Chapter 120: Chapter 103 – Kanae and Mitty

A month had passed since Bardell's defeat.

Although the Saint Priests hadn't returned with the Grand Eye's answer yet, the fact that Ehmvier saw trade and visitors from Lograin was evidence that they at least weren't enemies. Even adventurers came to do quests and fight high level monsters that were in no shortage of in the Commonwealth.

Kanae passed by the newly-built adventurer's hall, a two-story building that sat adjacent to the church. Not quite as grand as the one in Lograin, but it did serve as a testament to their growing city.

"Mama," Teana said, tugging on Kanae's hand. "School is starting soon!"

"Oh, sorry. I was just—"

"Kanae! Teana!" Shatiel emerged from the adventurer's hall and skipped down the steps.

Teana lit up like a torch and forgot all about school. She playfully threw herself into Shatiel's arms.

"Shatiel? Does that mean the others are here, too?" Kanae asked in surprise just as Talis, Clara, and Jannie came out to greet them.

"We arrived last night! After hearing rumors from other adventurers about this place, we just had to check it out. I can't believe this kingdom belongs to you!" Shatiel exclaimed.

"Well, it wasn't easy…" She chuckled uneasily to herself, recalling the many close calls along the way. "Do you guys plan to stay long?"

Talis nodded. "I think we will. The level range of monsters across no man's land— sorry, the Commonwealth— is nothing anyone has seen before. It stretches from as low as the 20s to as high as 200s in some parts."

Kanae knew that well. Using the Writ of Divine Lease from the Rift to bless this land had flourished it for not just people, but also monsters. They averaged out to mostly 100s, which was still a good stepping point after Lograin for a lot of adventurers.

The party of four departed to do their quests, and Teana waved them goodbye until they were out of sight.

"Ah! Mama, I'm going to be late!" Teana exclaimed.

"Don't worry, sweetie. I'm the queen. They have no choice but to wait," Kanae said, picking up Teana to fly her there.

The schoolhouse was among the many additions to Ehmvier. As the population grew from more people moving in, so did the need to provide extra services. This was Arenade's personal project. To build a  place for children in need.

Kanae furled her wings onto her back as she landed in front of the modest building. It was still in the process of being built and didn't even have a roof yet. Instead, a massive dire beast pelt was laid over it for the time being.

Standing just outside the entrance were Headmistress Marnie and Instructor Alisyn, both of whom Arenade invited. Including the orphaned children from Lograin's school.

Nelly poked his head out the door. "Teana, you're late again. Do I have to come get you in the morning from now on?"

"Is Arenade in there?" Kanae asked the teachers.

"I believe she is on her way out." Marnie glanced inside.

The high elven priest floated out of the door, suspended off the ground with the Halo of Holy Radiance activated.

"I had a feeling you would be here… That's why I told you to stay home. You're due soon. You shouldn't be up and about like this." Kanae sighed.

Walking while pregnant had become difficult enough for Arenade that she used the Halo to fly around instead. It was ingenious, but she really should be resting at home.

"I just want to make sure everything's going as planned. One more place on the list, then it's right back to home. Promise!" Arenade assured her.

Maybe it was because Arenade carried their child, but Kanae has recently been finding it difficult to tell her no. At least they went together. The last place Arenade wanted to check in on was toward northeastern edge of the city. The first spire could be seen from anywhere.

Gorags were pulling carts full of cut, ivory stones up to the building. Flying over head were harpies, who carried tools and materials up to workers. Mages with telekinetic powers lifted heavy stones to where they needed to be. Goblins climbed all over the scaffolding that formed the bare bones of Arenade's most ambitious project yet.

A whole castle.

Arenade slapped a hard hat over her head and went right to barking orders.

"Be careful with those stones! They cost more than your life, goblin! And you, I see you slacking off behind that cart. Get to work or your ass is getting fired! Where are the crystals? A castle is nothing without crystal chandeliers!"

"I still can't believe you're building a castle." Kanae put a hand to her face.

"If you're going to be queen, and I'm going to be ruling by your side, then obviously we can't be seen living in some dingy cabin. A castle is a monument of strength and wealth! Of which we have plenty of," she said, eyes glinting with the same shine as the crystals being carted in.

As they were about to leave, one of the carts carrying the crystal chandeliers snagged a wheel on a crack in the road. The gorag pulling the vehicle didn't notice and continued forward. Since the goblin driver couldn't detach the harness fast enough, the cart snapped in half, and the chandelier crashed to the ground and broke into a hundred pieces.

