Patriarch Han took a puff of his cigarette and exhaled. "He has no family background. We subsidized him, raised him, and he's an S+ spiritual power. Theoretically speaking, he's indeed the most suitable candidate."
"I was beginning to believe that you were getting old and had gotten dementia," Han Yanyan said lightly. "Turning a blind eye to the best candidate, while pushing a bunch of unsuitable fellows I don't care for on me. It seems I was wrong and you're still clear-headed. You can still be Patriarch for another eight or ten years or so."
"Your old man can still sit here for the next twenty years," Patriarch Han said. "Wipe those thoughts of usurping the throne from your mind as soon as possible."
He paused. "About Tang Ke… Don't break him."
"Do you think you're qualified to teach me that lesson?" Han Yanyan sneered.
Rage flashed through her father's eyes. "She died in a traffic accident."
"Oh, really?" Han Yanyan leaned back, crossing her arms over her chest. "Only one day after I remarked to you that Aunt Xinya had a suitor, the man disappeared. Then not long after she dies in an 'accident', somehow wearing the engagement ring that suitor bought for her?"
"Around that time, I followed Tang Ke back and felt that something was off, so I spent some money and bought some news off the policeman who handled the matter," she said thoughtfully, "Guess what I found out?"
Patriarch Han gazed at her coldly.
Behind the door, every drop of blood in Tang Ke's body had solidified.
What was Han Yanyan saying? Mom... hadn't she died in an accident? Surely she...
Han Yanyan stopped herself from looking at the door.
Tang Ke's bloodlust was too strong. It was a good thing she had quietly erected a spiritual barrier as soon as she entered the room, or there was no way Patriarch Han wouldn't have detected it.
She continued saying what she needed to say. "I learned from the police that the hovertaxi was damaged from the inside, and that was why it exploded and fell into the sea."
"Who was there who would do that? The only person in that driverless taxi was Aunt Xinya."
"But if you wanted to kill yourself, why do it in such a roundabout way? Oh wait, I get it, a traffic accident... when you say it out loud like that, it doesn't sound as bad as 'suicide'. It wouldn't reflect as badly on a talented, successful son. And in regards to you, there's a relatively low probability of making you angry, which means you won't take it out on Tang Ke."
"Everything carefully considered from every angle, yet still resorting to suicide. Aunt Xinya... really must not have wanted to go on living."
"That's why there are times that I wonder, what on earth did you do to her?"
"Han Yanyan..." There was a storm brewing in Patriarch Han's voice. "You've stretched your hand out too far."
"Even if you can keep the seat of Patriarch for the next twenty years, it'll be mine sooner or later. Important people and important things should be held in one's own hands - isn't that what you've taught me since I was a child? Me learning well and surpassing my predecessor is to your credit," she smiled.
Patriarch Han took a deep breath of his cigarette, exhaled, and flicked the ash off the end. Looking at her, he said, "If you've taken a fancy to Tang Ke, then cultivate his loyalty."
"Do you agree?" Han Yanyan asked.
Patriarch Han acquiesced. "I promised his mother to take care of him," he added. "You… don't break him."
"Thanks for your concern," Han Yanyan mocked, "But I haven't inherited any special hobbies from you. My personal preferences are perfectly healthy and normal, I've never had any plans to ruin a cute little boy. It took me a lot of effort to train him into what he is now."
Patriarch Han hmphed.

"But then again..." Han Yanyan said with a smile, propping up her cheek with one hand.
She was eighteen years old, and the beauty of her smile was unparalleled.
From those gorgeous lips came the most malicious thing the teenager behind the door could possibly have heard--
"The mother was your little white rabbit, and the son is my little white rabbit. It sure is interesting to think about."
Tang Ke heard the boom of a great explosion go off in his mind.
He waited until Patriarch Han and Han Yanyan had left before walking out in a shocked, foolish daze. He didn't return to his room, but headed straight to the apartment he had shared with Xinya.
Xinya was gone, and the apartment was a depressing reminder of that fact, so he seldom came back. A housework robot kept the place spotless, just like it had always been before.
But the rooms were cold, and there was no life in them. Unlike coming home back then, the woman with a gentle smile was long gone.
Tang Ke entered as if he were a ghost.
Nothing in the house had been moved since Xinya's death. Her bedroom and art studio were still untouched. Tang Ke tore off the white cloth covering the easel stand to reveal her final unfinished work.
Gray and black were the primary colours on the canvas. The center was pitch-black, as dark as a black hole in which light was absorbed, never again to escape, utterly powerless.
Tang Ke walked into another room. There were not many things inside the darkened room aside from a treatment cabin in the middle. It had been installed not long after they moved into this apartment.
She had said that it was for his use later on, but in fact he seldom used it. Most of the time, he had his body treated at school right after training. The west wing of the manor was also equipped with a treatment cabin.
Tang Ke raised his hand to touch the cabin and activated the control panel with his spirit. A dim light lit up the dark room, and he called up the user records, starting from the very first day the cabin had been unpacked.
