~~** Okazaki Nene’s Point of View **~~

How long has it been since I last woke up on this couch?

I had come to the only place I had left to run to.  A place I might not have even considered even going if he hadn’t reached out to me recently.  After she raised her hand to me, I knew it was over.

That was the one thing I wouldn’t endure, even for Kumi’s sake.

I knew she was a bit possessive of me.  But she always treated me well, and though Kumi was cautious around her, there was never any hostility.  I admit in the beginning I wasn’t sure how I would handle having a female lover, but she was caring and my needs were met.

It was a few years into our relationship when she said I didn’t need to work anymore.  She had a good job and she was always in a good mood when I had a hot meal waiting for her, and then myself, of course.  We would go out on the weekends to go shopping or catch a movie.  It was only a little jealousy from time to time if I made conversation with a woman who wasn’t her.

But what happened yesterday really threw me for a loop.

She made love to me a bit more violently than usual.  Then she got aggravated, saying she could smell another woman on me.  How?  The only woman I was near to was Mayuri-san, Shota’s wife, and only for a second when I showed her how to hit a cue ball a certain way.  It was friendly contact only, even the few pats on the butt we exchanged.  It never crossed any lines…

Though I apologized when I didn’t have to, she still raised her hand and slapped me hard across the face.  The moment she did, I clammed up.  It was like what I faced with my ex-husband all over again.  It wasn’t just one slap across the face, and there were also the threats that poured out of her  mouth.  It was the aspect of wanting to control me, like he did.  I wouldn’t have left her, and I certainly wouldn’t have betrayed her with another woman, but she had already made up her own mind about what I did, apparently, and she delivered the result to me, with explosive accuracy.

Then, as if it was a normal course of action, as if she hadn’t the slightest sense of guilt for having just struck me and triggering my longstanding trauma, she cuddled with me as usual, only adding that she’d be keeping a better eye on me from now on.

As if I’d let it get to that point!

I escaped domestic violence once, and I sure as hell won’t stick around for a second go at it.  I waited patiently for her to fall asleep.  I counted the minutes and every single one of her breaths until I heard the familiar pattern of her deep slumber, then I quickly got dressed, grabbed my purse and vital things, like my stamp, phone, and Kumi and my important documents.  I already had the spare key to the house Shota entrusted me with in my purse, so I hightailed it out of there to his place.

Kumi may lose some things, but I won’t let one of them be her mother.  Things can be replaced, after all, but you only get one mother, and I don’t want my Kumi to end up like Shota.  The loss of his parents… hit him impossibly hard.

“Are you awake now, Nene-san?”

A friendly and familiar voice greeted me just now, snapping me out of my waking thoughts.

“Mayuri…  Yes, I’m awake now.  Thanks for letting me stay the night.”

“It’s no trouble.  How are you feeling?”

“I’m hurt more emotionally than physically if that’s what you’re asking.”

“Are you hungry at all?  I made some breakfast and put aside some for you in case you woke up with an appetite.”

“Yeah, sure.  Can you help me sit up?”

Mayuri helped me to an upright position and after standing, I accompanied her into the kitchen where she had a delicious smelling breakfast waiting for me.  Shota really outdid himself, landing a wonderful woman like Mayuri as his real wife.

“Did… Shota say anything?”  I asked her.

“Yes, we… had a small talk while you were asleep. Shota suggested that he would look into possibly renting an apartment for you and Kumi-chan.  However, until then, he went along with my suggestion to have Chigusa sleep in our room for a while so you can take the spare bedroom for yourself.”

“You don’t have to go so far…”

“I know, but I want to.  Shota as well.  You’re our family, Nene-san.  I might only be a newlywed Tachibana, but I know Shota is fiercely loyal and protective towards his family.”

“Haah… now I’m intruding on his happiness.”

“Nonsense.  I also wouldn’t mind having some company my age around either, you know?  Shota doesn’t drink, smoke, watch a lot of television, or do anything people from our generation did.”

“Haha, that’s true, but not entirely correct.  He played video games all the time with Kumi and they would watch their television shows together as kids.  It wasn’t until his parents died that he sort of tuned everything out.  When he learned he had to budget tightly with the leftover insurance money, he buckled down and looked for a way to earn.  That’s why he’s always so focused on his writing."

I remember Shota first showing me how he slowly made more and more money writing some mind-numbing gibberish.  It never failed to impress me how he could find ways to earn money.  He was ever the provider, even when he was my little fake husband.

“So, you should probably send a message to Kumi-chan soon.  It’s already half past ten.”

“That late?  Ugh…”

She brought me my purse and I dug out my phone sending a relevant text to my daughter, letting her know I was okay and to call me as soon as she went to lunch.  When I finished eating her delicious breakfast, she took care of cleaning the dishes then sat down with me again.

“Shota said to get you whatever you need, so anytime you wish, we can go shopping for any necessities.  Please don’t mind the cost, as Shota said it wasn’t an issue.”

“Heh.”  I laughed.

“What is it?”

“It’s just like Shota to say that…  He’s too good for this world sometimes.”

“I wouldn’t say that.  He’s the kind of boy to knock up your teenage daughter when you aren’t looking, you know?”

“PFFFT~!”

“Ufufufufu~”

Mayuri was quick with a joke to make me feel better.

“Well, since you’re extending your hospitality to me for a while, please let me know what I can do to help out around here.”

