The silence in the classroom was only punctuated by the ominous ticks of the wall clock.
Keeping his gaze on the second hand, the Math teacher, Mr. Yong, gave a slight cough to get everyoneʼs attention. “Pens down. Pass your paper down to the front row now.”
Immediately a deep sigh of relief arose from the class.
“Man, if I knew it was going to be this easy, I wouldnʼt have studied so hard last night…”
“I heard Mr. Yong set the paper this time, so he purposely lowered the difficulty for us…”
“Woah, really?”
“Class, do remain quiet while I count the papers,” Mr. Yong reminded in a friendly but stern voice. “If you do this in the actual A-levels, it will be deemed cheating, got it?”
“Yes, Mr. Yong,” the students who were chatting among themselves answered meekly.
“If there are no further questions, please get ready for the next period. I know having a test on the first period of the day is tiring, but try not to sleep in class, alright?” He tied the stack of test papers together with a rubber band and looked towards the front corner. “You over there, can you help clean the whiteboard?”
I discreetly kicked the bottom of Angelicaʼs seat. “Oi, wake up.”
“Eh?” She snapped her head up and glared at me before glancing at Mr. Yong. “M-me?”
“Yes, you. Go to the toilet to wash your face if you can’t stay awake, okay?” Mr. Yong smiled thinly. “And by the way, coloured contacts arenʼt allowed in school.”
“Coloured contacts?!” Angelica blinked. “B-but this is my natural eye colour…”
“Thatʼs what they all say,” Mr. Yong said dismissively before stepping out of the classroom.
“T-that asshole…!” she spat while she grabbed the duster and furiously wiped the whiteboard. “How dare he call my marvellous goddess eyes fake??”
I snickered quietly to myself, which earned me a death glare from Angelica.

“Yo, Avery!” Liam shouted, waving his hand at me as he scooted over to my seat. “What did you get for question 3? Is the answer k equals 14?”
“14?” I frowned. “My answer is 11 though…”
“Hehhh?” He recoiled in visible shock and looked around the classroom frantically. “S-Seraphine, what is your answer for question 3?”
Seraphine, who was arranging the materials needed for the next class on her desk, glanced up and shot him a curious look. “Question 3? 11, I think…”
“You guys are getting 11 or 14?” Angelica rejoined in an incredulous voice. “I got -142.69 as my answer!”
“Negative?!”
Liam stepped forward to give the distraught Goddess a reassuring pat on her shoulder. “Donʼt you worry, I am in this together with you.”
“H-huuu, thanks…”
While the two poor students were trying to comfort each other, I felt a discrete tap on my shoulder from Seraphine.
“Hey, what happened to you last week?” she asked quietly. “You just suddenly disappeared from school along with Angelica, and now you two are dating and living together?”
“?” I stared at her in shock; other than Liam, everyone else should not have noticed any difference about me and Angelica. How was Seraphine not affected by the memory alteration spell that Angelica cast?
As if she had been waiting for such a reaction, Seraphine gave Angelica a sidelong glance before returning her gaze on me. “If you ask me, I would try to stay as far away from her as possible.”
I hesitated, trying to guess at her intention. “...o-oh.”
“Just an advice.” She continued without a hitch, “I heard from Liam that you and Angelica are taking part in the talk tomorrow. We are having a dry run during recess later, please feel free to join us.”
Without waiting for my reply, Seraphine gave me a faint smile before returning to her seat, just as the bell signalling the start of the second period rang.
