The atmosphere was intense as both Orinda and I interlocked our gazes without doing anything much. I didn’t know about her, but I knew she was planning on something, until she raised her burning lance up and started singing her chant beautifully.
“Sunken deep beneath the scorched earth;
The fire engulfing molten sulfur and metals;
Burn, burn, burn, and flame ablaze;
Show all lives your—”
The longer Orinda chanted, I could sense more mana in our surroundings distorted and pulled forcibly towards her and the lance she wielded. It was easy for me to know since this body had such sensitivity to sense the movement of mana around me. It resulted in my skin having goosebumps all over, though.
The temperature also rose quite considerably, proven by the breeze that had gotten warm, as beads of sweat rolled down from her forehead.
Well, Orinda was really focused so probably she herself didn’t realize it.
It was quite fascinating to see others show off their capabilities like this, while also assessing their firepower and arranging the most suitable countermeasure against it. Truly, I was correct about her talents. She was a genius, and her passion made up for it.
However, ironically, she possessed one fatal flaw for a full-fledged magus.
8 seconds had passed and her invocation still hadn’t finished yet. In a real battle, it didn’t even need 5 seconds for one’s opponent to have the chance of lopping their head off. Especially in a battle between magi, a single moment of negligence could lead one to die the most painful death imagined.
Nevertheless, I was so curious about what kind of magic Orinda would perform so I deliberately waited for it. Otherwise, I could have finished the fight by crunching her sturdy-looking body with earth magic before she could even open her mouth. It was that simple to kill someone with magic.
“ —Liquify the ground below me!
Inferno Gush!”
At last, she was done with her spell and stomped her lance. In that instant, a huge amount of mana was injected into the ground, causing the whole place to shake tremendously. Along with the smug smile across her face, Orinda looked so satisfied and immediately started to prepare her next spell in advance.
The smell of burning metals quickly filled the atmosphere, together with the pungent stench of sulfur. The ground was still shaking, and it grew even fiercer over time; and ended with countless fountains of red lava gushing forth through the small cavities made by the tremor from before.
The sea of lava laid bare in my sight, as it came waving to me at a speed that shouldn’t be underestimated at all. It was by no means fast, but not slow as well. If a normal person were to run from it, the lava would catch up in about 20 or 30 seconds. Plenty of time to save themselves, barely.
She went strong from the start? Good judgment.
Compared to the time when I was still on the dark alleyway, today’s me was at my highest peak of performance. I wasn’t hungry and tired, with the addition of my mental stability having well rested after taking a proper nap. In conclusion, I am much stronger and focused than before.
Lightly swinging the short-sword downwards, I created a small footing for me to stand about 1 meter above the lava surface by solidifying my wind magic. It also functioned as a heat protector for my soles, reflecting the hot air back to where it came from.
I still had some time to spare so I glanced at the audience. Surprisingly enough, none of them was running in the face of a disastrous magic like this. The damage caused by a small eruption of lava shouldn’t be taken lightly, yet they all seemed calm, enjoying the fight between me and Orinda by cheering and clapping their hands.
It then came to my line of sight where Risa was actually no longer in her seat. Rather, she was standing firmly right outside the ring while carrying a shield made of stone. I squinted my eyes as I caught a glimpse of a strange and thin, myriad-colored layer stretching out from the shield.
The moment the lava touched the layer, it immediately prevented the lava from spreading as if hitting an almost invisible wall surrounding the entire ring in the shape of a barrel.
A magic barrier, huh? Quite the strong one… I remember her calling that the ‘Aegishjalmur’ or something. Gotta ask her about that later…
I got distracted for a moment and immediately reverted my attention back to its original place, as I thought of how to stop the sea of lava which gushed out nonstop this whole time. Not long after, I was already up with the most efficient countermeasure for this.
People might think that water is the best substance to extinguish fire while in fact, it’s not the case at all, especially in a case where lava is involved. The process will only leak out gasses made of minuscule crystal shards and raw sulfur which are really dangerous for living organisms to inhale. It was a mixture of poison and deadly dust, simply put.
Instead, in Elise’s original world, they have those red tubes filled with liquified carbon dioxide called the fire extinguishers. And that would be my main approach to this scenario.
What I needed to do was collect the basaltic particles from the ground around us as much as possible, mix it with the carbon dioxide extracted from the air, reform it to small grains of salt, and rain down the lava with it. However, it would be too dangerous and without the proper amount of mana, it would lead to a huge explosion.
And I didn’t want that.
The process might look confusing, but not for me. I had the knowledge, mana, and control. Hence, it was relatively easy for me to do.
