It took a while, but eventually Rela calmed down. I sat on the chair in front of the small desk, while she took a seat on the bed. “Now that you have calmed down. I am going to need you to explain from the beginning.” She frowned in sadness. The light from her eyes seemed to dim.

“Right… from the beginning… As soon as those bastards raided the castle…” She clenched her teeth, but as I placed a hand on her shoulder she continued. “...I knew something was wrong. They cut me down, and as the light started to fade… I had to watch… as they… as they…”

“You can skip that part. What happened after that?” I wasn’t built for trying to give anyone reassurance. I was most likely only doing this for my own benefit. I was a selfish player, and right now I needed any information she had, so I pressed her. “...After that I am not sure. I have been in a daze up until a few days ago. I felt conscious, but I wasn’t really alive. I am sure I should have died, but through the veil I felt a connection I thought I had lost. I felt the [Blood Pact] between us renew, and I knew I had to see you once more. I struggled against the veil with all my might, and when I regained life, I was here. I felt you coming from the forest, so I prepared a bit for your arrival. I had hoped, and wanted for it to be you. I thought up so many things I would say, but in the end I couldn’t measure up to your standards ....”

I stopped her by raising a hand as I compounded the information. There were a few main issues. The fact of her being in a daze. The [Blood Pact]. Such a thing was way different in the game. There was no beacon for tracing an Npc or vice versa, and yet she traced me. Next is the veil. What exactly was that? Some form of undeath? Had she been manipulated? The questions swirling in my mind created new questions. “What do you mean by measuring up to my standards?”

“What could I say to the generous master who had given me everything? I failed you in so many ways…” She looked ready to break down again, but I put my hand up. “You don’t need to think that way anymore. I am here, and I won’t go anywhere. I can’t have my maid not be proud of who they are. That reflects poorly on your leadership, and who else but me can carry that torch? Your skin doesn’t need to be singed by the light of day. You can wear those boots as you always have as my maid.”

She seemed to ease up from my words, and even a faint smile tugged at the corners of her lips. It wasn’t that smile she had originally given me; instead, it was something real. I was glad that I could ease her burdens, even if that only meant I was less burdened. Though a new conundrum made itself known. How many of my NPCs are here? Are they all tethered to me? If they are, will they soon reach me? I shook my head. It didn’t matter right now. I needed to focus on my immediate surroundings and plan around those. My arms weren’t big enough to carry everything. I needed people in my pocket, and if those happened to be my subordinates that was even better.

“Rela, I am aware that the weight you carry has been heavy, but we need to throw it away. If you are anchored down, then you will only slow us down. Can I trust you once more to carry out my orders?” I expected her to sit and ruminate with the question for a bit, but her eyes sparkled as she bounced up with energy. She quickly kneeled in front of me. “Nothing would make me happier than to be of use to you once more! I pledge that as your maid I will clean up all of the litter, for there is no maid that can measure up to me in all of Castle Zwielichtssaft.”

I shivered a little from her recalling the name of my castle. Of course I had nostalgia and fond memories of the castle, but the original name of the castle was German words put together that I thought sounded cool. The people on the forums of the game site had hammered away with their insults about 8th grade syndrome. That is discounting the many German players who made fun of me. “Hey… Rela…” Power started coming out in my voice. “Ye-yes, master!?”

“Call it Castle Twilight from now on…”

“Bu-”

“No! Listen to me, this is your first order. From now on you will refer to it as Twilight.”

“Yes master! As you will, Zwielichtssaft is now Twilight.” I nodded my head, grateful that she conceded. I didn’t want any people here to dig up that old past. I shook my head refocusing my thoughts. “With that matter out of the way, let's move onto the first order of business… Second order of business. We have a problem. Neither of us knows anything, and we… I have no funds. By the way, how did you get money?” She did pay for the inn after all.

“I simply stole it from one of those adventurers, master. I knew that you would need somewhere to stay. I apologize that the commadations aren’t to your standards.” I waved her off.

“There is no need to worry. You did well in the short time you had to prepare. I am sure it couldn’t have been easy… More importantly, before we get sidetracked. I have an actual job for you…” The day was ticking on, and a lot of it had already been spent dealing with an emotional Rela. It wouldn’t be long before things would become larger than I could control. If I didn’t do something soon, my ship would sink in a titanic disaster. I might have been overthinking, but I would be prepared for a glacier.  “...Do you know [Blood Puppet]?”

“Of course, you were the one to teach me after all.” This certainly made things easier, and I could divide our force of two. I doubted anyone in this city could reasonably harm us from what I had seen, but caution was imperative. “You will use it to take the captain of the gate guard under our wing. I will busy myself with something else in the meantime. I trust my ‘best maid’ won’t let me down.” A large smile spread out over her face. “I will see it done, master.”

“Good, now go.” A puff of smoke clouded her before revealing a midnight blue bat with purple eyes. I opened the shuttered window next to the desk, and she flapped her way outside. The light from outside had started to grow dim, and if she was as good a rogue as I thought, this would be easy. I didn’t have a bat form personally as I never specked into {Transformation}. Though, I could see the resourcefulness of it.

With her now gone I focused on what I could do. I had plenty of tools at my disposal to gather anything I wanted really. I had this newfound hearing ability that was as much a curse as it was a gift. The city was too noisy, even at this time. The only reason it wasn’t grating on me before was my focus on Rela. So it requires me to focus on something? I need to test it. With that in mind I tried to focus on individual sounds as they made their way into my ear. In the street below the inn there were a few people talking.

“I am telling you she was the most beautiful noble I had ever seen.”

“Man, you and everyone else is spreading that shit around. For all we know she isn’t a noble. Maybe she is just a wealthy merchant?”

“Are you kidding? With that air of superiority and that getup, she is definitely a noble…”

Instead of listening to them any further I put my ear next to the window, and tried to see if I could hear anything coming from the Viscount’s household.

“You…to post captain Mcdugle…”

“...Lord…”

It was too hard to hear from this far away with all the excess that filtered in, I closed my eyes and moved the power in my body towards my ears. This enhanced my hearing even further, but the noise was almost too loud to bear. I had to grit my teeth as all of the sounds came in at once. It was painful, but I had to test it. I again tuned into the Viscount’s house, and after focusing once more, the pain dissipated. I could now hear everything clearly. I heard small footsteps echoing. I heard a door close.

“Who was that, father?”

“Go back to your room, fiend. I never asked you to come here, so you can go back where you came from. Also I told you not to call me that in my house…. Whatever, go back to your room, and the maid will bring up dinner.”

“Yes, father…”

The sound of the girl's voice trailed off, and then the door closed once more.

“Fucking child, should just kill over… And now the townspeople and my guard captain are speaking of some runaway noble… Rugal!”

“Yes, my lord!”

“Tomorrow, you will go and fetch this runaway noble. We will welcome her with the deserved hospitality… have Indred prepare my tea.”

A knock at my door pulled me away from the conversation. Actually, it was more of a banging on the door. I quickly got up and opened it to reveal the proprietor standing there. “Girlie! How long do you think I've been knocking?”

“A few seconds?” He sighed in exasperation.

“It was more like a minute. What sort of things were you doing in here? And where is the other girl?”

“She left a while ago, and what we do is none of your business, quite frankly.” He huffed loudly. “Mngh, well whatever girlie! If you don’t want to come down for dinner that’s on you, but I hadn’t seen either of you leave all day. You should really eat something…” I shut the door in his face before he could continue. He grunted from the other side, but I heard his feet go back down the creaky wooden steps nonetheless. “If I wanted to eat something I would make you dry of blood.”
