Chapter 42: The Tremors in Stokes

Vincent's Pov

The whispers of an uprising are high in the air. At first, it seemed to be baseless rumours propagated by idle chatter among commoners, but time and time again I questioned if maybe there was truth in it. I decided to look into it further to try and appease my doubts but sadly I found out that the rumours are true. Many of the people working under me have joined the uprising.  The sheer force and number of people who are against my reign is overwhelming. The revolt seems to have been orchestrated by my younger brother William Menial with the backing from the church and other nobles. As it stands my dethroning is inevitable but being raised by my father I have come to understand even when all seems lost you have to fight for what you believe in. I always suspected the church to be this family's undoing. That is why I limited my interaction with it. My family right now is in a very precarious situation. if  I don't handle this well, Then my daughter and wife will surely fall prey to my brother's schemes and ultimately lose their lives. Knowing how calculating the church's leader the high priest is, then they would definitely not take the direct approach with their revolt. They would most likely find a way to paint the picture of the Duke family in a bad light that opposes their religion and thus have a valid cause for the revolt. Luckily I have prevented any interaction between my daughter and the church with this They would not be able to poison or find out and use my daughter's witch abilities as a valid reason for a revolt, but if they know about my daughter's dark abilities then surely she would be a victim of there schemes and ultimately perish. I need to get My daughter and wife out of the dukedom before any action is taken against me.

"Your Grace, I am here to answer your summons"

"I was waiting for you, Elise. I have a mission for you. As it stands now, my wife and daughter are in danger thus I need you to protect them. This mission is of the highest priority. You are one of the few people who are still loyal to me so I thank you."

"But why your grace, is this about the uprising you were so fearful of."

"Yes. Word that my brother is planning my dethroning has reached my ears and I need you to safely guide them out of Stokes and maybe get them refuge in Bermone. Before you say anything I know that the kingdom of Bermone and the dukedom of Stokes have not been on friendly terms since hundred years ago when we split up, but our recent diplomatic missions with Bermone were well received by their current monarch Queen Rose Wemberly who I believe can take my family in and protect them. I am relying on the faith she will help knowing that, they can't further the trade relations and all other diplomatic relations with my brother on the throne."

"If I may be prudent to ask, Has your grace informed the queen of this arrangement?"

"She has no knowledge of this as of now but I will try to deliver it as tactfully as I can tonight."

"As you wish your Grace. We'll be departing tomorrow night in the dead of night with the queen and the princess so as not to be discovered."

"Thank you, Elise. I appreciate your service and loyalty."

"It is nothing, your Grace."

Now all that remains is to convince my wife to leave for the kingdom of Bermone with Cilia and Elise. The talk was long and with each and every attempt I tried to convince my wife to leave the castle for Bermone she shut me down. She was too stubborn to leave me in this time of peril but once I convinced her that the castle was not safe for our daughter and the only way to protect her was to take her out of the kingdom she started to give in. What truly convinced her was that her daughter needs a mother to care for her so as to grow up well Outside of the dukedom. She hesitantly agreed to the plan.

When morning came, I woke up to my worst fears. My wife was lying beside me motionless, Her body cold as ice and no breath flowed out of her nostrils. No matter how many times I called out to her she did not respond. She was dead. How did this happen? When did this happen? I have to find out who is responsible for this. 

It's time I asked my informant to investigate this. He has been able to give me information about everything so far so this will not be a hard task for him. But I don't know how to contact him again.

 The doctor came immediately after I summoned him. Using his magic he was able to find out what killed her. 

"It looks like the Lady was poisoned. The poison was a slightly slow-acting one."

So the cause of death is poison. Who could have killed my beautiful wife? Is this my brother's doing? The only way I can get my answer is if the man from the association can investigate this for me.

In the afternoon my brother together with the High priest came to give their "condolences". 

" Brother am truly sorry for your loss. Lady Vivian was truly a gem to all of us"

"I offer my condolences to you, your Grace. The Lady went too early. As it is customary will hold her funeral immediately after we cut her ties to the world by relieving her of any lingering attachments through the ceremonial purification. To help with your grief we also offer to give you closure by investigating the cause of death"

"I would like to keep the funeral private."

"That's hardly possible Vincent. She was the wife of the duke so the people should get to tell her goodbye.

" Your Grace I would like to introduce Gilbert Anine. He has the ability to track things by their scent so with this will be able to find out how the queen was killed and maybe catch the killer."

"Okay, I will allow it."

We walked to my wife and then he took a sniff of her body scent.

"I smell poison."

I already knew that. The boy then looked under the bed and picked up a bottle of wine. It now came back to me. It was the bottle of wine I had procured from the wine cellar so as to ease our talk last night. Was the wine poisoned? It's possible I didn't have any so maybe that is why am still here.

"Your Grace, how could you do such a thing?"

"What are you talking about High priest."

"You would dare take the life of a human being? life is sacred. In the name of the gods up high I must now imprison you, your Grace. 

"What?"

 I see now so this is what they were planning. This is how they want to dethrone me.
