Chapter 26: Science and Magic

Rae's POV 

I should think about what I want and what I need and see if it's the same thing? What is this old man talking about? 

What I want and what I need are one and the same thing.

Wait! Are they really the same thing? What I want... 

What I truly want is to continue a simple life surrounded by the ones I hold dear such as my recently found out biological brother and sister,  Eleanor, Trina, and even with that clingy witch Cilia while studying together magic with Merle. I can't believe she is still alive but from my simulations, she did seem not to remember me. Well, no matter. It is not like the dreamscape can create a perfect simulation of the nature of the outside world. Or can it? Well, it doesn't matter now back to the what I want what I need thing.

What I want is all that but what I need is...

What do I really need in this world? 

Well, for me to have a peaceful life I will need a peaceful world, and if this keeps on going on will I truly have a peaceful life?

I mean right now this world has so many dangerous organizations that even without the Supreme one descending, It might still end up burning itself.

Thinking about it, what I need is a peaceful world. This will only be possible when I unite the world and make it ready for the upcoming hurdles. By doing this I will not have to be its saviour and the world will have a higher chance of surviving while I keep my family safe. It will be a win-win situation for everybody. But how will I get them to unite?

... I have gotten it. I think it is a pretty good idea on how I can do that and as a bonus, I will even get my revenge on all those who have wronged my loved one and me but right now my power level will not allow me to, So I need the old man's teachings.

"Old man! I think I have an answer for you."

"Oh! Then let me hear it."

"What I want is a peaceful life surrounded by my beloved ones but what I need is... 

What I need is to create a place where this peace can be achieved so in a way I do need to save this world but not as a saviour in fact I will save it in quite an opposite way for that is the only way I can truly unite them to be ready for what is coming next. So no what I want and what I need is not one and the same thing.

If my answer satisfies you Old man I would like for you to help me attain the power I need to bring my plan to fruition."

"  ... I see. So is that your final answer?"

"Yes, it is."

"It seems like you have finally started to take your destiny as a saviour seriously."

"Didn't you hear what I said old man? I told you that I am not going to be this world's saviour in fact I plan on becoming its worst Nightmare because what lies ahead will be far worse than they could possibly imagine."

"I heard you the first time but it doesn't matter how you decide to take hold of your destiny as long as you just embrace it. I think you are now ready to receive the teachings of all I know."

"Thank you very much old man, I mean Teacher. I will be in your care."

"Now do you know where you are?"

"Yes I do, I am in the dreamscape."

"Yes, but do you understand what the dreamscape is."

" Of course, it is where all dreams and memories converge."

"But further than that do you know anything else?"

"Not really."

"While the dreamscape is where Memories and dreams converge it is also a place of creation."

"A place of creation?"

"Yes, a place of infinite creation. In fact, it even has a counterpart. A place of infinite destruction if you will."

"A place of infinite destruction!"

"Yes, Don't you know of it?"

"No, I don't think I know of it teacher"

"Think very hard and wide, hasn't one of the valkyries mentioned this to you?"

Thinking back to the time I was approached by the three sisters of fate is when I first heard the word dreamscape. I asked them if they could resurrect people and they replied that once a person has passed on to the abyss or the dreamscape they can not.

"I remember the three sisters of fate mentioning an abyss so is it the abyss?"

"Correct it is the abyss."

"Wait from my memories I remember at that time we were talking about souls that have passed so how is that related to the dreamscape."

"I was just getting there. You see apart from creating and converging of memories and dreams the dreamscape also recycles no let us say reincarnated the souls of the dead that it receives." 

"Reincarnates so does it mean that the soul of my mom and possibly my dad are here?"

"That is very unlikely but if they have. managed to escape the clutches of the abyss and have still not been renewed they might be.

"So how can I find..."

"Even if they are here right now you can't resurrect them in any way so you just have to give up on them."

"Just give up on them? I can't do that. Even if there is a sliver of a chance to help them then..."

"I did not come here to raise false hopes for you, I came to give you a better fighting chance of protecting those who are still alive and well."

"...I...I understand master. So what is so special about the dreamscape anyway?"

"As I have told you before this, this a place where the souls of the dead gather, and as such, it is a well of infinite magic power."

"Infinite magic power? what do you mean!"

"...As you know mana is an energy that is produced straight from one:s soul..."

"So that being the case means a gathering of souls has a direct consequence of creating an infinite pool of powerful mana."

"Exactly. Due to the souls of the dead having such an effect on the dreamscape it makes it possible to create anything straight out of one's imagination."

" And why is that exactly possible? I thought mana was confined to the six elements?"

"You are as short-sighted as I thought.

Have you forgotten about the non-elemental part of magic?"

"But that only gives your body some physical enhancements "

"That is one of the things it can do but it has the potential to do so much more

How do you think mana is able to strengthen one's body so easily."

"Because it strengthens one's cells?'