“There’s nothing to do, but drink and watch some television, and maybe make lunch a little bit later.  Anything you’d like to eat?”

“Do you know how to cook Italian pasta?”

“Sure, we have all the ingredients for it.”

“I’d kill for something with a nice red sauce.  And a glass of wine to go with it.”

“Hmm… I’m afraid I can’t do the wine.  You’ve got your choice of Super Dry or Strong Zero, it’s the only alcohol I have on hand.”

“Then a Super Dry it is.  I need to be somewhat functional when I talk with Kumi after she gets home from school.”

We passed the time on my old green couch watching daytime television and yelling at the characters.  It seems I wasn’t the only one who liked to do that.  Mayuri already felt like a great friend, even though I had to show her this side of me already.

Kumi called on her lunch break and I told her what was going on, that I was safe at Shota’s house and that she could come here until we figured things out.  I thought she’d be angry with me, but instead she told me she was glad I left and to stay put. She’s more reliable at times then I am, and I imagine I have Shota to thank for that with all the time he spent with her.

But still, staying in this house again with all the memories I have already.  It wasn’t going to be easy on me.

The first resident to come home was Mayuri’s daughter, Chigusa.  She greeted me politely, and said I was free to use her room.  She was going to go ahead and move a few things over to Shota and Mayuri’s which was the master bedroom Himari and Arata used to reside in.

It really made it sink in that Shota was now the master of the house.  The bed in her room was the same one from that time, only the mattress was new.  It would be big enough for Kumi and I to share, so there were no problems there, really.

I had a perverse thought, that it should be Mayuri and I in Shota’s room and our two daughters sharing the other, since we were both his wives at one point in our lives.  I’m really a no-good woman when it comes down to it, having such empty and useless thoughts.  Besides, it’s been almost a decade since I had a man… I probably forgot how sex with one even goes!  I’d probably be a disappointment to Shota.

The next was Kumi who raced home as soon as possible, and came with her boyfriend Raita, who claimed to have visited her often, even though Mayuri stated she’d never met him before the other day.

And finally came Shota, with a young bookish-looking girl in tow right behind him.

“Nene-san, stay as long as you need.”

While I had gotten consolatory hugs from Mayuri and Kumi… it was Shota’s which finally put me at some level of ease.  I couldn’t help but wonder when he got to be so strong.  I mean he always was strong where it counted, but now he was a man.

A man, and not the little boy who could only struggle to fit in a man’s shoes.

And when I let him go from our hug, I truly knew the depths of despair that my life had succumbed to.

Mayuri had quickly modified her lunch plans and made a bit more spaghetti and in short order had taken care of feeding every single person in the house.  She really was so damn amazing…!

Shota introduced the girl I didn’t know as his friend from a school club who had the same hobby as him and came for some tips and writing advice.  Chigusa seemed to get along with her too.  Kumi and Raita quickly jumped onto Shota’s video game console and the house was filled with warmth.

With the kids all in the living room chattering, Mayuri invited me to join her in one of her favorite places.  The kitchen porch, where she let me lean against her for a little while.  Her hand gently rested on my leg, and while I knew she wasn’t gay or meant in that kind of way, I… enjoyed it.

For the first time in my life, I enjoyed the feel of a woman touching me.  I was calm and at peace in the place I most needed to be after all, and didn’t feel wary at all.

“Mayuri, what do you do for fun around here?”

“I haven’t had to look for that yet.  I keep myself occupied just fine with television during the day, and then getting passionately made love to every night by him.  However, if there’s something that interests you, we’ll be happy to support you.”

“I appreciate that.  I actually fell in love with flowers when I got the job on my way out of here the first time, and I wonder if I might make a little garden… say over there?”

I pointed to the perfect spot to plant some roses or the like.

“Mmh, That sounds lovely.”

“I’m just thinking of some things to keep me occupied while I try to get back on my feet.  I don’t want to be a burden on you, or in the way here any more than I already will be.”

“Nene-san, I would love nothing more than a friend my age right now to be around.  My best friend Kanna-chan, and heaven knows I love her so much, is someone I want to give some space to right now so her husband doesn’t have to worry about me always running to her when I get overwhelmed.”

“So you want a drinking buddy you can vent to?”

“Exactly.”

“…I can do that, as long as you don’t mind listening to a few war stories of my own.”

“As long as there is beer, that shouldn’t be a problem.”

At around six, Shota sent his friends home.  Kumi stayed behind with me of her own volition, I was actually fine if she wanted to stay with her boyfriend again even though she prioritized me, and we five went on a little shopping excursion.  We picked up some daily necessities at a drugstore and whatnot, then to a nearby clothing store where Chigusa and Kumi were looking at all sorts of fashionable things and I picked out one or two at Shota and Mayuri’s insistence.

Afterwards we returned home, and I helped Mayuri with making dinner even though the two girls managed to swindle a few snacks out of Shota while we were out.

Then it came time to go to sleep.  Once more into the room I stayed in long ago with Shota, this time only my daughter and I were there.  The bed was comfortable, but there was a missing piece.  We both looked at each other and understood we could never go back to that time where he shared it with us.

But we weren’t without him.

The walls were thin and we could hear everything, after all!

As I fell asleep though, my thoughts drifted not to Shota, but to Mayuri, and how her hand felt strangely welcome on my leg.  Dreaming about my ex-husband’s wife… I really am a no-good woman after all.
