Chapter 36 Hell’s Kitchen

Leo was shocked when he heard the gang leader that died under Bucky’s iron fist say that America’s most famous gang leader was Kingpin.

It seemed like this Marvel Universe was not the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead, it was a new parallel universe mixed with all kinds of elements.

Since there was a Kingpin. Then all kinds of superheroes and supervillains could exist.

Leo was much more familiar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If other elements were pulled into this, it would be a bit out of Leo’s reach.

However, that was what made this world more fascinating, right?

Leo was speeding towards his destination, an area on the west bank of Manhattan in New York City. Its official name was Clinton also known as Midwest Town but Leo preferred to call it Hell’s Kitchen.

By nightfall, Leo had driven Bucky to the edge of Hell’s Kitchen.

Gulu…

Bucky’s stomach suddenly growled as he awkwardly smiled and said, “Leo, it’s getting late, what are we going to do next?”

“Just say if you want to eat, there’s no need to beat around the bushes.”

Bucky smiled awkwardly while rubbing his stomach. Leo glanced at Bucky and said, “Let’s find a place to stay. Then, we’ll look for someplace to eat. Actually, I’m starving too!”

Leo finally found a decent-looking hotel after driving around Hell’s Kitchen called Harvest Hotel. Moreover, the “Harvest Hotel” was written in Chinese[1].

Leo parked the car in the parking lot beside the street on the right side of the hotel. He unbuckled the seatbelt and said to Bucky, “Bucky, get out of the car. We’ll stay here tonight.”

Bucky pointed at the trunk after unbuckling the seatbelt and asked, “What about the things in the trunk? Bring it to the hotel or leave it here?”

The things inside the trunk were Lightweight Power Arms Type VI that Leo simply repaired and some firearms. Inside the trunk also had the riches they robbed from the mobs along the way.

“Leave them in the car first. The hotel is not that safe either. Besides, these things can’t simply be taken out.”

Bucky nodded and followed Leo to exit the car. After he looked around the surroundings and noticed there were traditional Chinese letters everywhere and asked, “Leo, this looks like a Chinatown! You look like an Asian, are you Chinese?”

“I’ve been maintaining your mechanical arm for so long, yet you actually don’t know my past?”

“My mind used to be muddled, besides some important things I did, I can’t remember the others. You didn’t have any presence back then, how could I remember your past?!”

Leo did not think Bucky was lying but he felt Bucky did not have any reason to be polite. However, Leo still reminded him, “I can be counted as Chinese, but I don’t want to mention the past and you should stop asking. Let us live a new life.”

Bucky pondered a bit after seeing Leo was unwilling to talk. He knew he rambled too much and hurriedly said, “Leo, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to probe for your secret, I was just being talkative. You’re the one who saves me, I won’t have any bad intentions toward you.”

“Cough, cough… Bucky, it’s fine, you don’t have to apologize. You made me feel bad for saying this.”

Leo smiled awkwardly when he saw Bucky’s innocent face. He rubbed his nose and continued, “Let’s not stay here and see if there’s any room available in the hotel. After checking in, we can go for some dinner. I only ate some bread when I was driving from morning till now, I’m starving.”

Bucky’s stomach suddenly growled again. Leo laughed and brought Bucky towards the hotel entrance.

However, before they could enter the hotel, someone stopped them.

“Excuse me, these two gentlemen. I stood there and watched you for some time, are both of you locals?”

Leo did not answer immediately. Instead, he was sizing up the girl in front of him. She looked like a fresh university graduate.

She was 1.65 meters in height and had a backpack. She had long hair tied behind her waist and freckles on her face. However, the freckles did not affect her beauty, in contrast, they added some charms. Especially her eyes, full of vigor and liveliness as though curious at everything.

But what was more surprising was this girl said she had been observing Leo and Bucky from afar for quite some time. Both of them had acute senses yet they did not notice it.

Leo remained vigilant and answered, “Hello this beautiful miss, we’re not locals. My friend and I just arrived here after a long trip and wanted to look for someplace to rest. This hotel looks quite nice and we plan to stay here for the night.”

“Huh?! This hotel looks quite nice?! Is it the shabby door that attracts you or the broken window? To tell you the truth, gentlemen. This is Midwest Town, New York City’s largest slum, an infamous land of lawlessness. If you two don’t want to wake up with only a pant left tomorrow, it’s best if you leave here soon and search for another place to stay.”

Leo clearly knew what Hell’s Kitchen was like, but he was more curious about the girl in front of him. He forgot to reply to the girl as he was squeezing his brain trying to remember.

Bucky did not even bother. Although he was talkative in front of Leo, he was cold when facing strangers.

The girl saw both of them remained silent and thought they did not believe her words. She continued with a deep tone, “This place has another more horrifying name, it’s called Hell’s Kitchen. People who live here are as dangerous as a devil.”

Bucky saw Leo kept silent before coldly asking, “Then why are you here? Who are you?”

The girl straightened her body full of excitement after someone replied to her. She took out a name card and gave it to Bucky. “I’m Mary Jane, an intern journalist from Daily Bugle. This is my name card, pleased to meet you two.”

Just as Bucky reached out for the name card, Leo immediately took it. He then extended his hand and said enthusiastically, “I’m Leo Erwin and this is my friend, Barnes. Miss Jane, it’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“I’m happy to meet you too, Mr. Erwin.”

Mary Jane passionately shook Leo’s hand. She then smiled and nodded at Bucky. Bucky managed to force out a smile as a greeting.

Leo continued asking, “Miss Jane, based on your tone, you’re also not a local in this Hell’s Kitchen, right? What are you here for?”

“I’m here for some news about the daily life of ordinary citizens in Midwest Town. I’m preparing to write an article about it. There are rarely any journalists here to interview since it’s a mess here. Besides, the recent employment environment is bad and the competition is fierce. So… you know… I also don’t want to come either!”

Mary Jane shrugged while saying she had a reason to come here. However, Leo knew it was her adventurous gene causing it. But Leo chose to ignore it and continued, “Since it is a mess here, My friend and I will look for another place. But we are not familiar with this place and weren’t sure where it would be affordable. Miss Jane, do you have any suggestions?”

The pager in Mary Jane’s pocket suddenly rang just as she wanted to answer. She took out her pager and then looked at her watch. She apologized to Leo and hurriedly headed towards the nearby phone booth to make a call.

“Hi, Peter. It’s me, Mary. I’m so sorry, I was working on some stuff and forget the time for graduation night. I’ll make it on time if I head there now!”

Leo’s hearing had been enhanced by the Super Soldier serum, so he could hear the conversation Mary Jane had.

Mary Jane casually chatted for a bit before running back to Leo and quickly said, “Mr. Erwin, you can leave Midwest Town by driving south along this road to the end of it. It’s safer there and you can simply find any decent place to stay. I have something urgent, I’ll leave first.”

Mary Jane hastily ran to the roadside and drove her blue pickup truck away after saying this.

Leo saw her left and looked at the name card in her hand again. He nodded in contentment and headed toward the entrance of Harvest Hotel. “Bucky, let’s go. We can eat after checking in the Harvest Hotel.” Leo said to Bucky.

Bucky followed behind him and confusingly asked, “Leo, didn’t Miss Jane say this place was too messy? She suggested we don’t stay here to prevent trouble.”

Leo stopped his footsteps and asked Bucky, “Bucky, are we afraid of trouble?”

Bucky was stunned for a moment before reacting with a smile, “I sure hope there’s more trouble.”
