye do than make me shiver, Jay?” Hailey asked with an innocent tone.
“Stop that,” Frank said. “Why are the mean girls flirting with Jay so hard?”
“Jealous, papi?” Jay asked.
Frank narrowed his eyes.
“How high are we?” Frank asked, looking out the window.
"Five stories," Mike answered. "That used to be a workout before the changes."
“Uh-huh. Is that window stormproof?” Frank asked. "Would it make it difficult to throw out the trash?"
“Yeah. It would make it hard to throw out Jay, too, if that's what you're thinking,” Dennis said.
“I don’t want it to be easy,” Frank said darkly.
Jay shrank into his seat and tried to disappear from the Dragon [Fighter’s] attention. Team Divine and Team Booty Bandits looked at Jay's team with expressions ranging from befuddlement to amusement.
“How about we focus on why we’re all here, maximizing our time rather than detracting from it,” Hailey said like someone familiar with corralling a bunch of crass, reckless, and difficult people. A future politician, this one.
Jay and the rest agreed anonymously. It was late into the evening, anyway. They had gone through a full school day after a night fighting assassins. Some Champions looked like they hadn’t slept in days even with their fully regenerated Statuses. There was a level of weariness that transcended the Stamina Status.
“Nicknames, no nicknames?” Hailey asked Lilith.
“Keep it simple, just names,” Lilith said, which meant they’d drop their high school nicknames as First Nerd and such.
Frank leaned over to Jay. “You all take the nickname stuff seriously.”
Jay tried not to smile at Frank acting like a real transfer student–a new guy out of his element. The [Freak] nodded sagely instead. “Ever since YoAnna showed up the tenth-grade year, things became a lot more–”
“Dramatic," Hailey cut in, reining their attention back to her as she stood beside the projector screen. "Dare I say, fantastical, too? It's always been there since ninth grade. It became more prominent when YoAnna arrived."
Hailey held a remote and looked ready to start the meeting officially.
Lilith shot her hand up like a good student.

“Yes, Lilith?” Hailey called.
“Ears,” Lilith said. “Walls.”
Hailey nodded. She sauntered back to the table, set the remote down, and rifled through her school bag. She pulled out her bag of holding and withdrew a large quill with a dark feather. She searched through her backpack again before pulling out sheets of parchment.
[Identifying]: Spell Holding Parchment, Basic–Used to hold magic runes and circles that would normally fade and deteriorate mundane writing paper.
Hailey read magic instructions from the parchment and etched a diagram with symbols over the nearest wall. She created a ritual that floated in the air inches from the surface. Each stroke of her Ritual Stencil left glowing blue marks.
“Brit,” Lilith called. “Secure campsite.”
The Holy [Medium] got to her feet immediately. She knelt in the open space in front of the projector screen and started reciting an incantation quietly to herself. She performed the incantation fast, too.
“[Ritual Worker],” Hailey said, her voice resonating with the power of a Skill. The magical circle and runes she had etched above the wall multiplied into four hovering ritual circles. She directed one to every other wall.
“Silent Room,” Hailey cast, triggering the spell in the ritual circles.
“Respite of Security,” Brit said, finishing her incantation.
Spellcraft and incantation workings lapped over each other, overlaying powers that magicked and blessed the room.
Jay could perceive the magical discipline through his sense of touch when the air thrummed with active mana. He could still hear things outside even if the outside world was barred from listening in.
He also felt comforted and secured thanks to the other discipline of magic. Or was it more appropriate to call it a miracle? He felt deep inside that none may spy on him if he needed to speak in confidence with the others. It was a spiritual understanding.
Dennis gawked at Lilith as if she was a mastermind. “If we had to choose a number one leader, it’ll be you, wouldn’t it, Lilith?”
Casey and Frank shifted uncomfortably.
“No,” Lilith said. “It can’t be me.”
“Why?” Dennis asked.
“I lack the needed empathy,” Lilith said. “It must be someone with a necessary level of empathy. That’s why it’s a good idea that Brit is superior to me in Team Booty Bandits.”
Rick and Tim nodded in agreement.
Brit flashed an uneasy but thankful smile from having her fellow team members’ support. She moved back to her seat as Hailey took center stage once again.
“Quick note, Casey will make for a good Champion Leader,” Hailey said. “She’s hard, I get that, but she’ll get the job done.”
Jay didn’t doubt that. They called her Captain Casey for leading the cheerleaders, various athletic programs, and a host of other activities. She was an excellent model of leadership even if Frank had more combative experience. If only she wasn’t such a harsh person to others outside of the Divine and YoAnna.
Hailey raised the remote again and flipped the projector from standby to active. A simple white document with a list of objectives filled the screen.
“Why am I up there?” Jay asked, feeling nervous.
