The legacy of Algrion

Chapter 1: Why is there so much gold?!

“Charlie gets everything.” What kind of last words are those?! Why did he have to give me everything?! I suppose i should give a better explanation…

My grandfather “The legendary Algrion Goldharth” was a legendary adventurer and a hero who built his legacy from the ground up.  Though adventurer was technically his occupation he did much more than that. He once rid an entire forest of monsters. His armor and sword were the most powerful known items on the world! do you get it now?! i was the last person he should’ve given his legacy to!

I’m just a hopeless bronze rank adventurer in a no-name town! Why didn’t he give his stuff to Glorixius?! He was the perfect grandson, a golden knight of Loridia, kingdom of knights! He deserves it!

(*writers note: from here i’ll be writing in third person, deal with it! ????)

Well, no point in thinking about it further. The ceremony was in 4 hours and from the inn he was staying at it was a 3 and a half hour ride. The inn was of such nice quality he was almost going to miss it. Then again it was kind of expectable that the grandson of a legendary hero, soon to be the richest man in the world be treated with a lot of luxury.

He went downstairs to the lobby. In front of the door stood a carriage that had been waiting there for 30 minutes, just for him. So embarrassing. He didn’t have any fancy clothes so he wore his normal clothes: a brown shirt and pants with a white undershirt. The thought of him in those dirty clothes in the middle of all those rich elites standing at the podium while he received everything made him shudder.

He stepped into the carriage. He really didn’t want to get thát much stuff. he just wanted a simple happy life in a small town. Now there’s no doubt everyone would be after him. But he’d complained enough. “I can do it.” He told himself. It wasn’t convincing.

The rest of the ride felt like an eternity. He felt like everyone was watching him. And he had a feeling it was a feeling he would be reminded of way too much. Every minute he sat in that carriage he dreaded the idea of this party even more. Eventually they arrived at their destination: a big golden palace that probably blinded a dozen unsuspecting bystanders on a daily basis. He was one of them.

Without thinking he got out of the carriage. Which was a mistake. He was immediately stunned by a thousand flashes at once. (‘So that’s that new light magic that captures a moment in time huh?’ He didn’t like it). Next came the overwhelming mass of voices overlapping each other. “How does it feel being the richest man in the world?” “What are you gonna do with all this money?” “Why did Algrion decide to give you everything?” “Why do you deserve all this stuff?” All kinds of questions he didn’t know the answer to himself. “No no” He groaned, completely disoriented. He immediately regretted the response. Everything he said was definitely being recorded by talented sound mages as well as on paper. He didn’t want to look more incapable than he already did. Somehow he made his way through the crowd. On a carpet that undoubtedly cost more than his house. (Or pervious house).

The inside was somehow even more glamorous than outside. He found himself in a big hall about the size of the park near his house (and he was supposed to be more rich than the guy who owned this place?!). As he was wondering If the toilets were made of gold too, a familiar face came into view. “Glorixius!” He said. He was wearing golden armor that was probably for show. His face had a kind expression like always. Despite his combat skills and monthly income, Glorixius had always been kind to him. “Hey Charlie, ” he said with a smile “nice party!” he grinned like Charlie was the one hosting it. “yeah.” Charlie said miserably. “I don’t deserve this.” Glorixius frowned. “Nobody does. Algrion chose you, respect his choice and stand tall. Anyone who disagrees with you receiving his legacy disagrees with Algrion.” It was actually a pretty good peptalk. “Thanks.” Charlie said. “It’s nice to have someone support me once in a while.” “Hey i’m going to go see what the bar has to offer, you wanna come with? If i bring you, maybe i’ll get a free drink!” Glorixius said. Charlie let out a nervous laugh. “It does seem like thats how my luck works but i think i should go join the dancefloor, get to know some of the higher ups, get some support”. “Yeah sure, of course.”

The rest of the half hour he spoke with three people. the first was an old man which ran the biggest chain of inns in Loridia. Charlie managed to piss him off when he asked why they didn’t invest in good toilets (apparently they did). The second person he spoke was the…

king’s brother’s daughter’s grandma’s sister…

or the king’s brother’s wife’s aunt?

In other words her familie married into the royal one. He managed to piss her off by stepping on her toe while they were dancing. For the 29th time. The third guy he talked to was about to walk away after his offer to work as chef at his home was denied. Right before he could stomp off Charlie was called to the stage.

“Here we go.” He thought while walking up the steps. He thought about smiling to hide his nerves but he quickly decided it would probably send the wrong message if the smile even came out as a smile. He decided to (try to) look sincere instead. He looked into his reflection in the stairs and saw that his expression didn’t look to bad.

On stage was a scroll and a pencil floating in the air. The the scroll was about 30 cm wide and 45 cm long. It was decorated with red lint and everything written on it was in fancy letters. Next to the magic floating scroll stood an old man, the priest. Charlie took his place on the other side of the scroll and kneeled. Before the event someone had explained to him how everything would go down. but he still wasn’t sure if he was doing it right. He saw some guy leaving the room from the corner of his eye. He was expecting the priest to say something like “What are you doing, i was the one that was supposed to kneel.” or “No, you were supposed to kneel over there.” But to his relief none of that happened and the priest started to speak.

“The demands set for this deed state that you are not to sell or abandon the assigned items. Furthermore it demands that you take responsibility for any items that should be fed or otherwise kept up to date. Do you swear to uphold these demands as long as you live and breath?” Charlie placed his right hand on his left shoulder and spoke the words: “I do”. “Then by the power vested in me, by God and my studies of law at saint sciddleson’s school for law, order and belief, i declare you officially the owner of all items in said deed. please sign.”

Charlie stood up and picked the paper and pencil right out of the air. That must have cancelled the magic because immediately the lower side of the scroll started unrolling. There was probably illusion magic on the scroll because meters and meters of paper started rolling over the floor out of the room. He accidentally caught a glimpse of the amount of money that was prescribed on the scroll. He barely withheld a scream. Thats A LOT of money. Again he felt like the whole world was watching him with envious eyes. ‘Lucky’ him. He signed his name on the paper and immediately  the paper turned to pixie dust and the letters started floating up in the air scrambling over time. The room fell completely silent. It was a beautiful sight, everyone watched in awe as the room filled up with magical little stars. For a moment there was peace.
