“Tales of Fantasy Online” (TOFO). You might say it is a shit title for a game, but for the past 3 years it has stood at the top of all fantasy games as a VRMMORPG. With the latest VR technology companies could replicate all of the five senses; however, most nations had banned the sense of touch. They were scared of people having heart attacks from game companies introducing sensations of pain.

The reason people loved TOFO was due to its player freedom. There were trillions of combinations people could use to make their own unique class and character. I was no different from the rest of the players. I also played for the player's freedom, but my character was unique. My only character was a vampire progenitor named “Eliah” or “Lia” for short.

Vampire progenitor’s were a race you could only play as if you preordered the game. The race featured the largest bonus to the status it would receive, but this was balanced by the fact that if the character died it was a perma death. I painstakingly spent hours on the character customization screen crafting a beautiful little vampire.

She was short with long black hair. She had the most beautiful crimson eyes, but she was basically flat chested. I created a female character because I liked their designs more, and through years of grinding with my character. I created a gothic castle like no other. It was filled with NPC subordinates. I didn’t bother making a guild because I wasn’t good with people. I was a solo player. People would often try to raid my castle because of what I had done to other players or just for the fun of it.

I was a skilled pvp player with countless player kills. There was a reason I was the last vampire progenitor on the server, and this was because I killed most of the others myself. Currently I sat atop my throne wearing my typical black robes. These were the robes I had acquired through painstaking hours of dungeon crawling. They were artifact level robes called “Progenitor’s Shadow”. I got them from killing the same vampire overlord boss multiple times in the same dungeon. They would provide a large boost to my shadow magic and blood manipulation. They weren’t originally black in color. They had been dyed by one of my NPC subordinates.

NPC’s were vastly more intelligent in this game than the other games I tried. They could actually follow commands. Granted they weren’t as intelligent as human players, but it was alright for me. I cultivated the strongest NPC subordinates through my work as a solo player, and no one could ever make it to the throne room yet. My NPC’s would always kill them before they ever got that far.

I sit atop my throne just thinking about the castle I have built. The walls and floors of the castle were pristine. Painstakingly cleaned by the maids. Even dirt would accumulate in this game, but my maids took care of it. Currently the head maid, and my strongest subordinate entered the throne room. She takes a knee before me as per her coding. Then I get a dialogue prompt from her.

{Our Castle is being raided by Lion’s Heart. They will soon arrive in the throne room. What should we do?}

Earlier I had received a prompt when they started the raid, but it seems the head guild on the server had actually almost made it here. The guild leader is said to be the top player in the game, and he goes by Leo. I know all about him from the forums, but even if he is a strong player, raiding large castles in TOFO is challenging. I was smiling a little in anticipation at the prospect of fighting the strongest player.

I had never had the chance to pvp versus him, and I am not certain if I would win in the end. Finally I would have the chance to figure it out. As I had thought, the Large throne room door was busted open. My character maintained their bored expression. Role playing was of importance in this game for the player base. The wine glass in my right hand full of blood hung lazily as blood swirled around it.

In front of me were three individuals, not all 50 of the members of their guild. I imagined the rest either perished on their way over, or they simply did not participate. Rela assumed a protective stance in front of my throne as I looked down at Leo. I won’t lie, I was currently a little angry. They had rudely barged into my castle and presumably they had done away with the rest of my subordinates. As Rela was the only one here.

He had handsome features, and short blonde hair. The two women next to him I recognized. One was Alanna the elven mage, and the other was Anna a human priest. I spoke up from my throne first. “Don’t you think it is rude barging into a lone girl’s castle and killing her subordinates?”

“You are no girl. You are a monster. Do you have any idea how many players asked us to kill you? You are the last progenitor for good reason. Getting here was a pain in my ass.” Leo quipped back at me.

They were all looking at me with anger. I was glad that I had at least wasted a good amount of their time, in what was supposed to be my last moments as this character. I could tell that it was about to be a sad farewell to those hours I spent. I just hoped the ring on my finger would work as it was supposed to.

I had fully prepared for an event like this. I had gotten an item that I was certain I was the only one who knew about. While I was grinding for the robes upon my person,  I got this special ring from that same vampire overlord. The ring was called “Ring of Progenitor Resurrection.” The description didn’t say much about the item, but it was my only hope for this character.

The fight began without any more words being spoken, and eventually I was whittled down. My subordinate Rela lay dead in front of me, and I was currently on my knees missing an arm. I was secretly glad that they hadn’t introduced a sense of touch in this game. I was also bitter that I had lost as Leo held his sword to my neck.

“Do you have any last words? ‘Eliah the immortal’?” I could tell he was mocking me, and I wanted to get back at the bastard. I just smirked at him wordlessly. Then he brought the sword down on my neck and offed my head. My ring shattering was the last thing that I saw.

{You have died…}

{Resurrecting Vampire Progenitor… Standby}

The screen went bright white, and I couldn’t see for a while. I don’t know how long my vision was filled with white, but the first thing to return as a sensation was a massive headache. I closed my eyes due to the pain. Then I felt the next sensation. There was a gentle breeze against my skin. I was currently kneeled over with my hands on the grass. The grass beneath my hands felt prickly.

“Wait feel?” The voice that left my mouth was the clearest soft voice. I had never thought my voice had been this clear in the game. This was new to me. “Was there an update? Why am I feeling the grass beneath me?” I got up quickly and looked down at my outfit. I wasn’t wearing the black robes that I was familiar with. The robes I was currently wearing were white. I recognized them from the game. “Robes of Progenitor Concealment”. These were robes that would hide my vampiric features, and for some reason it turned my hair silver and my eyes blue.

It was useless in the game as no one really cared whether you were a vampire, but it was good for roleplay. Or if you are like me, it was good for stealth kills on other players. I was just confused why I currently had them on. Did the Devs make you equip this if you died as a progenitor? That wouldn’t make sense though. There could be a possibility someone acquired the ring I had without getting the robes, but it was a slim chance.

It took countless time and money sinking into the game to get all of the equipment I and my subordinates had. I started to look around me again, and everything in the forest I was currently in was more vibrant and colorful. I could hear the sound of birds chirping, and in a bush not far away there were red berries dripping their juices on the ground.

In a tree not far away there were red fruits I recognized. The fruits brought a feeling of nostalgia. They were “Apples of Rejuvenation”. They were good for restoring 50 hp, which was only really good for new players. Of course you could brew them in a potion as well. Quickly I realized my mind was wandering away from what I should be thinking about.

“Right, I need to open my menu.” I tried to open my menu with the usual gesture, but nothing happened. I tried again and again, but no matter what nothing would happen. “Huh? Why won’t my menu open? Maybe I could try logging off?”
“Force Logoff!” I yelled out, but nothing happened. I tried again and again to logoff, to no avail. No matter what I tried, nothing would work. Every gesture was also seemingly broken. I probably looked like a mad woman flailing my arms about, but I didn’t care I needed to get the logout function to work. It didn’t work, though.

In the end I fell to my butt on the grass in exasperation. The menu wouldn’t open. The message function wouldn’t open. Nothing I tried would open anything. I didn’t want to believe it. I couldn’t believe it, and there was the fact that I could physically feel sensations of touch. “This should be impossible, but… everything around me seems… real.”
