The stranger pulled Merille along, down a quiet street. Buildings and lamp posts blurred by as their footsteps echoed hollowly on cobbles, glistening in night dews. Her mind was in a daze after that passionate kiss and she was barely coherent of their direction.

The kisses with Samuel and Jerald were nice. Even Cedrick’s unanticipated advance gave her a pleasant surprise. But this kiss was different. It was intoxicating. It was sweet. It was fire. She wanted more of the blonde’s softness and warmth. Craved it even.

Her finger came up to her lips, pressing lightly. Her heart was still pounding from the experience. What was that? she thought as her legs moved with the tugging force of the other woman.

Heat bloomed in her loin and wetness seeped between her legs. An urge to stop the stranger and kiss her again. To entangle herself with the blue-eyed woman. To taste her more thoroughly. To savor the warmth and softness of her body.

They turned into a building and trudged up the stairs. Merille did not know how many flights she went up before they eventually came to a stop in front of a room. Clinking of keys and a click later, the door swung open and she was pulled inside.

“Wow! That was a close one.” The blonde blew out a breath, chuckling as she turned on the lamp on the nightstand next to a large bed.

Merille glanced dazedly around the sparsely decorated space before finding those mesmerizing blue eyes again. Her violet gaze drifted down to the plump, pink lips and she gulped. A surge of desire nearly made her lunge for the woman and tasted her one more time.

What am I thinking?! I’m not here for this! She chided herself, shaking herself back to senses.

“What the fuck was that back there?!” the merc asked, forcing anger to her voice as her finger pointed in a vague direction of the warehouse.

“A distraction.” The blue-eyed woman shrugged.

“A distraction?! We could have run or hide in the shadows. Why the fuck did you do that?”

“Trust me, running is the last thing you want to do. Kurt had the guards in that area under his thumb. Anything suspicious gets reported to him right away,” she said.

Her lips pressed tightly together as she tried to come up with a retort. Nothing came. It was a sound argument and the stranger seemed to know what she was doing. She must not have lied about staking out at the warehouse for two months.

A mischievous smile curled on the other woman’s lips as she eyed the merc with amusement. “I don’t know why you’re complaining. You were pretty into it back there. I’d say you were even enjoying yourself.”

Furious heat bloomed on her cheeks before burning across the rest of her body. She clenched her jaw and snarled, “Whatever. I’m leaving!”

“Wait!” the stranger blurted. “C’mon, I’m only teasing. Light'n up a bit, would ya? We really should work together.”

“I told you it’s dangerous and I don’t need you to increase the risk,” she said flatly.

“Trust me, two is better than one when you’re up against a warehouse full of mercs. You can’t think you’d take them all down by yourself,” the blonde pleaded.

“And what makes you think that the two of us can take them all out? I remember you being as useless in a fight as any damsel on the street,” she smirked.

Now, it was the blonde’s turn to fume and blush. “Fine, I can’t fight! But I’m useful in other ways, you know. I got us away from the guard suspicion free, remember?” she countered.

“That was a stupid move. We were lucky he was a prude,” Merille said, crossing her arms over her nearly exposed breasts.

The other woman wagged a finger in front of her as if to say You’re wrong. “At least a third of people in this city are followers of the Church of Radiance.

“The Church of Radiance?”

“Yup! They called it a religion. They believe in the afterlife and rebirth. That death isn’t the end. Your misdeeds are punished in the afterlife and you’ll be reborn only once you’ve served your punishment.”

The blonde saw the confusion on her face and a broad smile stretched her lips. “And lust is considered a misdeed in their teaching so public display of affection is a no no,” she said before blowing a kiss at the petite merc, coaxing warmth to her cheeks.

“Th-That’s just…just idiotic!” she spluttered.

Though she had heard many changes occurred in Rondelle after the rebuild, this was the first time she heard about the Church of Radiance and their bizarre beliefs.

Death was as final as anything could get.

Once you were dead, everything ended. There was no coming back from it.

And the idea of being punished for your misdeeds in the afterlife made the punishment felt like an afterthought. Someone like Kurt needed to receive his judgment right now, not wait until he died of old age decades from now.

His suffering became pointless when he could do as he pleased when no one knew he suffered.

“I think the religion was founded about seven years ago by a scholar and it quickly gained popularity amongst the people here,” the blonde said, tapping her chin. “People were poor and desperate after the rebuild so they bought into it pretty easily.”

The stranger shrugged then strolled toward another smaller bed on the far side of the room and stripped off her cloak. Merille could not help but gawk at her voluptuous figure beneath. The other woman was petite with shapely arms and legs in her form-fitting clothing.

The light blue linen of her shirt strained to contain the incredibly swell of her breasts before cropping out just below her ribcage to expose her slender waist. Her pale, smooth skin seemed to glimmer in the light.

“I’m Revinne, by the way. What’s your name?” the blue-eyed woman said, tossing the cloak on the bed then turning to face her.

Merille had to force her jaw close and pulled her gaze upward. A knowing smile curled on Revinne’s lips, making her blush once again. “M-Merille,” she said finally.

Her violet eyes moved down to the far side bed before she was reminded of the larger one on this side of the room. It was rumpled and blotted with faint stains while the other one looked neat and clean.

Why would she have two beds in her room? she questioned the strangeness of the setup but quickly tossed it aside for more pressing matter. Not my problem, is it? I should be thinking of a way to get into the warehouse. Her brows creased at the dead end she was facing.

Barging in through the front gate was clearly out of the question. The constant patrol and barbed wire atop the parameter also made it impossible to scale the walls. She would disguise herself as a whore but there was a high chance Kurt’s men already knew her face.

Curiosity piqued her mind as she eyed Revinne. The blonde had wanted to work together. She had also staked out at the warehouse for some time. Given the wit she showed on the street earlier, she might actually have something useful to share.

The petite merc ground her teeth as she contemplated asking for help. The task was truly beyond her ability to pull off alone. That was a fact. But the blue-eyed woman was practically a stranger.

From her experience, trusting someone she met barely ten minutes ago with her life was always a bad decision.

Being a mercenary taught her to not trust others. No life was more important than their own. was an unspoken rule in this line of work. And it held true after all these times. Putting one’s life in another's hands oftentimes led to betrayal and death.

The information Revinne would give her could have been false as well. It might take her straight into a trap Kurt had set up. After Todd sold her out, even if he had a good reason, she became skeptical of information she did not gather herself.

And even if the blonde was true to her word and really knew how to get inside the warehouse undetected. Merille did not want to involve another innocent person in this fight when two others had already suffered because of her.

If they both got captured by Kurt, death was probably the last thing they would have to worry about. He had taken massive losses from several Lilac shipments she destroyed. He would undoubtedly try to make use of her whichever ways he could to earn that money back.

One of those ways would likely include whoring her out to brothels in the city. She could not allow Revinne to suffer such a fate if it ever came to pass.

I should just leave and find a way on my own. I should still have enough time to work on Kurt’s men to get what I need, she thought.
