It had been a wild ride since the first moment Chigusa came to stay with us.
Two more weeks had passed since the three of us went out on our family date and thanks to that there was now a sort of continued peace in the house. Chigusa hadn’t tried to make another move on me directly, though she did on occasion try to tempt me on the sly. Well, she hadn’t said she was giving up on me, only that she herself wasn’t going to do anything physical.
Likewise, there was little in the way of a cooling down period after our honeymoon. Mayuri-san and I were still as physical with each other as we had been since the day she became my wife. Every morning those two would be downstairs on the kitchen porch drinking coffee and gossiping, and every day Chigusa would go to school with me after we got our bentos from Mayuri-san while clinging tightly to my arm. At school there was little room to fend off the acceptance that she and I had gotten back together. Every lunch without fail she came to eat with me, and even my best friend Raita started to believe that we really got back together.
Incidentally, he had gotten back to me on the information I asked him to, and it essentially matched what she told me that night. She hasn’t been hanging out with her two friends as much since that day she went to the karaoke, though she did associate with them daily at school since they were in the same class, and on occasion she still went out with them if only to hang out at a public venue with no guys. She didn’t engage in any reckless behavior that I was aware of and was home with Mayuri-san and I more than not.
My kouhai from the literature club, Kurone-chan, had started along the path of a web novelist as well at this point, and was constantly asking me for advice. She was also something of my mental health support when I talked about what had happened at the beginning and how things were going on now between us three. She was the only person who knew the whole story, that is, besides that one shop lady from the adult boutique.
I’d come home after club, be greeted by my lovely wife with a kiss, write a little in the living room, eat dinner, and then we’d relax on the couch and watch television until bedtime.
One thing that did change since then, was that they would take turns on who got to sit next to me or give me a lap pillow. Mayuri-san felt it was a good way to bond with them both. I was a bit apprehensive at first, I mean, it was like giving Chigusa ammo for the gun that would eventually shoot me in the foot, but true to her word, she never once caused a problem by crossing the physical line.
I was being spoiled by the mother-daughter pair these days, and honestly things were going a bit too good.
It left me feeling uneasy.
A couple more weeks passed by without incident and near the middle of October, a certain incident occurred over the weekend.
“Hey mom, is your phone working?” Chigusa asked my wife.
“It should be… why?”
“Mine isn’t. It says I’ve been disconnected from the network.”
“Is that so?”
Mayuri-san checked hers and sure enough she also was disconnected.
“Come to think of it, we were probably overdue for this to happen.”
“Huh?” Chigusa looked confused as to why.
“Your father probably cancelled our family plan. He had been paying for everything up until now.”
“…”
It never occurred to any one of us at first that it was the case. I had my own phone plan, and Mayuri-san had hers. I didn’t even think that she hadn’t swapped over to a new plan for herself and Chigusa, because I gave her more than enough money for any household affairs like that.
“Shota, darling. Would it be alright if we went down to the phone store and signed up for a family plan?”
Mayuri-san didn’t need to ask, I wasn’t about to say no.
“Can… I have one with a bit more data… please, Shota?”
Chigusa, ever the pragmatist.
“Alright.”
“Yay~”
Chigusa skipped over to hug me and gave me a nice long kiss on the cheek.
I have no idea what she needed all that extra data for, since we have home internet and wi-fi, she’s attached to it naturally while here. At least… I hope she is? I asked just to be sure and yes, both Mayuri-san and Chigusa were attached to the home wi-fi while here.
Heading to the phone store together, the windows were plastered with promotions promising inexpensive upgrades to the latest model, which were of course, entirely bullshit. Upgrade fees, new cases and screen glass that were overpriced, if there was something they could milk you for at three times the price, they did so with a big grin on their face.
For a teenage girl, a phone is an integral part of life. So when I saw Chigusa staring at a display model of the latest phone she had such a longing gaze for, my wallet ended up taking a hit.
Mayuri-san was fine with her phone, since she only used it to talk with her good friend Kanna-chan, her family in Sapporo, and Chigusa along with myself. She also played match games from time to time when bored.
I also was fine, not feeling a need to upgrade at this time. I only had six contacts on my phone anyway. Raita, Kurone, Kanna, Chigusa, a family friend, and Mayuri.
I had received Kanna-san’s contact one day after Mayuri-san got completely plastered from drinking on a Wednesday night a couple weeks back, and her friend gave me her contact information, saying it was just in case I needed to contact her for any reason. I didn’t question it, but just let her add it in. She conversely got my number as well.
So, with a new family plan set up, and new numbers assigned to their phones, we decided to have a lunch date at a fast food restaurant. Mayuri-san had taken the time to call her family, informing them of her new number, and Chigusa did much the same with her friends.
On the last call Mayuri-san made, she learned that a family member had fallen ill and was in the hospital. This caused her a bit of grief over the next few days.
