Sasha laid sprawled out on her back atop the hotel bed, breathing heavily, her body tense and sore. Despite the pain she managed to raise her head and frantically begun scouring the walls, she found some relief upon noticing that the walls here were not covered in the crawling pests like her dorm. The relief would be short lived however, as she tried to rise from the bed she found that the body aches from yesterday had worsened and she struggled to move enough to even roll over. The bite mark on her inner thigh was throbbing and was sore even without any touch and the discomfort she felt yesterday wasn't exclusive to her bite anymore, it had spread all across her body, a slight but constant ache deep in her bones, it reminded her of the growing pains she had had when she was going through puberty, but these pains went all through her body. Up her legs, down her arms, around her neck, there were everywhere. Sharp pains and cramps plagued her stomach as well. Sasha was exhausted, the stress of the week and these mysterious pains had drained her, she laid in bed most of the day trying to work up the self-will to get up and out of bed.
As the day slowly faded into the late afternoon Sasha managed will herself up out of bed and force herself to take a shower, the warm water spilling down over her body helped to relief some of the aching in her bones and the cramping in her stomach.
Sasha did not have the time to pack a bag or grab any of her possessions when she fled the dorm, she realized now that she hadn't taken any clothes or even her phone with her. So she wrapped herself up in one of the hotel's robes and sat down on the bed, flicking through day time TV she tried her best to ignore all that was going on, but every time she managed to forget for a moment the spider bite would pulsate or a sharp pain would strike in her lower abdomen or a glimpse of the hills would catch the corner of her eye and it would all come rushing back to her.
As the sun set behind the hills of Arbor Sasha grew more and more uneasy, she had been replaying the dreams over and over in her head, no matter how many times she told herself it was "just a dream" she couldn't shake the thought that maybe it wasn't, it had all felt so real to her. Her cramps begun to cause her to more and more concern as the pain she was feeling more and more resembled the pain she had felt giving birth to that unnatural swarm in her dream. Rationale and common sense left her mind, fear that perhaps the dreams were real and she was carrying some fiendish arachnid swarm occupied all of her mind. Hours passed and only one choice of action seemed right to Sasha, she knew she had to get a pregnancy test.
With no other option Sasha put the unwashed dress from the night before back on and left the hotel in search of a pharmacy. She was tired and in what seemed like never ending pain, she struggled to walk down the street, her bones felt weak and seemed to buckle slightly under her weight. Inside the pharmacy the bright fluorescent light stung her eyes, black spots and shadows invaded her periphery. She thought she saw spiders scurrying about everywhere, but when she would turn to face them, they would vanish.
Sasha managed to get the test and make it back to the hotel, hurrying into her room she rushed straight for the bathroom. The events of the past couple of days had not been good for Sasha's self-care, trying to pee she realized she couldn't, thinking back she couldn't recall the last time she had drank any water. Stumbling bow legged across the bathroom she turned the bathroom sink tap on all the way and nearly wrapped her mouth around the faucet. She sputtered and coughed up water every few seconds but continued to drink until she could not physically swallow anymore. Close to ten agonizing minutes passed before Sasha could finally brings herself to urinate, the next two minutes waiting for the results were even more agonizing. "One line is negative, two is positive." Sasha reminded herself.
Looking at the test Sasha was relieved to not see two lines but concerned when she didn't see any line at all. Sasha picked the box out from the trash and scoured it looking for any information on what no lines meant, she read the entire box twice over but there was no information on no lines. She checked the expiry date, hoping that maybe the test itself was faulty, but it was in date, there was nothing wrong with the test.
Sasha thought about going back and getting another pregnancy test or going down to the hotel's business centre and searching online what no lines on the test meant, but her body betrayed her. A sharp stab came through the spider bite and echoed throughout her body, the aches in her bones became more severe and Sasha collapsed to the floor. Her bones felt almost as though they were separating, splintering apart from the inside, jagged bones fragments stabbing at her muscle and skin from the inside. With all her might she pulled herself along the floor and up onto the bed, rolling over onto her back and laying as motionless as possible. The pains continued to worsen and she could not move, she had not thought to close the curtains and now as she laid there overcome with pain she couldn't help but look out at the hills knowing that when sleep eventually came for her she would be up amongst them once again with all the horrors they held. Tears rolled down her cheeks as the city lights gradually faded through the night and sleep eventually found her. Ll