Arenade, who saw it all happen, stormed to them in a fury.

"That was a million gold, you son of a—"

"Shouldn't you two be at the mine? What happened?" Kanae asked.

"Might want to come see for yourself," Ingrid said.

Arenade stayed behind while they ventured deep into the mineshaft to show Kanae a massive hole in the wall. A group of goblin miners was by the edge and backed away upon seeing them coming.

"What exactly am I looking at?" Kanae asked, peering into the hole as far as the torchlight illuminated.

"A hole. Mind you, none of the miners made this," Ingrid asked.

"Swears it wasn't us," a goblin said, then singled out one of his companions. "Gorpy over here hit the wall and it came crumbling down."

The goblin named Gorpy nodded. "When the wall fell, I heard something growling."

"They're afraid of digging any further until it's taken care of," Takumi added.

Kanae snatched a torch off the wall, then flew into the tunnel. It seemed to stretch forever until she came to a deep hole with varying sizes of tunnels all along the wall. She returned to the others to report what was on the other end, and they were all stumped.

"Maybe you can send some of them adventurers down here to take care of it," Ingrid said.

"Too dangerous… I feel like I should handle this myself. Or actually. I have a better idea. Bring Mitty down here," I ordered them.

Ingrid and Takumi went to fetch Mitty. They returned not long later with him in tow, who was in gear for cave-diving.

"You needed my help?" Mitty asked.

"We're going down together, honey. It might be a little scary, but I'll spoil you tonight in exchange." Kanae wrapped her arms around Mitty to the envy of others, then flew them down the tunnel.

When the two reached the other end before the big drop into the hole, Mitty gaped in astonishment. He went to work as soon as she let him down, inspecting the gravel at their feet, pressing an ear to the wall, and gazing over the edge for any clues.

"I think I know what this is! Stone borers. They aren't dire beasts, just really big worms that eat metal and rock. Whatever they eat, they usually develop a carapace of that type on their bodies," Mitty explained.

"By the looks of it, they eat a lot. We have to take care of them or Ehmvier might fall into a sinkhole… Alright. It's too dangerous to keep you down here. Let's bring you back up, and I'll deal with the borers on my own—"

Mitty shook his head. "I'm staying with you. You're my wife after all! Besides, you won't know how to track them unless I help you. I-I also want to protect you…"

A hard yank pulled her behind a rock formation jutting out of the water. Mitty placed a hand to his lips, then pointed into the darkness ahead. The rumbling came first. Suddenly, a giant worm bursted from the wall. The segmented creature ran its round jaws across the ground, scooping up the scattered stone into its gullet.

However, the color and texture of its body took Kanae and Mitty by surprise. Their eyes went to the gemstone in her hand. It was the same thing.

"No sense in hiding if we need to exterminate that. I'm going in!" Kanae leaped out of cover and flew straight for it with the crystalline sword drawn.

"Wait!" Mitty yelled, but she was too far to hear the rest.

The worm, without any eyes or ears, sensed Kanae was coming. It turned to her and screeched. She stopped her approach and pressed both hands to her ears. Without warning, a dozen borers popped out of the wall and ground.

"Titanic Blow!" Kanae plunged her sword into the borer, but the tip of the blade didn't pierce its crystalline head.

Another borer leaped past and snatched the sword in its jaws. With a hard crunch, it ate her weapon whole.

"Are you serious? Do you know how much that cost me?!" Kanae cried.

Wait a minute. If they ate stone, then…

Kanae cast Charm at the borers immediately around her. They fell under her control as the spell took effect.

The Saint Priest drakeling brought out a scroll and began reading it aloud, "The Grand Eye, her grace Analise Bellevue, invites Queen Kanae Toyomi of the Commonwealth of Sin to meet with her in Lograin to discuss an alliance between your kingdom and Radevic… as well as your candidacy to become a Knight of the Order of Colors. Do you accept?"

Sharp gasps erupted across the worship hall. Kanae met Estaline's gaze, who was standing behind Vestrid. She nodded and smiled reassuringly, putting Kanae at ease that this wasn't a trap.

Finally, after Bardell took everything away from them, they could finally return to Lograin and claim what was theirs. Not only that, Kanae had a chance to claim one of the highest prestige in the land as a demon.

Kanae looked Vestrid in the eyes and declared, "I accept."
