Vel got in the first line, right in front of Franzen. The goblin looked at this master in awe as he looked at the hope that he brought with the coming of legendary weapons from the dragon guardian. It would change the war outcome, he and his fellow goblins believed that.
“My fellow countrymen, we have lost our comrades, our brothers and sisters, our lands, and our identities. But today, all will change. With the weapons from the dragon guardian, we’d be emerging from this way victorious!” Franzen gave his inspiring speech.
“HOORAH!” Arkarr shouted followed by the other ogres.
“The three of us will train you how to use these legendary weapons from the dungeon guardians. Lyka will train the denizens, Arkarr will train the ogres, and I’ll personally train the goblins. Is that clear enough, ladies and gentlemen?” Franzen asked.
“All hail our lord!” Vel raised his hand in the air and shouted with all of his power.
“And Vel, from here and out, please call me sergeant,” Franzen said.
“Sure thing, Sergeant,” Vel said, even though he didn’t know what sergeant meant in the first place. However, he felt a little bit comfortable saying that instead of my lord every time he saw Franzen. Well, only time would tell.
“Now form a line!” Franzen shouted. All of a sudden, The denizens formed a line, followed by the ogres, and lastly, the goblins. Arkarr stood in front of the ogre, Lyka stood in front of the denizens, and goblins stood in front of Franzen.
The air became rather tense, especially after that previous shout. However, Vel and the others pumped their chest up high after hearing the promises coming from their lord. For them, it was a glimpse that they might be able to win the war against humans.
“Today will be the day you all be turned into a man! We are no longer the weak demonic army, we’ll become stronger than ever and take back our land! I’m your officer, I will not accept any response but yes sir, or no sir! Understand that!” Franzen shouted.
Vel felt that his lord got more charismatic and confident all of a sudden. He came to him as a quiet chest player more than anything, but now, he looked like the proper demonic lord that he hoped for. No more compromise with humans, they’d strike them down with the new weapons that their lord had brought for them.
“Yes sir!” Vel shouted.
“Goblins, follow me. Denizens, follow Corporal Lyka, and Ogre, follow Corporal Arkarr,” Franzen said as he walked towards one of the trucks. Vel followed him from behind alongside the other goblins. Jaran walked side-by-side with Vel, following the pale demon from behind.
From the truck, Franzen pulled out a green crate. He opened the crates, filled with clothing with the same color as the one that Franzen used. “This is called Operational Camouflage Pattern, and this would be your standard uniform.”
Vel grabbed one package of one of the uniforms. It was wrapped in this somewhat invincible layer of material that felt smooth to be touched but made this crack noise. He tried opening it slowly, making sure not to break the packaging. “Don’t mess with the plastic cover, trainees!” Franzen shouted.
Vel just nodded and immediately changed into the pair of uniforms that Franzen gave to him. It was the extra small size, but it was quite an upgrade in comparison to the loose clothing that he wore as a goblin. He also changed his leather boot into the thick leather-ly boots that Franzen gave him. It felt way more comfortable than the mere leather boots that he usually wore.

“XS, what does it mean?” Jaran asked Vel about the small white fabric stamped on the internal of the clothes.
“I don’t know,” Vel shook his head as he wore the military cap on his head. However, Vel assumed that it was for extra small because after all, a goblin was one of the smallest humanoid creatures, only seconded by the dwarves. Even in large numbers, humans considered them not to be dangerous.
“Now, trainees, you all will be given the main weapon, each one of you will be given an M4A1 carbine, like the one that Corporal Lyka is carrying,” Franzen pointed his hand at the strange-looking crossbow that Lyka was carrying all along. “And please, this is called a rifle, not crossbow, alright?” Franzen pointed at his rifle.
Vel picked up the black rifle from the crate. In comparison to his longbow, it was lighter, that was for sure, and it was somehow easier to handle with his delicate small hands. Where was the arrow for the crossbow, though? For Vel, it didn’t have any arrow whatsoever.
“I’ll help you familiarize yourself with the current weapon system that we’ll be using, mainly the M4 that you’ll be using, and since neither of you has ever used this thing, I’ll teach you basic firearms safety and cleaning drills before we go on shooting,” Franzen said.
Vel just nodded. The black rifle that he currently held was not something that he expected to be given to a mere goblin, like him. Even though Franzen tried his best not to make goblins to be second-class citizens, the number of goblins during the beginning of the crusade against the demonic army was so massive that equipping all of them was simply impossible.
Franzen walked to one of the empty sections inside the wooden fortress. The ogres were told to close the fortress gate first before training. Franzen’s goal was to teach them fire discipline and weapon operation first. After that, they could go to tactics to modify their old tactics that involved a human rush against their enemies.
Vel, as a commander, knew that goblins were more disposable than other citizens of the demonic army, but that strategy almost cost him his own life. It was the old doctrine, though, changed immediately after the commander of the goblin army got decimated by the heroes from the human side. The change of doctrine from Franzen was too late back then.
As said previously, humans managed to rush to the demonic capital so quickly that restructuring was not possible. By the time the information about the invasion reached the capital, the human was only three towns away and surrounded the demonic kingdom from all sides.
“Alright, first of all, never ever point your weapons at the thing that you are not planning to shoot! NEVER!” Franzen gave the command. Vel nodded and told the other goblins not to aim their rifle at Franzen. To think again, Franzen wore armor, didn’t he? “And you owe me a punishment for aiming that rifle at me.”
Ven suddenly shivered. Punishment from his lord? It couldn’t have been something good. If it was flogging, it would be bad. “You owe me a run around the whole fortress for that, Vel, and Vel only!” Franzen said. “It should be a reminder to you all not to sacrifice your own team leader!”
Vel let out his breath, it was not flogging, thankfully. It was quite common for flogging to be a form of punishment for ogres, denizens, or goblins. It didn’t matter, if you made a mistake, you’d be flogged by your commanders which had been a constant culture for years. Franzen rarely enforced it, though.
“Second, treat your rifle as if it is loaded, just like you don’t point your crossbow at your own head!” Franzen added again. It was basic information, any goblins would know about it. They weren’t as dumb as humans made them be. However, with this strange new tool, it didn’t help Vel that the others started peeking into the holes in the front of the rifle.
“Vel, because of your squad mistake, Jaran owes me a run alongside you,” Franzen added.
Jaran looked at Vel. The bald goblin just nodded. “That’s all, next, I’ll teach you how to clean your guns. Gather around me, and Vel, I need to borrow your rifle.” Franzen approached Vel and grabbed the rifle from Vel. The goblins sat around their demonic lord.
