He began tapping the wooden desk as if he was checking for something.
A few minutes passed, and he finally strayed from his still position as he glanced up at the butler.
"The government is on their way here," The man says, and just after he clicked his tongue, his index finger briskly punctured the wooden desk.
It looked as if a bullet had shot through it as he lifted it out of the hole.
"Would you like me to recall the other family members?" The butler asks.
"No… Let them come. They will be a good example for me to set,"
…
(Lucy POV)
We walked down the barren streets with our respected masks on.
Our breathing was heavy yet calm as the full face mask we wore stifled our breathing by just a hint.
It wasn't enough for it to hinder us in a fight, but it was enough to make breathing just a little bit harder, especially in the present tense situation.
In the distance, the beeping of a car rung in the silent air.
Even the rain seemed to have been drowned out as we were in the zone, slowly walking towards the Write families mansion.
Whenever we caught a glimpse of some of the family members, we avoided them as we didn't want any unnecessary trouble. Still, we also noticed that the government wanted to retake at least the central part of New York.
It seemed like a decent plan as it is hard to make a base on an uneven playing field.
There are also some other factors, such as not getting every angle of the battlefield, but to sum it up, if the Write family loses their central base, which is the head's mansion, we can retake New York relatively quickly.
"Should we help out the government?" A distorted voice asks.
It was a mix of a low and high tone fused with a slight hint of robotic.
Everybody looked around, unable to identify who asked the question.
"No, we'll use them as bait," I reply with my voice also distorted, causing the girls to look around and try to find who the speaker was.
"Focus," Another voice says, causing the girls to snap their heads into position.
We continued down the street towards the center of New York, but not long after we finished conversing, we saw a group of government workers past a thick cloud of condensation.
I signaled for us to move around, so we scaled the building beside us and watched from the rooftop above.
Dungeon runners, huh? It seems they've hired them as mercenaries or something.
It wasn't just her natural beauty, but the sparks of tan lighting mixed with hints of purple flashed around her.
They helped fend back any other workers who tried to hit on her or make general conversation.
"That's another level of safety," Somebody says from behind me, in a distorted voice, once again.
It seems I also wasn't the only one who noticed her.
"What family is she from?" I ask.
"The Whix family," Clio, who was beside me, replied.
I could tell it was from her because of her mask, and I was actually able to tell where the voice came from.
"The Whix family, huh? The one with the illness?" Somebody asks.
As soon as the person behind me asked their question, two uncontrollable dungeon runners walked right up into her face and stared down at her.
The clap of a fist colliding with skin rung through the air for a few seconds, and we all noticed the girl with tan hair and eyes was sent flying across the street.
The government workers quickly restrained the dungeon runners, and for their final mark, they spat on her, which she seemed to be unable to dodge.
"They have heredity-waning blindness. I don't know if it has a name, but basically, it causes all members of the family to become blind once they hit 20 years old,"
"They start off with pretty bad eyesight, but they use medicine to help regain it for a bit. Though it's not a permanent solution, it lets them live a life without glasses for a while. Then once they become legally blind, they take stronger medications… until they become fully blind," Clio finishes off one of the other girls' comments.
"I see… but she seems to be about our age? Why does she seem fully blind now?"
"I dunno," Somebody from behind me says.
I turn around, only to see the rest of the girls shrug.
Well, she's the least of our concerns now…
The government workers seemed to have finished gathering everybody they wanted and set out towards the Write headquarters, less than a mile away.
Their numbers were in the hundreds, and it seemed even the military rolled in… Though they weren't as powerful or influential as they used to be.
They were pretty much dungeon runners as they go into dungeons… but work for somebody rather than themselves.
Guilds are a thing but they aren't that popular unless you're hoping to get a free carry through a dungeon… which rarely happens.
"We'll move with the crowd. It's better to keep our masks on and do not get into any fights amongst the dungeon runners. If we do… Just use the hivemind, and we'll all retreat," I order before disappearing towards the back of the crowd.
We could easily dissolve into the group due to our abnormal heights for our age, making most people think we were young ȧduŀts… especially Mia, as she was a clean 6 foot.
Suddenly, as we were almost at the mansion, I felt a tap on my shoulder.
"Excuse me, if you need help, I can ȧssist you," A calming voice says.
It was the girl from the Whix family, and it seemed her eyesight mainly had returned. She was also about half an inch taller than me.
Chinese? I can't tell… maybe she's mixed…
"Are you underestimating me?" I ask.
"I-I'm sorry,"
It seems she realized how old I am.
"*sigh*... Did all of your family get wiped out?" I ask.
"No, only the ones in New York. The rest are back in China,"
"Are you mixed?"
"O-oh, you noticed. I'm actually half-Korean, half-Chinese," She replies with a warm smile as if she had found a warm cave amid a raging snowstorm.
"Are you sad?"
"Yes… Very,"
"A-are you okay?" The girl asks.
"Yes," I respond before turning towards the mansion.
It was on a small green hill, sitting pretty with its massive gold gate surrounding it.
No guards were in sight… except for one butler, with one singular monocle on top of his right eye.
His smile was large and a chilling sensation ran through my body as he stepped back towards the golden gate.
The spikes atop the golden gate were crowned with a black stone that suddenly rose.
They were ripped off from the golden gate and began to swirl around one singular man who seemed to be a monster.