“Lilith, Mike, and I talked extensively on what we could focus on this week,” Hailey said. “We’ve been running around and fighting nonstop until now. However long this breather lasts, we can use it to better unite the Champions.”
“As for your question, Jay,” Mike followed, “we can feel immense power coming from you. The change from when we parted Saturday to when we met up Sunday night is extreme. And that new eye has been quite the mystery.”
“I’ve held back from asking,” Emily piped up. “It disturbs me a little.”
“I like it,” Brit commented.
Jay breathed deeply. Having all of the Champions’ attention was not a light burden, especially on a matter that was personal and heavy. It didn’t feel right to talk about the Godling Dungeon without Kleo or YoAnna. In fact, Jay felt some bad ripples in the air, a dreaded premonition of warning and–
“Maybe we should cross that out,” Brit said with a frown. “Something doesn't feel right.”
“This is vital information,” Frank countered. “Why should it be kept from the rest of us?”
Mike and Lilith looked at Jay, reading him better than anyone else. They saw his discomfort, which worried Mike and exasperated Lilith. Together, Jay’s childhood friends expressed to the group they would look past the matter until Jay wanted to talk about it. The [Freak’s] appreciation for them was heartfelt.
Dennis, Rick, and Tim sided with Brit, Mike, and Lilith. They wouldn’t dig into Jay for why he was so much stronger as a Champion.
Team Divine held a neutral stance on the matter.
“I can’t agree to this,” Frank muttered. “We can talk about it later if you need time to sort it out. But it should be discussed, Jay. That eye ignores our [Obscurification], and it’s nothing anyone has seen before.”
“It is a matter,” Jay said softly, “that is personal between YoAnna and me.”
His words carried the weight of heavy gravity and Conviction that made the air ripple. Regardless of the plain and brutish nature of a [Fighter], Frank’s Conviction wasn’t up to snuff. At least in a conversation.
Frank started to look doubtful.
“If you wish to know,” Jay continued, hammering Frank some more, “it must be discussed with YoAnna present.”
Frank looked away angrily, his emotions growing heavy and stormy above him. Somewhere in there was a burning bonfire of pride that wanted to blaze a trail through Jay’s Conviction. Frank swallowed the draconic embers crackling in his mouth and held his bearing instead of burning bridges with the [Freak].
“Why did you have a personal matter with YoAnna?” Casey deadpanned.
Hm. Her Conviction was probably the highest among [Fighters]. And her [Knight of Perseverance] Title sounded like it would favor Conviction. She wasn’t easily swayed.
“Ask YoAnna when we see her again,” Jay said simply.
Casey looked like she was going to barrel forward with all of her might.
Hailey snapped her fingers and lit the air above their heads with sparkles, pops, and miniature fireworks. It was so sudden and unexpected it stunned Jay and the other Champions. It was also a dazzlingly clever tension breaker.
“Okay then!” Hailey said cheerily. “Let’s talk about dungeon crawls. Team Divine can start us off.”
“I can tell it,” Casey said. Jay wouldn’t mind. It would get Casey’s mind off the YoAnna situation. For now.
“Of course, you can, dear, but sometimes you cut out the good bits,” Hailey chided softly.
“Let me!” Macy cheered. “I’m in all the awesome parts.”
“But we can’t let our shining star tell the story when she should enjoy hearing it,” Hailey deflected.
“True,” Macy agreed. “I wanna hear my awesomeness from the best.”
Hailey’s eyes landed on Emily.
The Death [Medium] stood up like a beckoned wraith. She moved across the room, seeming to be more akin to a shadow than a person. Since they could let loose their magic here, her passing came across as chilly and dreadful.
Some of the [Fighters] with less Conviction shivered.
Jay slouched into his seat, feeling relieved. It didn’t matter if it was before or after they shared their dungeon crawl experiences, retelling the Godling Dungeon story and consequences would’ve been too much for him. And it just wasn’t right without YoAnna being here. How could he explain the scar that would forever ruin YoAnna’s beauty?
The Divine Four would rip him apart. And that was the last thing he wanted if he was going to embrace them positively somehow.
He was eager to sit back and hear the tales of the other teams. Emily was a good narrator, anyway. She’d retell her journalism club articles on the morning announcements sometimes. Her thriller style of narration would be favored by Jay’s mom, so this should be good.
If only Emily’s emotional gravity didn’t flair like a bomb moments before she opened her noir-colored lips. The empathetic warning didn’t prepare Jay for the words that followed.
“Before we start, I think I should put it out there that I might be a psychotic murderer,” Emily blurted, “and maybe I’m evil and shouldn’t be a Champion. Because I killed a regular man today with my Death powers, and that's evil, isn't it?”
Jay smacked his face and groaned.
The Champions couldn’t go a few hours without some serious drama rearing up, could they?
