“Oii, Averyyyy!” Liamʼs head popped out from behind the classroom door. “What are you still doing inside the classroom for? Letʼs go down for recess—”
Angelica very slowly pulled her lips from mine, at first keeping her eyes closed, and then opening them without letting her eyes move from mine; a thin string of saliva connected our lips as we stared into each otherʼs eyes silently.
“Well?” she asked expectantly, a playful smile at the corner of her wet lips.
“Mm…” I frowned and shook my head. “Nope, my memories are still too hazy to make out, sorry.”
Angelica let out a resigned sigh, then turned around to glance at a stupefied Liam. “Give us a moment, I have to do this for the sake of world peace.”
“W-world p-p-peace…?” Liam stammered, completely broken on the inside.
Ignoring him, she met my wide eyes and smirked. “Since that didnʼt work, I have one last ace up my sleeve to help you.”
I didnʼt even have time to react before she raised her fist and slammed it down hard against my stomach. The air in my chest was suddenly gone as I gasped and bent over.
“As expected of the Hero, you can withstand a Goddessʼ punch…” Angelica muttered, then whacked something heavy over my head.
The next instant, I fell into pitch-black darkness.
No…it wasnʼt exactly pitch-black darkness, because I could make out the tall, shadowy outlines of trees towering all over me. Slowly I began to hear the susurrations of leaves, even though the air was deathly still.
“...w-whoʼs there?” I mumbled, squinting my eyes at the darkness.
A low voice that carried a very sharp edge sent a chill down my spine. “Whoʼs here?”
Suddenly, a slender figure materialised from the shadows to my front and gilded towards me; her footsteps barely made a sound on the forest ground. The hem of her silken midnight blue dress trailed behind her like smoke. Her blurry lilac eyes rested on me, at first with apprehension, then she visibly relaxed.
“I wasn’t expecting you, of all people, to intrude upon this space.”
I squinted my eyes at her, but it somehow felt like there was a film obscuring my vision; no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get a clear look of her face.
She shook her head and laughed. “A normal human brain is incapable of creating faces on its own, so it won’t work since you have never met me in reality before.”
She took a step forward and leaned in close. “Hmm…though your appearance differs, you are undoubtedly my reincarnation. Then, you must have a good reason to come here?”