As soon as I raised my left hand, the process instantly started as black specks of basaltic dust soared to the sky as if there was no gravity. Lumps of dark grey clouds were formed by those specks above the whole training grounds. It was none other than the sedimentation of salt particles, not water.

Before long, the bright, sunny day changed to a dark, cloudy noon.
“Controlling the weather… Is she controlling the weather!? How!?”
I could hear Orinda stopping her chant and yelling that line amidst the chaotic roars of thunder and clamors from the audience. It was to be expected, though. Even I myself was surprised by how grandiose this scenery was unveiled. And that was not the end at all.
This is just a simple procession magic, by the way… All thanks to Elise’s memories.
I puffed out my chest and intentionally used the heightened voice I had performed last night, “Close your eyes, Orinda. You don’t want salt in your eyes.”
“Eh…!?” She flinched and immediately crouched down, obediently.
“Good girl. Maybe next time you should go all out when facing me.”
With a single flick from my fingers, the clouds exploded, raining down the entire arena with a seemingly endless amount of white salt grains. At a glance, it looked like it was snowing. But when the flakes made contact with the burning lava, no crystal shard was made, nor the poisonous sulfuric gas as well.
Slowly, the salt rain began to overwhelm the sea of lava. Sizzles and small pops on its surface were the only things heard and seen. And before long, the red, scorching ground was replaced by a vast tar-like liquid which quickly solidified.
After confirming that it was no longer hot to be stepped on, I jumped down. I absorbed too much mana from my surroundings, and the after effects began to take their toll on my body. Well, the fight is already over so I won’t need to exert my body any more than this.
Perhaps it was due to her hearing me landing on the ground, Orinda immediately stood up and threw her lance up to the sky.
“It’s not over yet, Elise!” she shouted eagerly, spinning her body once and making a V gesture using her hands. “You said I should go all out, right? Then… Come forth, Laevateinn!”
My heart thumped so hard, followed by a nauseating sensation in my stomach. It was the physical signs I always got whenever something troublesome would arise. Unfortunately, my gut instinct kept telling me to look upwards too, and when I did, the burning lance wasn’t there.
No, it was more appropriate to say that the lance was quickly descending at a tremendous speed and impaled Orinda right at her chest.
“Orinda!” I screamed with all my might as fresh blood spurted out like a fountain.
That kid…! What is she doing!? What a waste of talent and resources!
I panicked and discarded both my staff and short-sword away, running towards her direction frantically. Unexpectedly, the other girls didn’t seem to bother. Instead, all of them looked so exhilarated beyond reason. I almost questioned their sanity when I suddenly felt the drastic rise in temperature and stopped my legs.
And then, it happened…
A tornado made of crimson colored fire engulfed and enveloped Orinda’s impaled figure and I got slightly blown away from the force of the gust caused by it. Thankfully, I could stop myself from collapsing backwards by kicking the ground and making a firm stance.
Realizing that the wind was extremely hot, I channeled my mana through my entire body to freeze the surroundings. But alas, it was only enough to stop the hot breeze from burning my skin only, while I could still feel the heat down to my core.
[Warning! Níðhǫggr is angered by the individual: Orinda Ir’Logi for having used her blessing [Ruler of Inferno - Laevateinn] against its Prophetess.]
[Níðhǫggr is encouraging you to punish the individual: Orinda Ir’Logi for her insolent actions.]
What!?
As if the sudden notification wasn’t enough to surprise me, in between the gaps of my arms which I used to shield my face from the heat with, my eyes laid upon a hazy object beneath the tornado of fire. And when the fire finally dispersed, a small figure of a girl showed its existence.
A pair of flaming, webbed wings exhibiting fury and ferociousness; her twin, red horns were much, much intimidating and bigger than before; the thorny tail smoldering in red licks of flames; and a body covered in sturdy red scales while still keeping her delicate features.
“Manifestation, complete!” The girl uttered and waved her burning lance which looked more gruesome than earlier to the side, creating fire sparks in its course. “Let’s go for round two, Elise! Ready or not, I’m comiii… Wait! Before that…”
Orinda coated her dragon-like body with mana, just as I had taught her a little while ago. As a result, her atmosphere, presence, and even her pressure doubled… No. It tripled. She got stronger 3 times from before, to the point I didn’t even need to use my serpent eyes to look at her status to know that.
“Okay. I’m done! Let’s continue!”
And with that, Orinda charged her lance with her mana too, as my kindness of teaching her a simple defense-enhancement magic backfired.