"Well, you are partially right and partially wrong. Mana does strengthen cells but not the way you think it to be. Actually, it does in the way you think it to be"

"Huh!"

"It seems that I have confused you a little bit so let me try to explain it for you to understand. Mana is spiritual energy produced by one's soul. As such it is malleable and subject to manipulation by one's mind. This being the case mana can end up doing what we think and want it to do such as if one wants to strengthen their cells it can do so, or when one wants it to enhance their sight it can do so but this phenomenon is not just limited to one's body."

" I have heard about such feats in non-elemental magic but did not think of it as much of a big deal to it."

" And there is your problem. You look down on that aspect of mana when you use it quite often or have you forgotten about mana search or your newly acquired mana sight? The primordial form of mana is such a powerful thing but you  yourselves limit its potential."

" I sort of understand what your saying but I still need you to help me understand more."

" You see before you and I stepped into this world. There were natives who understood the primordial form of mana. They did not just understand it, it was a deeply rooted part of their culture.

They lived as four different tribes. These tribes were formed as a result of what element the tribes' mana was better tuned to such as if one was in tune with fire more than the other elements they would fall into that tribe same to water and the other elements. This practice let them manipulate their chosen element well and many of their practices were derived from these elements, Then we came along. From a world filled with science. When we saw the so-called magic of this world, we coveted its power and didn't even give ourselves the chance to appreciate the beauty behind the cultures backing it. 

We saw those people not as people but as backward-minded animals that didn't understand and appreciate the power they had in their hands. So we did what humans naturally do when they find something new intriguing and that was science it up. Now we have a world polluted with misconceptions of what this magic truly is."

" Wow that is quite the story old man, are you perhaps one of the first visitors of this world."

" I was, I mean I am."

His face and body started to morph into a familiar form. It was...

"Spider lady? No, it's Freya. Wait spider lady and Freya are one and the same?"

"Yes and stop calling me spider lady. I am Freya Raegan daughter of Erik Raegan or better known as the 'Supreme one'

You see my father was like you a scientist full of passion always looking to learn more of the unknown and just like you he carried his science from our world to this one not giving the magic of this world a chance."

"I understand what you are telling me so let me learn about the magic of this world...

But I can't promise you that I won't science it up."

"Ok, I understand just try to learn it from this world's perspective."

"I will try.".

"Now do you know the reason why you can't manipulate the elements without the help of spirits?"

"Yeah because I have a mana circuit instead of a spirit circuit."

"Well that is the reason but it doesn't have to be. In your current body, it is quite hard to use mana in its rawest form because your mana circuit is hindering you too."

" But I can clearly use mana to manipulate the four elements fine with the use of spirits."

"Will you keep being dependant on these so-called spirits?"

"If you want to be truly powerful enough to protect your loved ones you need to be less dependent on the spirits and more dependent on your own mana manipulation.

I am not saying that Spirits are bad they have their advantages but it would be better to use them as supplements to your magic."

"Is that even possible, I thought that people are born with a fixed circuit."

"I am telling you that is not the case. This thought has made many of your kind limit themselves. Like those who you state have 'potential' for a particular attribute. It looks to normal eyes like they can't use magic without the help of an object when really it is their mana refusing to flow out of their mana circuits this can be fixed by them developing a spirit circuit."

"You can develop a spirit circuit?"

"Yeah, anybody can develop a spirit circuit but I have to warn you the method I am going to show you is a little bit unorthodox and can even cause fatal injuries but if it succeeds you can use both circuits as you wish."

"Ok, I am willing to give it try even if there is a danger to the method.."

"That is good to hear, Now we first block the pores through which your normal mana flows through."

"How exactly do I do that?"

"It's easy all you have to do is channel your mana throughout your body just like how you would when you are about to chant a spell then retain that energy and let it flow back into your system."

"Okay?? Now that I have done it what next?"

" Repeat this process six more times then we can proceed."

"Ok... I have done so, I feel a little bit full from all that. Now, what next?"

"Now you create an explosive burst of mana."

"An explosive burst of mana?"

"Yes, an explosive burst of mana. This will force your body to find new pathways through which to release your mana from opening up a spirit circuit."

"But isn't that dangerous."

"Yeah very, there is a less dangerous method but that needs years to work out and we don't have that kind of time so you will have to brute-force the unveiling of your spirit circuit."

" But how sure are we it will work, won't the pathways created just be random."

"Don't worry, the foundation for the pathways is there we just need force to unveil the pathways themselves. This will be provided by the burst of mana."

"Okay, I will do as you say so...

Wait is that it?"

"Strange? Do you feel any blowback from that surge of energy??"

"Actually, I don't. I feel my mana flowing smoothly even though it is a little bit different from how it usually flows."

"That is good to hear. I think your pathways had already been halfway made we just finished the process. it is like you were already unconsciously opening them."

