Rowan fixed his expression and went inside, closing the door gently behind him. Even from here, although the house wasn't big, he could hear Rosie excitedly explaining how cool her big brother was to their parents.
"And then he punched him!" Rowan smiled and entered the living room, seeing Rosie's blond hair bouncing about. Their parents, an attractive man in his mid forties and a pretty woman in her early forties smiled at Rosie.
"Hey." Rowan greeted his parents who nodded in his direction in response. Rowan headed to their room and stripped off his clothes, taking the bronze ring out for the first time and was confused.
"Is this it? Why is the bronze ring suddenly gold?" Rowan turned it this way and that, but aside from the faint glow emanating from the ring, he discovered nothing.
"Brother!" Rosie burst into the room and froze like a deer in headlights. She could see Rowan's body which although wasn't overly muscular was toned by his constant working two jobs.
"Wawawa!" Rowan chuckled as she seemed to have blanked before throwing on a shirt and pulling on a pants. Rosie seemed to snap out of her daze with a squeak followed by their parents smiling fondly.
"Thanks for taking care of our Rosie." Maxwell looked at Rowan and shook his head. How could he not be aware of what went on in his daughter's head, but the recipient of her affection seemed to be a bit dense.
Maxwell and Tia a look of gratitude but Rowan shook his head and looked at the older but cute couple and smiled gratefully. As if knowing his thoughts, the two older people just smiled.
"If I wasn't taken in by you, I wouldn't even be in an orphanage now or have ever experienced what it's like to have a family." Rosie looked at Rowan through her long hair and clenched her fists.
She had heard from her parents how Rowan struggled before he met them, having no one and nothing, but he still managed to put on a brave face for them which pained her heart.
"I'll go take a nap. Fortunately I'm off tomorrow." Rowan took his playe to the sink and washed it, drying it off and heading to their room. Closing the door softly behind himself, he lay down on the twin sized bed and looked at the ceiling as his body relaxed.
"I don't want anything to happen to this family. They're truly good people so perhaps God or whatever controls this world will protect them?" Rowan closed his eyes and gradually entered a deep sleep.
Rowan saw a massive city, and even at this distance, he could tell how absolutely massive the city was. Seemingly forged from silver and gold, with massive towers and palaces extending upwards and onwards forever.
Clouds drifted in the golden skies, and somehow in the very midst of the city, a light that drowned out all else, one Rowan could clearly see came from the largest and grandest palace of them all.
As he was looking in the direction of the city, he felt someone looking at him, maybe due to intuition, and felt that it originated in the city, where all the light was coming from.
"I see you can feel His presence. Even if I was careful, He is all-knowing and all-seeing." Rowan wheeled around and found himself face to face with an angel.
He wasn't using it as a metaphor, because the being before him was indeed too perfect to be human, and that was without factoring in the pristine white wings behind them.
Not just one pair, but three pairs. Each wing was probably ten feet long and formed from beautiful white feathers seemingly made of fire and light. The angel's face was seriously too beautiful and their irises glowed with golden radiance.
"I am called Iofiel, an angel belonging to the First Sphere of Heavenly Beings. A Seraphim. I sensed you had managed to obtain a Halo, and felt your desire to protect others."
"A Halo? Sphere? Is this..." Rowan trailed off because even if this was an angel, in basic mythology, no one could enter Heaven at will. If this was Heaven, was he dead?

"Worry not, you still reside amongst the living Rowan. I meant this when I said Halo." She gestured to her head and a floating Halo formed of light burst into existence above her and the light radiating from it drowned Rowan's vision.
"You want to protect your family right? I can help you do so." Iofiel hid her halo once more and looked at Rowan with an unreadable face that he could not see through.
"Protect them? How?" If he could do so, he wouldn't mind doing it even if it had a consequence since they took him in back then, worsening their own financial situation in doing so.
"The Halo is what remains from an Extinguished Ophanim. A Throne, a being from the First Sphere of Heaven. In the war long ago, they were killed and their light erased from this world. They will not return."
"I'm sorry. I'm guessing the Halo is the golden ring?" Rowan didn't see it blazing with light, but given the fact it was rusty before and it wasn't when he looked at it again, he figured it was that.
"Yes. If their light wasn't Extinguished, they would have been able to return, but it wasn't meant to be. In order to protect your world, what would you give up?"
"Protect Earth? From who?" Rowan wondered if it were demons, but Iofiel looked at Rowan and shook her head sadly, but her words didn't fluctuate at all.
"From us." Rowan felt as if the world were spinning uncontrollably. Why would he need to protect Earth from angels? From Heaven?! He looked at Iofiel for an answer.
"Mankind has sinned Rowan. Broken the laws of Heaven. The world has reached the point where He has decided to start anew. Soon, humans will be judged and found wanting. Angels will descend to cleanse the Earth."
"How can I save Earth then?" Rowan didn't understand how he could possibly stop something of that magnitude. Angels were the servants of the Creator, who could defy them?
"Assume the mantle of Hayliel. She had direct access to His Throne room. If you manage to reach the First Sphere and become a Throne, you will be able to plead with God on Earth's behalf."
"Otherwise, Earth has no chance. Angels of the Third Sphere are already extremely hard to kill by human means, even if they cannot exert most of their strength in the Mortal Planes of Existence."
"Beyond that is the Second Sphere and First Sphere. They cannot be wounded by mortals and we have the strength to carry out His missions, whatever they are. Humans will not survive."
"No First Sphere Heavenly Being will descend, but Second Sphere Powers, Dominions, and Virtues will see to it that humanity will not survive. In order to prevent this, you must reach the First Sphere Throne and that will allow you to assume command of them."
"You will wake soon. If you decide to fight, place the Halo on your head. To grow your Divine Essence, judge sinners and bless those whom deserve it. If you manage to reach the Third Sphere, we will speak again. Should you choose to fight, memories will make themselves known to you on your situation. Goodbye."
The world made of clouds, silver, and gold vanished and Rowan felt a circular object in his hands as he woke. Even now that he knew was this Halo was, and what humanity had in store for them, he was still hesitant.
"If I don't, mom and dad and even Rosie will die. I cannot let them die so it seems there's only one option..." Rowan looked at the Halo which probably felt his resolve and lit up with runes he couldn't read.
"I will become a Throne." The Halo was placed above his head, and when he lowered his hands, it remained in the air above his head. Light exploded from it, consuming his very being with just that, light.
