(*I originally planned for this to have three parts but now I don’t even know if i’m gonna be finished by part 5)

Charlie didn’t know what a grimm was and he didn’t have time to ask. All he knew was that Synthia sounded worried so he stepped back. The grimm’s yellow eyes locked onto them. A chill went down Charlie’s spine. The grimm froze for a second, then it shot forward like an arrow, it’s eyes leaving a yellow trail. Synthia was quickest to react. She lept in front of Charlie, engaging battle with the grimm. They went too fast for Charlie to see their bodies clearly. It was all just lines flying around.

Dreax and Jole finally reacted and joined the fight. Thrale went to stand with Charlie in case the Grimm decided to go for Charlie. He specialized in magic and big, strong and complicated spells at that, not melee battles. Charlie was still wearing Algrions armor. He was the one with the best equipment and he was still a liability.

Charlie went ahead with Thrale. About three minutes later they came past a portal. Charlie was about to go through it when Thrale stopped him. “T h a T  I s  T h e  p O R t a L  t O  t h E  w I n T E r  H o U s E ,  a T  t H e  n O r t H  p O L e .” he said. Charlie was confused; if it was at the north pole, wouldn’t you want to avoid going there during winters? Before he could finish that thought they were hit by something.

He fell into the snow, which was a shock because temperature didn’t exist in the black dimension. Temperature exist out of moving molecules and there isn’t really anything in the dark dimension except lines. Next to him Dreax was lying in the snow. Charlie realized Synthia, Dreax and Jole must’ve bumped into him and Thrale while fighting the grimm. Wait a minute, that meant… He looked up, Standing over them was the grimm.

Charlie had expected the grimm to take some kind of 3d form to adapt to our dimension. Instead it was like our dimension adapted to him. Where the grimm’s outline had been was now what looked like a tear in our reality. Within the outline it was still black and 2d. Wait, can this thing alter reality? isn’t this bad? A laser bolt shot through it’s head. Charlie traced the origin of the laser bolt next to him where Thrale was still holding his hand out towards the head of the grimm, smoke coming out of his hand.

“Couldn’t you have done that earlier?” Charlie asked. “Grimms are a lot stronger in their own dimension than they are in ours.” Synthia answered calmly. “But you guys seem fine” Charlie noticed. It was true, not a scratch was to be seen on Synthia and the others. “Thats because of healing potions.” Synthia explained. “We burned through a whopping 57 of them!”

“We should get back to the dark dimension.” Synthia said. “Otherwise-“ zombies came out of the portal. “That will happen, run!”  Everyone stood up and ran.

Taria couldn’t hold it anymore. Charlie had survived her trap and a grimm. The odds of that were next to zero! His luck had been insane! Why did god hate her? Surely some sadistic psychopathic family murder wouldn’t be enough to make him stop loving you? She took a deep breath. She realised she could actually enjoy this, like a cat playing with his mouse. “Come on! Put more heart into it!” She said sadistically.

“Can’t we just leave them here?” Charlie complained. “What? Are you crazy? Do you have any idea how much work Algrion put into the house he built here?” Synthia exclaimed. “The vacation islands is a failed project where Algrion tried to make a tropical vacation park. Short story, it didn’t work out. Something to do with a tentacle monster?” She kind of sounded like a fan girl obsessing over a hero. Guess she kind of was.

“All the zombies are out of the portal” Jole reported. She was still wearing rags, yet somehow she wasn’t totally freezing. “Great!” Synthia exclaimed. “We can now loop back around to get into the black dimension again.”

When they arrived at the portal again it was already a few hours later. They had met a polar bear along the way but it had been no problem. poor polar bear…

Taria realized she had been played. “What?! Why did no one stay behind to guard that portal!” She cursed as she blamed the zombies. “I wish those damn things were smarter! now my little mouse has escaped!”

Charlie, Synthia, Dreax, Jole and thrale went inside of the dark dimension.   After walking for hours they finally reached the portal they were looking for. Along the way they had to use a few more tricks to outsmart the zombies and buy themselves time, but they had made it. They came out at a beach. The island itself was only 50 by 50 meters. “Well you know the plan.” Synthia said. They had been running for 5 hours straight and everyone was tired. Everyone, that is, except Jole (of course). She grinned and said “Wow you guys are starting to look like those zombies!”

“Well you’re not wrong.” Synthia replied. Thrale sighed. He was too tired to say something back. “Your ability to always stay happy never ceases to amaze me.” Charlie said. “Thanks!” Jole replied, visibly excited.

Charlie had thought swimming in this armor was impossible but because of some enchantment it was actually easier then swimming in clothes (figures).

Everything seemed to be going to plan. Shame nothing ever comes easy. “AAGHRBLP-!” With a scream Jole was pulled underwater. “What was that?!” Dreax yelled. Thrale seemed disgusted rather than shocked or concerned and started floating higher above the water. A dreadful realization befell upon Charlie. “Synthia? What was it you said about a tentacle monster?”

chapter 10 bonus:

Umwelt

Consciousness dwells on a plane called memory, where he plays with toys called ideas and memories that fall from the sky. As time goes on more and more toys fall from the sky burying and deforming each other.  Through playing with these toys consciousness learns of the sky where the toys came from. He believes he knows the sky, even though he has never been there, even though the toys that teach him what the sky should look like have been deformed and buried, even though all those toys are just an unfathomably small part of the sky, still he thinks he knows the sky.

Eventually the planet which consciousness dwells on drifts past another planet with another consciousness. Curiously, consciousness tries to communicate with the weird, alien planet by drawing his toys, poorly, and sending these drawings to the other planet and the alien does the same. Consciousness realizes through looking at the drawings of the toys of the alien that he was wrong about the sky, as these pieces do not fit the

puzzle he originally thought the sky to be. Unfazed, he adjusts his vision of the sky and, once again, thinks himself to be right.

Through communicating in this flawed way, he also considers his understanding of the alien planet to be complete. Yet, he has only seen an unbelievably small part of this alien planet, and only though inaccurate drawings no less. Drawings of toys that, once again, had already been deformed just like his own.

In his life consciousness keeps meeting more planets, and is continuously proven to be wrong in his view of the sky. Yet, he never doubts his beliefs. No matter how many times he is proven wrong, he just adjusts himself and goes on. Never, does consciousness know the true appearance of the sky, yet, he is happy until the day he dies.
