Chapter 21: The Phoenix Quest 2

Maggie's POV

We split up into two groups after saving Mrs Merle and the women from Stokes kingdom.  Merle and Trina were to help the knights from the stokes kingdom with their quest in finding the mandrake. After they finish with their quest they were to track us. Merle gave me a tracking object imbued with her magic so that she could find us. As we travelled the forest searching for the Phoenix, met many powerful monsters but we defeated all of them. Our coordination as a party was very efficient. Our leader being Mr Harold, every decision made was very thoroughly thought of. The way he strategize our formations taking into account our strengths and weakness made it possible for us to cover each other's weaknesses and to amplify each other's strengths. As our party continued to advance we met two cockatrices. Our battle tactics were now being put to the test. Mr Harold gave us our orders without even showing any sign of weakness or hesitation. Most of us were terrified since cockatrices are S class monsters and it usually takes a party of A and S class adventures to just defeat one. We tried to curb our fears and face the monsters, luckily we were able to fend off the monsters. Merle returned from the quest stating that Trina had to go to the demon realm. We soon reached at the foot of a mountain.  We were afraid of climbing the mountain since there was a legend that talked about a mountain at the centre of the forest. It is said that the mountain is called the dragons nest since it is home to the ice dragons also known as blue dragons. Dragons are the most powerful beings in the world. One dragon is said to have enough power to annihilate a whole country in a matter of minutes. So everyone was afraid to climb a mountain full of them. That is not even the worst part. Apart from the blue dragons, there are other dragons search as the green dragons also known as earth dragons which reside in the valley on the other side of the dragons' nest in the dragon valley. Other than the blue and green dragons there are others such as the red, silver, golden and black which are also known as fire, wind/sky, celestial and evil dragons respectively but luckily those live on the edges of the world. As everybody was cowering in fear Mr Harold told them that this cannot be the dragon's nest since the dragons' nest is always covered with snow and if it is the dragons are powerful creatures which require a lot of energy to move so they spend most of there time sleeping for centuries thus if we were to be quiet as humanly possible we won't have to fight the dragons. We began our ascend. As we ascended we realised that there were no monsters around. This was supposed to give us relief but it only seemed to heighten our paranoia. Everybody seemed to think that the presence of a powerful monster must have driven off all of the other monsters from this area. When we reached near the peak of the mountain we saw there was a cave on entering the cave we saw a single feather made of flames. We quickly picked it up assuming that it must be the feather of the phoenix. Everyone was filled with joy seeing it knowing Mr Harold's son would be alright.

As we were leaving the cave we saw at a distance a huge mountain that seemed to be of endless length. Seeing this, all of us breathed out a breath of relief now knowing that we were not at the dragons' nest. We began to descend the mountain which we had named the Phoenix's nest. As we descended, a huge shadow was cast onto us darkening the sun's light. On looking up, we were all devastated by what we saw. It was a huge cockatrice. The cockatrice seemed to be with the other cockatrice we had battled. It seemed that the huge cockatrice was their mother. Immediately the cockatrice produced a powerful roar. Most of our party members seemed to be glued to their positions. The cockatrice then open its mouth as if it was ready to breathe out something. Merle then shouted out to everybody that they had to run away since it seemed that the cockatrice was about to spew out a deadly poison that eats away at a person's body killing them in the process. Simultaneously one of the small cockatrice's eyes seemed to start to glow producing a very ominous aura. Then a beam of light aimed at Joan was released. When the light was about to hit Joan Mr Harold jumped in front of her pushing her away. Mr Harold then withstood the beam of energy or so we thought. He fell to the ground and his body began petrifying. The mother cockatrice then released the poisonous gas she was charging all of it directed at Mr Harold. Luckily everybody was out of range and was not affected except for Mr Harold. Mr Harold's petrified body parts were slowly disintegrating. I took command of the party as Mr Harold had commanded early in case he was incapacitated. I then ordered Merle to create a makeshift cave with earth magic. Running towards Mr Harold I chanted a wind spell to blow away all the poisonous gases. I then carried the now dying Mr Harold back to the makeshift cave which Merle had created.  What was I supposed to do now in this situation where death was waiting for us all outside the sealed cave and Mr Harold was dying in my arms. Tears were filling my eyes I couldn't help but cry since the love of my life was dying right in front of me. On seeing the phoenix feather I decided to use the Phoenix feather on him not caring about the consequences. As soon as I gave Mr Harold the feather, his body was engulfed with flames. His petrified body parts were returning to normal his disintegrated limbs were growing back. I felt a little bit happy that he was not going to die. M's Merle then told me there was a way for us to go back home using three transport gates but to create the spell required a lot of mana. I offered to give up all my mana so that we could save everyone. I then began the mana transfer spell that left me unconscious. On waking up I  was at the mansion's infirmary with Mr Harold sleeping at a chair on my side. Looking at his face I could not help but feel joy that he was safe and we were all back at the mansion. Mr Harold then woke up as if sensing that I had woken up. I was afraid that he would be angry with me because I used the phoenix feather meant for his son to save him but instead of an angry face, I was met with a face full of worry asking if I was alright. I told him that I felt much better. He seemed to be so relieved, this made me feel a little bit happy since he was worried about me. Suddenly a knock was heard at the door. Mark then entered saying that Trina had returned from the demon realm and wished to speak to Mr Harold.
