Chapter 5: Visitors (1)

(November 19, 2007)

Inside an orphanage in the middle of nowhere the sound of singing children could be heard;

 

"Happy Birthday to you-- Happy Birthday to you--- Happy Birthday Happy Birthdayyyy --- Happy Birthday to you!"

 

"Happy Birthday Fred"

 

Said a boy while holding onto a wrapped-up gift.

 

The boy had brown buzz-cut hair and round brown eyes, he was also for his age very tall and big which coupled with his squared face and fierce look made him resemble a bear cub.

 

"Oh, is that my gift? To think "that" Orson would actually prepare something for me … it's not something dangerous is it?"

 

The boy who replied was the birthday celebrant who just turned 5 today, Fredrich.

 

He had short blonde hair with deep blue eyes, he wore glasses due to his bad eyesight and for his age, he was a little thin.

 

"What did you say you ass? And here I am trying to be kind to you, yet those words are the first thing you say to me? You still suspect me?"

 

"Oh yeah? Why don't you open that gift up and let's see what you prepared for me?"

(In a road leading to the town)

 

"Sighhh, why do we have to do this boss? Didn't we already gather enough children for the project?"

 

"Silence, that damn chairman wants no stone unturned as there is a chance we may miss an exceptionally talented child, this is the last town that we haven't visited yet so just suck it in."

 

"Ah, fine … I haven't had the chance to rest for days now, I hope this will end quickly… We’re going to be counting on you again, Ken."

 

"Hmmm"

 

Nodded a man at the back of the truck.

 

The man had long black hair tied in a ponytail, he had a fair face where if you look at him from afar you wouldn't know whether or not he was a man or a woman. But the most interesting thing about him was the eyepatch on his right eye.

 

The eyepatch hides his gift from others as after receiving his gift his right eye suddenly changed. It went into a green color from black, with his pupils forming into the shape of a yellow circle.

 

[Gift Observation] this was the gift Kendrick received.

 

As its name suggests, it is an ability that allows the user to know what gift the person he lays his right eye on possesses.

 

The only downside is that he can't turn it off, due to this he has to hide it with an eyepatch all the time, or else every time he meets another person that person's gift would crowd his vision.

 

"It has already been a month since the Head instructed us to look for talented children fit for the project. But other than those "two" we haven't found anyone else worthy to become a 'named' as most of the bigshot candidates were recruited by the other team’s first,"

 

"Do you think it's that easy to find a child with a good gift when 6 out of 10 people only have [Physical Enhancement] as a gift? Wake up Jake, although we might not have enough talents worthy to be 'named' we did have a couple who has what it takes to endure, and possibly finish the program."

 

"Whatever you say... (mumble) aren’t I suppose to be the boss here? Why am I the one getting scolded."

 

“But even though it’s true that compared to the others we’re inferior in quantity, the ‘two’ that we found however...

Pausing for a second before letting out a huge grin, Ken continued

...were pretty much monsters.”

 

“...Heh, you said it.”

 

“That’s why don’t worry, after we return expect all three of us to receive a promotion.”

 

Said Ken as he looked out of the window.

 

he didn't know why but he has a good feeling about this town, although it is only wishful thinking, maybe~ they could find another monster there?

 

Yeah right.

 

"...B-but are you guys sure that I should take the most credit? we all know why I got the boss title despite being weaker than Ken..."

 

"The reason doesn't matter, what matters is that you’re in charge of this mission, so lift your head high."

 

"...yeah... your right! hahahahahaha."

 

seeing that Jake's mood became brighter, Ken smiled slightly and stayed silent, deciding to enjoy the rare peacefulness inside the truck for the rest of the trip.

 

{Now that it’s the final stop, we should just take it easy and get this over with.}

 

But contrary to what he wanted, rather than taking it easy, Jake started having strange ideas... ideas that would without a doubt make things more troublesome than they originally should be.

 

“Since this is already the final stop... why don’t we do something special?”

 

“?”

 

“Don’t worry, don’t worry, shouldn’t we also test out our participants’ guts? This might be a good way to do so.”

 

“...I don’t like the look on your face.”

 

Said Ken with a tired expression.