I was unaware of the details, but Chigusa had learned about it from her mother and had a talk with me about it at school.
“Shota, do you remember when I said mom visited my aunt out in Sapporo to help her learn how to care for the baby she had?”
“I remember.”
How could I forget? That was the same time she showed me her naked body and the scar she bore from a young age, due to her father’s infidelity with a married woman.
“Well, she’s in the hospital right now, and having some complications. Mom really wants to go visit her, mostly because she had two more children since then and they’re still young. Her husband, my uncle, works a lot, and all the work is falling on the shoulders of my cousin who’s still pretty young.”
“She hasn’t said anything to me about this…” I admitted.
“She’s… worried you’d object. I mean you two did just get married fairly recently, and she’d need to be away from you for a while. That and it would also leave you alone in the house with me.”

“Ah…”
“Not that she thinks you’d do anything with me, only that you’d be uncomfortable with it only being you and I in the house.”
“That’s true, I would.”
“Since dad cut us off the family phone plan, it probably means I wouldn’t exactly be welcome back there while she’s away…”
“I get it.”
“So, yeah… that’s the situation.”
“Thanks for telling me.”
“I’m doing it for mom more than anything. Her and Auntie are pretty close, and well… Auntie didn’t want to bother her by letting her know she was ill, because she knew mom finally got married, even if it wasn’t to dad.”
“You want me to give her permission to go stay for a while?”
“I do. It wouldn’t be too long, a week or two at most.”
“And will you behave yourself while she’s gone?”
“I swear. For mom’s sake at least.”
“Alright. I’ll have a talk with her tonight.”
“Thanks, Shota.”
And the situation was exactly as Chigusa described.
Mayuri-san’s sister Manako was being treated for exhaustion. She has three children aged ten, six, and four. The older two are girls, and the youngest a boy. Her sister’s husband was rarely home due to it currently being the busiest season at his workplace right now, and the only other family members who could help, already were. Their mother lived one town over, and came to help on the weekends. The husband’s mother and sister lived further away and had already taken turns helping out for a couple of days each, but they also had lives that were troubled by this.
“I didn’t want to burden you with something like this so soon, darling.” Mayuri-san said to me when I approached her about it.
I gave her a hug and let her know I was completely fine with it.
“You know I lost my mom and dad. It would be terrible for the kids if her condition got worse. If you think you can help without it doing the same to you, I can get by for a little while without you. I’ll miss your cooking though.”
She laughed.
“Just my cooking?”
“What do you think?”
After a nice spontaneous romp together, she let me know that it wouldn’t be all bad while she was gone.
“I’ve been teaching Chigusa how to cook a little. She comes home right after school and helps make dinner while you are at your club.”
“Oh, is her rice still crunchy?”
“Just a little.”
Of course that was a joke. Mayuri-san had long wanted to teach her daughter how to cook, but she let me know that there was an incident when Chigusa was young…
It was the fabricated version of the story she had told me the night she showed me the scar. I pretended not to know about it, and simply expressed my consolation that such a thing happened to Chigusa. At no point was there any mention of the scar from Mayuri-san. Was she respecting her daughter’s privacy in that way? I hadn’t told her that I had seen Chigusa naked that night, and unless she said something to her mother, Mayuri-san shouldn’t be aware of that fact either.
“If you trust me to be alone here with only Chigusa’s cooking, then I’ll just have to endure.”
“It’s really not that bad!”
We joked about it, and then she got a little bit serious.
“I trust you Shota, but you’re also a young man, and I know I’ve been a bit much where she’s concerned, but if you get too lonely, I don’t mind if you get a little close with her if you need some affection.”
“Mayuri-san...”
“I’m not saying to sleep with her. I just mean… if you miss me badly and a phone call isn’t enough, it’s okay to ask her for a hug or a lap pillow. That’s all. She shouldn’t have to be punished for holding herself back, should she? She’s been taking care of her needs properly, so it should be alright.”
It sounded sketchy, and I’m familiar with the phrase when the cat’s away, the mice will play, though sadly the one with the real role of the cat has been me.
“Just to be sure, I’ll have a talk with her before I go to ease your mind… okay?”
I agreed to it, mainly for the sake of her taking care of her family. Normally you only get one family. I’ve been blessed with having a second thanks to Mayuri-san, but that luck was years apart, and being a widower with three children would make it difficult for any working man to find a new partner. I understood that much.
She would be leaving in two days. Her brother-in-law took care of the cost for the plane ticket even though I offered to pay, and the two days leading up to her departure were filled with taking care of all of my worldly desires.
And hers, too.
Chigusa and I had school the day of her flight, so while my wife had prepared us each a bento, she wouldn’t be home to greet me with a kiss for at least a week or so. I was a little on edge, but Chigusa really hadn’t behaved as erratically as she had in recent weeks. I could only hope there wouldn’t be an issue, and it would remain that way.
I could only hope...
