The possibility of this being reality suddenly hit me like a semi. Trying to forcefully log myself out of the game hadn’t worked, and my head was still throbbing. As I looked up towards the sun filtering through the canopy of trees, the pulsating migraine bit back. I clenched my teeth at the pain that I felt behind my eyes. My temples were pounding at me. I glared at the sun before trying to focus my attention elsewhere.

I looked down at my body again. I was definitely in the body of the character I had made. That much was obvious. I remembered every detail of this body. Even the robes I was currently wearing I had gathered myself. “What is even going on?”

It was hard to gather my thoughts through the headache. There weren’t any clues around me either. There were just trees and trees and more trees; however, standing around in one spot wasn’t going to get me anywhere. There were still more tests I could do. As my head throbbed once more I looked up towards the sun and cast a glare at it. The feeling was like being hungover only to have a light shone in your face, and I despised it.

“How should I proceed?” There was no menu for me to use magic with. There were no hotbars, and I couldn’t see a status effect. There should have been one displayed in the corner showcasing lowered attributes due to the sunlight. Even if progenitors could survive in the sunlight, they still had the intrinsic weakening that was only offset by gear. “That’s just it, how do I even access my gear?”

“I have tried doing things that were simple in the game, but if this is real…” A huge part of me suspected everything around me was the real deal, but the rational part of my brain didn’t want to accept this deduction. There were so many noises playing out around me. Creatures could be heard scuttling about to and fro. The sound of rushing water played in the distance. Even focusing my eyes in a direction had a magnifying effect. If I turned my head towards the sounds of a small creature’s footsteps I could see them clearly, if they weren’t blocked by trees. Even a colony of ants had been magnified from a large distance.

“I still have the keen senses I had in the game. In that case…” I focused my eyes on my body this time. Instead of magnifying, there was a dark hue coming from my body in waves that became visible. It was like a black halloween smoke that spread out for some distance over the ground. I tried to reach out and grab it with my hand. The hue wrapped around my fingers as I pushed my hands through it. It was easily malleable, and it seemed to dance in delight as I played with it; although, that was probably just my imagination. Even still, I grinned like an idiot. There was a feeling of excitement building within me.

I tried the next thing I thought of, which was seeing if my own thoughts would have an effect. As I thought to retract the smoke surrounding my hand, the hue was immediately sucked into it. I did the same thing for the rest of the black mist surrounding me, and all of it got sucked into my body. It sent me a wave of electricity. I felt as though I had just downed an energy drink.

“Hoh, I could get used to this feeling.” I clenched my fists at this feeling of empowerment. Knowing that I could control this energy with my mind, I decided to try the next step. I pushed a palm outwards and imagined the energy leaving my hand. It easily pushed out; in fact, it pushed out with too much force. A black cloud the size of my own fist shot from my hand and punched a hole through a tree stopping halfway through the thick tree trunk. There was a noticeable depletion in my energy, but I was easily able to suck the ball back into my hand despite the 10 meters it had traveled away from me.

I did this a few times. I would send the energy away from myself, or I would bring it back. Each time I did this, I became even more proficient. I kept walking towards the sun while I practiced. The distraction helped my headache, and once I felt like I was good enough at handling the energy I started trying spells I knew in the game.

{Shadow Mold} was the easiest category of the shadow magic tree to acquire in TOFO, and it was here where I started with the most basic spell. I pointed my palm at another tree as I molded the darkness within my arm. The result: I successfully shot out a small [Shadow Spike] that pierced a few inches into the tree. I tried to retract the shadow as I had before, but this time it wouldn’t come back to me. Actually the [Shadow Spike] dispersed altogether.

“Curious… What is this supposed to mean?” I tried again with the same spell, but every time it wouldn’t come back to me no matter what. “Does this mean that I lose it if I use it in a spell?” I put my hand to my chin in thought. That was very game-like. Characters would of course lose mana if they used spells. “But how come I can return it normally? This is very strange…” Trying to think about that issue was making my headache throb more. “Haah, there is much I need to figure out…”

I didn’t know what forest I was in. I didn’t really know anything about my situation. It was the least I could do to focus my mind on magic as I walked forward. The sound of running water was becoming louder with each step I took, and when I crested a small hill, there was a tiny stream cutting through the forest. I also spotted the first oddity here.

Next to the stream was a ramshackle wooden shack. Moss had started eating away at the sides of the tiny building, and the door was crooked. It seemed ready to break free from its hinges. I slowly approached the place with my palm ready to launch a [Shadow Spike] just in case something would leap out at me. There were 3 rotten wood steps leading up to the door as the structure was slightly raised. Basically, it looked like a really small log cabin that people would go camping in except there were no windows.

I placed a cautious but steady foot forward onto the first step. It didn’t give out from under me after I placed my other foot down as well, but the wood did make an unpleasant groaning sound. The following two steps held as well as I reached the door. I grabbed the handle and pulled the door; however, the door just broke free from the hinges. I was surprised at how easily I held the door up with one hand. I would have expected to pull the door and fall back if something like this happened normally.

I flung the door sideways, and was surprised again at how fast it slammed into a tree. It shattered against the tree loudly as splinters shot out. I looked at the wreckage, and then I looked down at my hand. I repeated this a few times. “I guess this is another thing I have to think about. Well, time to add that to the list…”

I turned my attention back to the inside of the hut. The inside was just as dilapidated, and the threaded homes of spiders were growing from the corners. It was clear nobody had been here for a while. There was a wooden frame in one corner to support a bed, but there was no cushion to speak of. At the end of the bed was a small table that had seen better days. It was cracked all over as though Zues had a vendetta against it.

On the other side of the room was the last piece of furniture. It was a small bookshelf at half my height, and it only had 4 tattered pieces of literature. At least their titles were legible, and I had seen all 4 of these books and read through them before. They were the same ones as in the game. “‘History of Alchemy Volume: 1, ‘History of Alchemy Volume: 2’, ‘Alchemical Remedies’, and ‘Herbal Plants’.” Even flipping through the pages and skimming what was legible over, revealed that they were the same books. “So these books still exist? Now I am even more confused. The only conclusion I can gather is that whoever lived here liked alchemy.”

“Haah”, I sighed as I exited the berth. I didn’t bother to take any of the books as if I could find out how to access my inventory again, I had books in droves. I returned back to the journey in the same direction. My first goal was to find out where in the hell I was. When the sun finally started setting. I finally started getting relief from my head trauma, and as night descended, I felt true bliss. The world of darkness was truly beautiful.
