The cold of the rainy night seemed to have seeped deep into the ground as it was wet, muddy, and damp, uncomfortable for the foot to step on. It was probably the dampest night of the year and nobody dared go out of their safe and warm haven, for those having home and fire, at the very least.

However, for a certain someone, it wasn’t the case at all.

In the dark alleyway far from the well-lit town, a silhouette of a girl was seen leaning her back against the dirty wall. It was pouring down, albeit not hard, yet her lips were chapped and shivering tremendously.

Slowly, she raised her right arm that looked so thin and malnourished up to the starless night sky and softly murmured, “Mother… I will come over there soon… Please, wait for me…”

Her voice was so weak and almost unheard. Before long, the girl’s arm fell on her forehead and slipped down to her eye sockets, completely covering them. Her expressions stiffened, as tears started to run down her sunken, pale cheeks.

She was reminded of her own life story which she had never felt happy about after her mother left her for good around 2 years before. From the beginning, she and her mother had never led a fulfilling life, but at least they were happy with each other’s company.

She never knew her father’s face and never once regretted that. For her, her mother was all she ever needed.

She remembered how hard her mother had worked to keep her tummy fed, albeit it didn’t always result in her mother bringing food back to their small hut near the landfill everyday. There had been times they only ate a small portion of cheap dried jerky, and they already felt grateful for just being able to eat. And there had also been times when the girl had to contain her hunger and could only eat the day after.

The girl was taught by her own life to accept what was given to her, unconditionally.

Perhaps that’s what turned her personality cowardly, too accepting, and meek. And as a result, she was lying down helplessly under the rain in the middle of the night due to starvation, pathetically, she thought.

Her chest tightened at the thought of her last moment without company as it stirred more negative emotions to surface.

The girl began to hate her life.

She recalled the one time when she had to scratch for left-over food from the dumpsters and only found rotten veggies. She knew it wasn’t meant to be eaten by humans, but her life was far more important. In the end, she braced herself and ate the whole thing while crying the whole night.

She then started to hate her fate.

What if she was born in a normal, happy family? Would there be any difference from her current life?

Questions whose answers were never destined for her to find filled her head, and it only made her dying heart grow even more weary.

More memories flashed up in her mind and she was unable to contain her own emotions. With the last ounce of energy left in her body, the girl broke down in silence. Only tears were seen flowing down from her eyes. No sound. No sobs. No nothing.

She withstood her voice from leaking out, thinking that it was useless for a nobody like her to even wish to live.

Her sight grew duller little by little as she was no longer able to even lift a finger. The coldness of her surroundings could not beat the cold she felt deep inside her heart. She felt quite terrible, knowing nobody was with her even in her last moment.

Her heart beat slowed down and her senses weakened at a tremendous speed. She felt drowsy, but she knew it wasn’t the drowsiness she had always felt when tired. It was her life coming to an end. And when she could no longer feel the weak thumping from her heart, she would close her eyes and rested her arms on top of her stomach.

This time only, on her verge of dying, the girl finally had her own way to express what she had truly been feeling in her life. “This world… I hate it. It’s so cruel… to… me…”

Together with her last words, the girl drew her last breath. She felt almost nothing when her soul departed out from her body, only the tingling feelings spreading from her fingertips to all parts of her body

“...”

A moment later, the girl’s body trembled horribly. She squirmed profusely, followed by her back arching in such an impossible angle for the human body to bend.

Sounds of bones cracking and teeth gnashing on each other filled her surroundings. Thankfully, it was pouring down so there was no one to hear those abominations of sounds coming from her.

“Urgh…”

The girl tried to open her eyes but she couldn’t. Her body was still convulsing repeatedly as if it was sitting on an electric chair. However, the senses she had lost returned back to her.

Slowly, the girl became able to hear the rustling sound from the racing up raindrops to the ground and wore a pained expression across her face.

After her hearing returned and her body stopped convulsing, the girl was able to smell and forced her way to breathe. It was painful, but at least she breathed again. With her ability to breathe came back, the girl slowly raised her right arm up and clenched. With all her might, she launched her fist towards her own left chest, pounding her own heart to make it start beating from the outside.

The first pound wasn’t successful so she took another deep breath, raised her arm again, and punched a little bit harder than before. Her heart thumped once, but unfortunately, it then stopped with no continuation. The second one was also not successful and the girl’s face went even much purpler than before.

She gritted her teeth and, thanks to that she forcibly opened her eyes before launching the possibly last punch of her. This time, she felt a great shock inside her chest and miraculously, her heart began to beat again.

Frantically, the girl went into full panicking mode and quickly sat cross-legged while touching her body all over.

“Did… Did it really work?” the girl threw a question to herself, still looking pretty baffled and bewildered. The girl then pinched her cheek and felt the pain. A moment later, a wide grin took over her face as she sighed in relief. “Phew! Thought I failed again!”

After that, she turned her gaze to her surroundings and arose from her sitting position. At the same time, the rain stopped and the sky began to clear up.

The girl stared upwards and spotted a star shining dimly beneath the lumps of dark clouds. She smiled a little and gleefully trotted towards the deeper part of the alleyway.

Along the way, the girl shifted her gaze towards her right and left a few times over, trying to adapt to the dark ambience of that place. Slowly, she grew accustomed to the dark and could see more clearly.

“Whoa… Nothing can beat the power of youth.” The girl spouted out completely in awe of her natural ability to adapt to the environment. She then stopped her legs and pulled the cloak down to make it easier for her to see her surroundings.

And the first thing she retorted about was, “I didn’t really see it before but… damn, this body’s so thin! Has she been eating nothing but dirt or what?”

With a disappointed look on her face, the girl continued to inspect herself. She wasn’t that tall, and not a midget either. Average, if she were to say about her height.

However, her weight was kind of insufficient and she completely knew it was due to how malnutritioned her body looked.

“What do I do now? Should I just discard this body and look for another one…?” The girl pondered as the words escaping from her lips were so irrational and incomprehensible. She took quite a bit of time thinking and when she was done, she clicked her tongue and convinced herself, “Tsk. Nah. That’ll be too much of a hassle. Don’t know how long it’ll take to find another suitable body that I can slip myself in this easily in the future…”

She shrugged her arms in resignation before saying, “Anyway… There’s no one around here, right?” After making sure that she was ultimately alone and no one was spotted in the vicinity, the girl jumped backwards and leaned her back against the wall and began making strange gestures with her fingers. “Oh! It’s really working! Don’t mind if I do, then.”

The girl curled her lips and confidently muttered, “Status.”

*Beep!*

Together with the sudden beeping sound, a semi-transparent holographic window appeared out of thin air in front of the girl. It glitched for a few times before showing numerous characters divided in columns and rows.

The girl’s eyes that were still covered by her wet bangs widened in surprise after a quick scan on the entire window.

“This… This is…”