"What makes you say that."

"That mana surge you create wasn't as powerful and destructive as I expected it to be, I was even ready for a deadly blowback."

"I guess am just lucky. So will my mana circuit ever function again?"

"Yeah, give it a few hours at the least or a couple of days at the most and you will be back to normal."

"Okay."

"Now that your Spirit circuit is open we can start your training."

"Finely!!"

" As I previously stated mana is an energy that is produced by the soul and controlled by the mind. Now that you have a spirit circuit your raw mana is not being filtered and has its full potency. Now create fire from your mind."

"How exactly?"

"How do you usually do it?"

"I imagine the spirits creating the flames then activate the magic circle for it and just like that I have fire."

"Now you don't need to do all that, you just need to have the will to create flames and the rest will follow."

Let me try to do this on my own. As she has said all I need to do is imagine the process and have the will to create it then it will appear. Fire is created by the combustion of atmospheric gases most often which oxygen is needed to act as fuel so all I need to imagine is igniting the oxygen in the air.

Looks like that works...

"Congratulations looks like you were able to create some flames.  Now, this can be applied to all the elements although some of the others are more of manipulation rather than creation."

The image of that dark elf immediately came to mind.

"Like water, I assume."

"Yeah like water. 

Now that the basics are down we can get to the good stuff."

"Such as?"

"Domain projection, Soul manipulation, and even other enhancements for both the body and weapons."

"Domain projection?"

"Yes domain projection, I think you have already seen domain projection at work when you faced the Valkyries."

"Yeah, I remember that."

"That was due to the effect of their domain projection. You yourself have done a domain projection. Remember..."

"No, I don't think so..."

"Your so-called mana storms?" 

"Oh those, yeah I remember those."

"Yeah. They were a product of an incomplete Domain projection and will exertion.

You have quite the potent mana, don't you? Now I am going to teach you how to create them consciously."

" Ok."

"Domain projection is achieved by flooding a certain radius around oneself with mana then through your willpower you have a sort of Dominion around that area. With this dominion, you can shape the phenomena happening around you to your liking. You can even exert your will upon an opponent who sets foot into your domain freezing them in fear or even overwhelming them till they faint."

"That is interesting. How do I achieve that?"

"It is just as I have said you exert your willpower in your domain. But it's something you have to practice over a long period of time to perfect."

"Of course, that is to be expected. What about soul manipulation? What exactly is that and how do I use it."

"Soul manipulation is just what it exactly sounds like. It is the manipulation of one's soul. This is a very deadly technique that must be used with care. An example of soul manipulation is when you had a confrontation with my magic's Incarnation Freya the queen of the Valkyries. She manipulated your soul into causing harm to your body. This was only possible because of her complete mastery of domain projection, willpower exertion, and soul manipulation.

Soul manipulation can also help you steal other people's techniques. This is by integrating the memories accumulated by the muscles that are stored both in their muscles and souls and incorporating them into your own. An example of this was from my fight with Brynhild although her fighting techniques and mine were and still are similar."

"That is quite a scary technique."

"You don't know how scary it can get, to some extent you can steal some ones life force but then again you can also do the opposite for a dying person."

"So how exactly does soul manipulation work?"

"The recipe for soul manipulation is just the same as all the others. The soul just like mana is a very malleable thing in that with enough mana, willpower, and imagination you can do deadly things to and with it."

"Incredible!... You have given me quite a lot of useful information within a short period of time so the rest is up to me to work out all by myself. Thank you for all the knowledge ."

"Oh! before I forget you need one more thing to access the soul for its manipulation."

"And what is that?"

"You need to tap into its heart."

"Huh!"

"What I mean is you need to be able to access or if not able to, radiate emotions to it."

"Emotions?"

"Yeah, emotions. They are quite a major player when it comes to dealing with mana and the soul."

"Now that you mention it I have seen that. Thank you for the tip."

Thinking back through all the spider la- I mean Freya has said it boils down to the soul and the energy it emits. Speaking of the soul I remember being able to absorb mana from the existing world by altering the frequency in which my soul vibrated in, so is String theory correct?

I mean in string theory it is said that matter is vibrated into existence and gets characterized by small cosmic strings found in quarks. If that is true and I think about all in the information in that light then I think I can actually take my abilities to the next level.

"Freya before we leave can I take some time to put into practice all that you have told me."

"Yeah, but we should not stay here long because even though time is slower in the dreamscape. Our presence here can be easily detected by my father so we need to hurry up."

"Ok "

"Oh and Rae or Raphael or whatever your name is now." 

"Yeah?"

"When we leave the dreamscape, I won't be able to remember my memories as Freya or of the time we spent together so I am begging you that once we get out of here please do your best to return me to the hundredth floor. We cannot risk my presence drawing my father to the material realm. 

We are not ready to face him."

"Sure thing spider- I mean Freya."
